    The audio has been majorly screwed up (by TH-cam) on the Sensible Soccer videos for a long time. This should fix that! And instead of uploading all four parts individually, I've put them all together. Anyway, this is a review covering all the Sensible Soccer games, and then some - the original Sensible Soccer on Amiga, the games that led up to Sensible Soccer, Sensible World of Soccer, Sensible Soccer '98, Sensible Soccer 2006, and finally the updated/modern versions of SWOS. It's pretty hefty! Enjoy!

    You might get a sense of deja vu here, but the first long version that I uploaded was hit by a copyright claim, literally due to stock music from one of the adverts that I stuck in as a stop-gap between two of the parts. And so, here it is again with the offending music removed!

      +Kim Justice Worst case scenario is when your video gets flagged for something that isn't even to do with your video, it was just some "filler" you added. Almost the same as when you're in a youtube debate with someone and you try to make all your points and then the guy only responds to something that you didn't even mean to say, that didn't even have anything to do with any of the points you were making lol!

      Cory Goodman I was commenting on how he was saying his content got flagged for a copyright claim and I commented on that. Maybe re-read things before you comment, to make sure you're managing to keep up.

    When you played England 1966 vs Germany 1966 in Sensible Soccer the game became black and white. Nice touch. I liked Sensible for those fun touches but loved Kick Off more for the realism / simulation it had. So much of my childhood was wasted playing Microprose, Subbuteo, Kick Off, Player Manager, Kick Off 2, and Sensible....oh and Wizball (I'd forgotten about that until this video - It came with my Amiga). Great days. Thanks for the video.

    I think you're right with Doom, my brother was at university in '93. He bought a PC - Gateway, because back then, there were grants. As soon as I saw Doom, I was blown away, I was about 11 at the time. Could not believe the graphics, and at the same time arcade games like Ridge Racer, Virtua Fighter, even Starfox on the SNES were propagating. I had a Amiga 500 with the 512KB upgrade to 1MB. Sensible World of Soccer was amazing, couldn't get on with Kick Off, yet Premier Manager was my favourite management sim, all of the upgrades / ticket prices / sponsorship. Champ` Manager came along, but i don't have the same memories as taking Macclesfield up the table, then probably becoming a manager of another club.

    In 1992, the headline "Sensible Soccer will last you as long as the Amiga does" was a rather unfortunate choice... :)
    Though, in a kind of ironic double bluff, it was completely off the mark. Sensi still going strong!!

    It seems that SWOS inspires the same kind of love for soccer that Tecmo Super Bowl created for american football. Fans updating rosters and creating customization and improvement options constantly. Sure is nice to see, even if I don't care for soccer one bit.

    Been watching this over the past few days on my commute to work and was a real blast from the past. I literally grew up with this game and I still think it’s the best ever football game ever. A few years back I did have a blast on the pc emulation with updated teams and it was amazing. Thanks for an amazing video and gave me some memories especially with the coverdisks. My kids now playing PS5 will never appreciate the awesomeness of the C64 and Amiga back in the day. What a childhood 😊

    Sensible Soccer was the best soccer game of the computer 16 bits Age. It was great to see included Tehkan's World Cup, in 1985 it was the state of the art of Soccer games (Sport games for all that matter...). First game on the arcades that I spent money on, oh the memories... Best video ever on this topic! Congratulations :)

    Thank you for this excellent reprise as always. Brilliant work. This game deserves its place in history. It really is the most fun on the Amiga and it was so addictive. The easiest single player goal method for me was running at one the posts then kicking the ball with a small swerve. This method enabled me to win many games. Well until my brother learned the same trick on two player. SWOS certainly fixed that to a certain extent with better goalkeepers. But it was still a good way to score. I'd love to play it again.

    Damn, your dedication to, and love of, games is highly admirable.
    I loved Sensible Soccer back in the day (not as much as you, clearly :P). I only had the Mega Drive version, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, especially with a friend. I remember massively pissing off my opponent once, actually, when I made it my aim to have as many of my players sent off as possible, just to see how many I could get my team down to. I was playing as Anderlecht; I still remember that for some reason.
    Also, Sensible Soccer represents the first time I really became aware (and fond) of specifically British culture (I'm Australian). I didn't get many of the references in the 'joke' team and player names they had, and researching them really put me in touch with British slang and pop culture, and made me fall in love with it (I'm a huge Anglophile, it's one of the main reasons I've loved watching your videos so much).

