  • Music starts at 1:03 I missed the first part of the speech where the musician stated that (contrary to popular belief), bagpipes are not just a Scottish instrument. They have become known around the globe as something inherently Scottish, but their history and development seem to be very far spread.
I did a little research myself and found quite a few theories. The origins are believed to date back to around 1000 BC (image on a Hittite carving) and other theories include Egyptian origins and invading Roman Legions taking them to Scotland (I can imagine many of my fellow Scots saying: “Aye right pal, oan yer bike!” to that one ;) ) and others believe they came via colonising Scots tribes from Ireland.
Here is the English translation from the video:
"These are medieval style bagpipes. In church paintings they are often shown with cones/funnels and of varying sizes for different tunings and such. So there is a lot of [bagpipe] history preserved in church paintings.
These medieval bagpipes were later developed into circa 152 different types of bagpipes. Sweden has its own type of bagpipes, Spain have a few, Bulgaria, Italy, you name it [yes, that was in English]. From India to Portugal, from north Africa up to Sweden and Finland.
There are many different varieties, but we’re using the medieval type, today at least! We could play Teutates [also spelled: Toutatis]… [Inaudible] just wondering… [inaudible] Here we go. We are going to play “Drunken Piper”! One should ideally have had a little whisky first…"
