The losses in this battle were numerous, constituting one of the costliest battles in terms of human lives inflicted during the French campaign. The majority of the engaged German troops belonging to the Grossdeutschland regiment were lost during the battle, these losses being 570 men in total, including 103 killed. Likewise, the 67th French RI suffered numerous losses with 362 soldiers killed and many wounded. A company of the 51st RI even finished the battle with only five sergeants and 30 soldiers. According to the back cover of the book The Battle of Stonne: Ardennes, May 1940 by Dominique Lormier, the battle is described as follows: “This battle, little known to the general public, which took place from May 14 to 25, 1940, is notable for the intelligent use, on the French side, of tanks associated with infantry and artillery. It is in a way the model of what should have been achieved on the entire front, namely the speed of violent counterattacks, using all the firepower of modern weaponry at key points. Furthermore, it undermines the received idea of the material superiority of the German army. The B1 bis tank is indeed superior in several points to the Panzer: thicker armor, unparalleled weaponry. But the big drawback of the B1 bis tank was its enormous consumption of gasoline, which forced it to continually go back to refuel. Tanks running out of gas were lost to the Germans. German General Guderian in contact with the Grossdeutschland regiment during that day indicated that "the atmosphere was a little nervous." The 10th Panzer Division's operations log noted that the French counterattack was extremely dangerous, threatening the flank of the German 19th Army Corps. General Hermann Hoth wrote after the war that by delaying intervention and not committing all the armored forces available to French General Jean Flavigny, “the French missed a favorable opportunity; this counterattack, carried out in a resolute manner, could have changed defeat into victory.” This battle, and the losses on both sides, demonstrate the combativeness of the belligerents.
The French are probably the most challenging faction to play in PS for me. It's so hard to counter the Germans with their MG-34's when you've got that stamped metal nightmare that is the Chauchat. All of the thump of a 20mm cannon with none of the punch.
It's an open secret that American tank designers and engineers were heavily inspired by French 1940 tank designs. The Char Bis 1 looks identical to the American interim medium tank, the M3. The French Somua looks like a M4 Sherman tank. The French government just before WW2 approached the U.S. Government with blueprints of French tanks, inquiring as to whether the United States could produce French tanks. The Americans peered at the French tank designs and must have realized these are state-of-the-art designs. We should copy these and upgrade it for American use. Indeed, the M3 and M4 American tanks were superior to their French antecedents.
