as the theater manager at RADA and usually when I was stressed..this beautiful being would casually drop in, sit herself down and make me laugh with her recent shopping escapades, Cynthia you are and were a tonic..and clearly a talent which is now being catapulted to the stratosphere ..and rightly so!! thank you for making me laugh when i needed it!! x x
I LOVE THIS POST!! I love her!!! This made me very happy that you shared it!!! If you need a laugh....www.tixlady.com I sell theatre tix in NYC Broadway. I sing, too....but NOT like Cynthia!! xoxoxo
Written for the incredible Judy Kuhn, when they brought CHESS to Broadway, this is one of the finest, purest melodies in musical theatre. As the poster below me says, it's deceptively simple. The big leaps up and down the scale make it challenging to keep the smooth legato line the song demands.
Judy Kuhn's Florence is the only Florence to ding this before many of the rewrites Chess was subjected to gave it to Svetlana. Doesn't make sense since the song is Florence coming to grips with her feelings/situation with The American/Freddy.
Ok. I’ve been singing this song since I was 19-20yrs old (just turned 42...) and HOLY HELL. THIS WOMAN’S PERFORMANCE IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING I’VE HEARD. Oh My WOW. Seriously. 🤭🤭
I wonder if she realized she sang the wrong line? Took me two run-throughs to pick it up but Cynthia was so smooth and flowed so well. I think everyone was captivated by her voice it went undetected.
She knew, otherwise she wouldn't have gotten back on track (with the lyrics) so quickly. But seriously when you sound that amazing wtf cares! I know I don't ❤️
THE WAY THE CONDUCTOR LOOKED AT HER WHEN SHE BELTED AHHHH oh my god I love her singing this song!! The emotion was so moving, I could listen to this song over and over again:)))))))
I'm not crazy about the slight cry in her voice ... but by hell, does she ever put the emotion into it that this song truly demands!! She made me believe that this was HER story!
She was brilliant in THE COLOR PURPLE 2016!! Brava!! She is amazingly talented. But my absolute favorite...was when she held up the TONY and said..."Mummy!!" Love her.
after watching this video for at least 20 times ( coz i love Cynthia's version of this song) I JUST REALIZED SHE DID A MISTAKE! ,IF YOU KNOW THE SONG BY HEAR YOU WILL KNOW IN 1:15 SHE SUNG IT AS " IN SOMEONE ELSE'S STORY IN SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE AS TAKING PART AT ALL( she sung it like the bridge part ) IT SHOULD BE " SOMEONE ELSE'S STORY ,I DONT SEE MY SELF AS TAKING PART AT ALL" she knew she did a mistake BUT with confidence and superb talent NO-ONE NOTICE IT. BRAVO CYNTHIA ERIVO!
I noticed when I first watched this video (just today) and I searched the comments section for someone who noticed, too, and found yours. Haha! I ignored the mistake anyway, and just continued listening to her beautiful rendition.
Long ago In someone else's lifetime Someone with my name Who looked a lot like me Came to know A man and made a promise He only had to say And that's where she would be Lately Although the feelings run just as deep The promise she made has grown impossible to keep And yet I wish it wasn't so Will he miss me if I go? In a way It's someone else's story I don't see myself As taking part at all Yesterday A girl that I was fond of Finally could see The writing on the wall Sadly She realized she'd left him behind And sadder than that she knew he wouldn't even mind And though there's nothing left to say Would he listen if I stay? It's all very well to say you fool it's now or never I could be choosing No choices whatsoever. I could be In someone else's story In someone else's life And he could be in mine I don't see A reason to be lonely I could take my chances Further down the line And if That girl I knew should ask my advice Oh I wouldn't hesitate she needn't ask me twice Go now! I'd tell her that for free Trouble is, the girl is me The story is, the girl is me.
What an extraordinary song and sung by an extraordinary and highly talented vocalist. I don't need to hear other versions and I don't give a flying toss if she made an error in the lyrics. She'll do for me. I could listen to her over and many times over again.
Just excellent, what a wonderful song , musically and lyrically superb. Sung to perfection by Cynthia, best version of this incredible song from Chess.
The emotion was there first part of the song then she got a little bit detached from the song on the bridge part. Lea Salonga , on the other hand, was able to consistently maintain the emotions all throughout the song. In fact, she even put more emotions on the bridge part until the end. ❤❤
She also hits a sharp note right before the lyric flub. I saw her at "Live at Lincoln Center" at the Appel Room a few weeks ago. She took herself super seriously. Had on this bizarre hairpiece that looked like the halo you often see in paintings of Mary and the Baby Jesus in Italian art from from the 17th century. And she didn't even recognize the presence of three other singers on the stage with her - or the band. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I think she was a little off kilter that night after really beating herself up about her voice cracking (who cares?) at a performance at the Apollo the evening before. She barely moved on stage and seemed totally disconnected for the music she was singing. It was kind of surreal. I saw her first performance in the U.S. at the Jason Robert Brown residency at SubCulture downtown (before she started in THE COLOR PURPLE in the U.S.). Really intimate setting with about 65 people in attendance. She BLEW ME AWAY.
God I love her voice, can't hear the mistake though. Do you have the song Rob Brydon sings, "It's easy for you"? and the last song (I think it was last) ? I don't know her name or song title it was sung by a blond lady.
@@JF-sh2sm That’s not really establishing motivation though. It’s detailing the urgency of the situation and how overwhelmed she feels, but not her inner emotional reality in the way that Nobody’s Side does
I watched Helena version…it was nice..but Cynthia touched the soul….Helena version touched my head and ear…Cynthia touched my heart and soul. She made me feel the song….that was my experience.
Absolutely beautiful voice, but I regret to say that the performance lacks in terms of emotions and character for my taste. In a direct comparison with Helen Sjöholm's multiple interpretations of the same song, Cynthia Erivo sounds rather sterile and uninspired, though her voice as such probably is even better from a "technical" viewpoint. I really wish I would be more positive and maybe I've even biased, but it's at least my honest opinion. Needless to say, an extremely pleasant video to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for sharing!
Such an amazing voice, so brilliant. I really wish she'd work on knowing her lines though! Screws up the lyrics in this, in the I Can Do Better performance at Marie's Crisis... you are better than this Cynthia! Learn your lines! I can sympathize with flubbing up at Marie's Crisis, laid-back venue, seemed like kind of an impromptu thing... but messing up here on a Christmas day lifetime achievement show on the BBC? Not very professional! Although, to take some heat off her, why is there no teleprompter?!?!?!
I love Cynthia Erivo every time I see her, but to be honest this whole thing was a big EH for me. Orchestra was too slow, Cythia had pitchy moments which never happen with her, and lyrical flubs on top of it. Still great. Not perfect.

