They had some of the best musicians. They were perfectionists. Deacon Blues and Cousin Dupree come to mind and AJA was a masterpiece.. They never could put them in a music category.

Very true. They were the 'wrecking crew' of the 70s. Fortunately in the 1970s 'fusion' was a fresh music category and that meant the radio industry could understand where the Steely Dan were coming from. So they got the air time they deserved.

This song is historic. This is the 1st song ever to use a drum machine playing samples of real drums. In 1980, this is about 5 years ahead of state of the art.
The band gave the recording engineer $75,000 to build a device to play drum samples. They had previously tried several drummers but nobody could play as robotic as they wanted.

I just thank my lucky stars for the music we grew up with.
These reactors are hearing some of it but,

What are you going to do with your life?" Serious stuff. This song was playing in the background that afternoon. Sadly, that restaurant really went downhill in the years to follow. But I've always had this memory.

Steely Dan was (technically) just two guys. They would seek out and hire the best studio musicians they could find for each song -- using one drummer on one track, another for the next for example. They would listen to different musicians play for each song and choose which one they thought was best. It's why the instrumentation quality is so amazing.

I turned 19 when this was popular, so it really spoke to me. The guy saying, "nice..skate a little lower..." was the kind of stuff I heard all the time. It really was part of being 19 and having older men checking me out at clubs. So that's kind of a creepy/funny part of the song. That was how it was back then.
For the record, I knew who Aretha Franklin was, long before that. Sheesh.
Thank goodness the music and execution were so awesome. It made me not hate the song, because I would have felt awful hating any Steely Dan song.

@@francispower1418 definitely!! Also "Dirty Work", or "Reeling in the Years", from their first album Can't Buy a Thrill, which is just as beautiful as the two I mentioned before. Steely Dan are just an endless source. I started listening to their music only recently and they're already among my all time favourites.

@@gaetanocascio2420 I first heard 'Can't Buy a Thrill' about forty five years ago and I remember the night very well because I played 'Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me' nineteen times in succession. My poor neighbors! Just writing that has brought smile to my face because it reminds me that at the time I had very little idea about what or where Brooklyn was (I was actually in Stroud, Gloustershire, England that night) and all these years later, at this very moment as I type, I am looking out over Brooklyn Bridge (don't ask me to count the lightbulbs).

@@gaetanocascio2420 AirPods? In those days we all had the most awful headphones but really, really good separate component hi fi with the most amazing speakers. I'm sorry to have to tell you this but AirPods and MP3s sound lousy by comparison! Anyway both Donald Fagan and myself are grouchy old men these days. In fact I was in Sam Ash on 47th St buying guitar strings a few years ago and waiting in a quite long queue for the check out when this somewhat disheveled old man at the back of the line shouted to the cashier (or anybody else who might be listening) "Do you have a metronome"? "Yes sir" came the reply. "Is it loud"? Again "Yes Sir". "What kind of batteries does it take". We all knew it was Donald Fagan so nobody minded! But so typical for a man of that age. Deaf as a post and needing to find products that take something that can readily be recognized as an actual battery! Bless him. I read an interview some years ago in which he claimed he mostly uses Garage Band for writing. Not Logic but Garage Band. Apparently he's a serious cook too. I can easily see that. Only use the best ingredients, put them together in a harmonious manner and don't let anything get in the way of anything else. Not difficult to do if you know how. Donny does!

India, you clearly picked up on how well executed the music was with the Steely Dan. 'Gaucho' was their last studio album until they recorded their two works of this millennium (both deservedly Grammy winners). For some Steely Dan purists (including this one) there is a slight difficulty with 'Gaucho' on account of the amount of cocaine that was being consumed by those associated with the recording at the time (and which inevitably found its way rather too profoundly into the music, which is perfect but perhaps a little soulless and numb compared with most of their earlier and later work).
Also if you like the vibe of 'Gaucho' (which all sounds a bit like 'Hey Nineteen') you will probably really enjoy Donald Fegan's solo album 'Night Fly' which he released a few years later. I would further commend you to his last solo album from 2006 'Morph The Cat' and in particular to the song 'What I do', his homage to Ray Charles (track 3). Despite having been made in 2006 this record was all recorded on 2" tape and through an analog mixing desk. They knew what they were doing. The sound is rich and creamy. I especially like the line from the lyric that goes "you bring a lot of church but you leave no doubt as to what kind of love you're shouting about". Check it out!
