This guy is why I still surf. I'm going on 61 and have been surfing since 1974 at age 12 I found what made me feel whole, feel alive feel right! I'm older then slater but he has taught me so freaking much about this amazing sport. My entire life has been living at the beach, I know nothing else I only understand how the ocean works and how I can utilize it's energy. Everything has its flow and I truly believe that. I never went pro but I can surf with some of the best and not get blown out. I'm that confident in my abilities and at 60 instead of slowing down I've turned up the intensity. I can't live in fear of trying something id regret if I didn't try it. I've had several injuries and here I am in Ventura about to paddle out. I've been doing this over 47 years and invested so much of myself into my craft. I surf to stay alive.

Kelly, I surfed NSSA men's when you were still in the boys division in Coco beach.. Watched your heats and knew you had something going back then,I now live in Oahu and still surf as much as I did when I was competing .Watch you evolve into a true " Aquaman"..inspiring...
Oh ya and one more thing. Kelly thank you for your total devotion to our sport and all you've given to other surfers. I've followed your career from day one and still continue to learn from you. Your the greatest of all time and I say that with total confidence. No one greater and all along you kept giving back to the sport and younger surfers. That speaks volumes in my book. 🤙

I can read the ocean and waves well due to bodyboarding my whole youth but as an adult surfer I find it hard to get my body and board to follow the path my mind wants to go. Kelly truly is the master of positioning and being one with the wave. The GOAT

I just really hope we get a dozen out of Slater! I still remember when he won the 7th while I lived in Cocoa Beach, everyone was so stoked for him! If he wins 12 I'm going to back to Cocoa to party for a week lol
It's an attainable dream bro! I was never a great surfer, but I was good enough to win a contest or 2 and get Hurley to flow me. Then I broke my neck on a shallow 10ft beach break in unpredictable surf. Keep yourself intact and uninjured and you can totally do it...as long as you can rip!
Never liked him in his young days because of the almost sickening levels of ambition. Just remember that final with Shane Beschen. And true surfers don’t care about contests anyway, do they? It took me years of growing up including the lecture of his autobiography to better understand him. Also, he seemed to become more subtle as he got older. Today, I can’t believe he is still surfing on top level and displays so much love of surfing that I struggle to keep up. I think he is one of the greatest surfers of all times.