No-one is perfect… but I swear Cynthia Erivo is damn near close. She’s incredible.

Wig has been through the roof and on mars for almost 5 years now and it still hasn’t come back
This song will always show who can sing and who can not. It is decpetively simple, yet demands ALL of the singer to make it believable.
No joke. I am working on this song now, and dangit, if it isn’t so difficult. I crack all over the place. :(

Ive done this song! I loovvee it!! The only thing with me was since im a soprano it’s quite low for me but i still have done it anyway :)

This is a song that's not super well known, but all the greats have sung it. Awesome! Beautiful song!

I know since I know the song.
I caught it but didn't care.
It’s like Beethoven said. “To play a wrong note is insignificant. To play without passion is unforgivable. “
This is incredible! Best version of this song I have ever heard honestly. This is how it's supposed to be sung.
I'd really love to hear Cynthia sing this now.
More years experience, more life, more a way in life.
This would be a different story.
This has to be my flat out favourite performance of this song. Cynthia Erivo is amazing. The emotion in this performance is just beautiful.
Cynthia is maybe the best actress i know. ah, she is SO TALENTED

Her ‘Go now!’ is probably the most heartfelt and heartbreaking I’ve heard. ❤️

One of my favorite songs from the newer Broadway version of Chess. This makes me so incredibly happy. :)
It makes me cry every time I listen to it
Congratulations Cynthia

Absolutely fabulous, what a beautiful voice and amazing talent. I loved that!
She Has A Gift, Love Her!!!!!
She is truly one of my TOP influences for singing
Dude- She covered her little lyrics mistake like a boss! No one probably noticed. I had to rewind to double check it
Cynthia Erico is really fantastic singer. Saw her on broadway color purple. Moved me to tears!
Oh how I love this lady. Her voice smh.... very well done
I just love her voice. She seems like a beautiful soul very humble.
This still hits me
She sound like a singer from Disney 😍
She should be a Disney princess someday.
@Itsjust Xy Is she really? That is so awesome!
She brings tears un thé second part !
omg the lyrics that was so smooth the like wow okay respect that was great
her voice is so beautiful good god ! bravo bravo ! chills is what i get when i listen to her voice.
Fantastic interpretation of this beautiful theme. You have an extraordinary and beautiful voice. Congratulations. From Seville, Spain.

I really like Cynthia’s performance lyric flub and all. But Judy Kuhn is still the definitive performer of this song.
The best rendition of this song ever!
Woah

You have to see leah salongas version
She messes up the lyric, but otherwise she's brilliant. I love it!
Who else is here after seeing the Harriet Tubman movie? 🍿

Great song wonderfully sung...too bad about the lyric mistake
This is a great version (other than her getting the lyric wrong) but this song belongs to Helen Sjöholm.
Beautiful ,sounds very much like Karin version
I prefer this song a little bit faster, but this vocalization is about as good as it gets.
OMG there is an empty seat in the front row!!! What a waste!
God I love her voice, can't hear the mistake though. Do you have the song Rob Brydon sings, "It's easy for you"? and the last song (I think it was last) ? I don't know her name or song title it was sung by a blond lady.
+Zandolie3 1:11 - the lyric here is "I don't see myself". "In someone else's life" is the third verse.
I'm not a drag queen but if I was this would be in my set lol
this song was the much needed lift that Chess needed for the role of Svetlana. Some versions give this song to Florence though.
American Broadway version was given to Florence originally, but after a while it was given to Svetlana.
The song should be Florence’s. Without it, Florence doesn’t have any major song fleshing out her motivations.

I'd like you to listen to Helena Sjoholm singing this, only accompanied by piano. Her version is more fragile and to me extremely trustworthy.

Lol.. stop taking drugs.
Amazing! But I still love Leas version though.
She makes me feel so untalented 😂

Absolutely, Stephen! Especially the Swedish version, Inte Jag.

She doesn't need notes from the likes of you.

almost as good as the lea salonga version...not a knock, check it out
