Marketing is actually an advanced form of black magic. It’s all about bending people to your will, by believing or purchasing something they probably don’t want or need. Black magic is selfish, white magic is selfless. Alchemy is about changing states, and is probably not a misnomer (regarding the title) as marketing is quite often all about selling a ‘lemon’, although not having read it, i couldn’t possibly make an informed comment.

I love Rory’s advice as he really understands behavioral science. I work in marketing and i genuinely believe the rise in digital and the ROI tracking of that have killed has more of a detrimental impact than many see. Trying to justify brand led activities where you can’t apply the same metrics becomes very hard for get sign off for. Yet look at so many behavioural backed examples that work “ playing German background in a wine shop increases sales of German wine. Yet when customers were surveyed why they bought the wine they did, no reference to the music was made…’

Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future.., I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life!!

Goodhart’s Law, that Rory Mentioned perfectly sums up what’s wrong with so much of the education system. Here is a description of the law: ‘Goodhart’s Law is expressed simply as: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.” In other words, when we set one specific goal, people will tend to optimize for that objective regardless of the consequences. This leads to problems when we neglect other equally important aspects of a situation’. How does this apply to education? Departments of Education worldwide decided they wanted to measure how good education is with standardized tests, as a result preparation for the tests became the target of teachers. In other words, teachers started teaching to the test. As a result, other equally important parts of education have become neglected.

The sheer diversity of possibilities to start a business is staggering and that’s once again emphasised in the video. What I like the most though, and it is the direction I am going now to create my own business, is the adoption of a customer perspective.
Thank you for sharing such somewhat obvious, but hard realisations!! Excellent video!

    Hey Simon,
Really enjoying your long form content! I watched your video with Luke last week and this one today.
I’m watching while I work and have been taking great inspiration and some key takeaways that are directly applicable to my current projects.
    Keep it coming!!

    I love your vids.
I have watched a lot of your long videos where you teach everything you know.
Thank you for being an awesome mentor, and you seem like a genuine down to earth type of guy.
Our moral compasses are also pretty similar, and that's the biggest green flag for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening through this entire conversation. Some of the remarks are observations I have made myself at times and wished I could make a career from pointing out these (obvious to me) inefficiencies in businesses. Things such as the chairs up on tables too early, the mop/broom out in view, lights not on down the road, bad marketing material, bad location planning, etc.

I'v watched the video a few days ago, LOVED IT! So much to learn from roy but also from Simon, what you're doing for the people Simon is amazing, keep going!
At some point Roy is recommending a book he says is very simple but amazing, I can't remember nor can find it again without having to watch whole video over again, so if anyone can help me that would be great! Thanks : )

The service station comment “It actually looked dangerous to stop there” was I think really funny. True I’m sure, but funny. Rory Sutherland has a built in humour that’s unique.
added edit; thanks you guys, you have helped to restore my confidence to try again.

listen, its all about mental sociology. if as a business you understand your customer you cannot loose. if you know how to get inside you customers head you cannot loose. understand the mind of the consumer. that's it simple.

Being good at one thing: Before Greggs started selling coffee a building site crew for example could be in and out in 5-10 min even if there were a few people in front in the queue. Once they started selling coffee that delay increased a lot. This is a big deal if you only have 30 min to have lunch and be back on site.

This was an excellent and insightful conversation that exposes entrepreneurs to the true value of understanding human psychology. Number crunching automotons can't start businesses or grow them, this is a reality that automation evangelists aren't conveying.
It's possible that more businesses need Dream Big days that equally involve marketing as they do the CEO and creatives. One objective, one focus around complementary roles to achieve a collective Big outcome.

Superb Interview. There is a lot of good information. Pro-Audio Tip of the Day: If the guest will be speaking towards his right side of the body then place the wireless microphone on the right since the head will be facing that way. This will help make the sound more consistent on the volumes so they don't fade in and out. Hope that helps. Much Respect :)

This was a very insightful video. I am a musician and have found marketing music such a challenge. I can not tour as I have a young family but, by treating my music as a business and now I am realising the website I am building is going to be more than just presence online but, in a way my little shop. Being inviting, open and clear about my offerings and even pricing for music needs to be clear snd right. I am going to invest time in researching digital marketing

@stephaniejane-music Look up a scandinavian pianist called Soren Bebe. Review his website and sign up for emails, check out his socials, and you'll get a really good idea of how a relatively small musical operation can do marketing and promotion really well. I'm not connected with him in any way (apart from being a follower), but I admire how he goes about his business. Good luck!

Suggest you review the website of Soren Bebe, a scandinavian pianist who does marketing really well, in my opinion. Sign up for emails, and you'll see how he builds his 'brand' and markets his products. I'm not connected to him in any other way than being a follower - I just admire the way he goes about his business as an independent musician.

Hi Simon at 49:09 The Book Rory recommends is from 1916 called "Obvious Adams" by Robert Updegraf about 4.5 pounds or $7 USD. I love that he looks at what is really happening, he observes like a detective instead of assuming the research done is correct.

Simon could you make the videos on IRL business traps what happens in that Thriller journey. I’m from India so the Geographical Zone does change the rules of this game. So how can anyone manage it. In business many things could be different but the unfiltered information and hidden knowledge is just priceless. Same like in Online business everyone is making it but nobody know how to make it. 🤯

Advertising gets you more trade. That extra trade pays for your advertising. You can end up actually losing money. I figured this out after 10 years i business. I stopped advertising and did less business but made more profit.

Rory is correct about the new coffee machine pricing example. I was looking at getting a new webcam. The brand new model released a few weeks ago, was less than the previous model that was released 12 months ago, and sure enough, I emailed them to check which had the superior features! I then also saw several people asking the same thing online. 😅It did indeed mess with our heads. 😮
