I think it's partially to do with the bass notes being hit at regular intervals, it kind of forces the listener to fill in the "beat" even when those bass notes aren't being hit every beat. And really I'm taking this idea from how pianists describe "bass note movements" or chord movements in general, so i may be wrong, just my thoughts.