    Sensible Soccer was one of those games I always heard about as a kid but unfortunately didn't really get to play. I recall perhaps having a go with it around my Uncles house but thats it. We didn't get a computer at home till 2002 haha. There was a pretty great clone though done on the Net Yaroze which was included on that certain Playstation Magazine demo that I played quite abit of.

    Kimble's first quote in this vid says it all, yes, the Amiga has been officially dead for fifteen plus years, but I also still am a massive fan! Although I use a laptop for most things (internet) and a PS3 for games, but I still have an ancient classic A1200 with some mod-cons, DVD and USB for memory sticks et al.. I use the Amiga to do cartoon animations, which I have uploaded to my own TH-cam channel

    Sensible Soccer's style and gameplay are a genre by itself. It was perfect, only needed small progressive improvements to survive. But not changing how it works. They should have never gone 3D neither change the style at all. The style was the main thing making it adorable. The attempt to change was their demise. They should have looked for the kind of subtle improvement as it was done in the XBox Live version (too late). Modern enhancement without changing the style, was the right way. Keeping the style, all career/league features and updated players. Improve elsewhere. Being visually simple as it was, by now it could be playable even in the browser, could have become the standard to play soccer online, and make loads of cash in merchandising.

    • @AntonioBrandao
      @AntonioBrandao 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Loved your video by the way, thanks for it. I just was surprised how you managed to have any positive light to shed on the 2006 version. Are you sure it deserves it so much? For me the 1998 was just a shot in the foot, but the 2006 version, man that one was straight ridiculous with those big 3D heads. Sensi is about little pixel players... and the gameplay and control action was too different. Wish we could get a new version like the XBox version, but updated and if possible with good P2P, and for normal computers, PC & Mac. Using Emulators leaves us in the underworld.

    Did you play (or even know of) a 1986 Imagine game called _Super Soccer_ (not to be confused with the SNES game of the same name)? Although its deadly slowness and tricky-to-get-used-to controls hampered its enjoyment, this game predated _Kick Off_ in that it had fouls, yellow/red cards (and the resultant sendings-off in the case of red cards, although in _Super Soccer_ the sent-off player simply disappeared instantly) and the ball did not stick to your feet in that game either. There was also something akin to after-touch in the game - another thing that would later become standard in acclaimed footie games.

    Back in 1994-5 ( i was 14-15) i can remember myself as something of a God in Sensible Soccer !!
    i had reached a point where i could win easily most of the opponents !!
    Having that in mind , i faced a serious ... shock when i recently rebought this game from gog. I couldn't even control the ball !!! made me realise how much i have changed !!
    Loved this game sooo much as a young kid , i still consider it perhaps the most timeless football game in history (*alongside Championship manager series ... perhaps )
    --P.S. Clarification : I never used Amiga , i played the DOS version on PC ( *yes , i was on the ... enemy's side , lol* !! ) , that's why i'm somewhat disappointed for not mentioning the PC-DOS version in this video .
    Still , great video for a great game.

    For me, best two player game on the Amiga was.... SPEEDBALL 2.......but that's probably because I'm not into football, which is a shame. I'm sure Sensi would have been an amazing game if me and my bro were into footie, and I was fully aware of its pedigree as I was an avid Amiga Power reader (and occasionally other mags!). Alas, 'cos I've never been a fan of the beautiful game I guess I've missed out on something wonderful😔 (and some potentially great two player awesomeness)

    Having played all the classic footie games at the time, my favourite was Goal. It was flawed by it's auto shooting, but we just used to play gentlemanly and not do it where possible. Other than that it was better in every respect than SS - more configurable, better views, passing was better, better aftertouch. I think it's a great combo of kick off 2 and SS, but you did have to tweak the options in terms of game speed and zoom level to suit.

    It's the ball control: Nothing since has quite revolutionised Football gaming like ball control in Sensi did and I'm not sure anything can. Games like Pro Evo picked this up and did some interesting stuff, but the cold truth is that there's just no way to compare a game that operated with eight directional inputs and two buttons to one that's operated with ten buttons and multiple, analogue directional controls.
    By evolving the technology and giving players so much close control, we've actually lost what made Sensi above all else so fun: It's accessibility. Part of what made it fun was that anyone could pick it up and play, and whilst you could get good you were very much still at the mercy of your limited controls. This kept the barrier of entry appropriately low, and prevented the game from becoming stale - and of course, probably resulted in more than a few joysticks broken in frustration.

    This might sound like a heresy to some people, but I think I've found my Sensi-game, and it is the MegaDrive version! (I've been playing the PAL International version.) The Amiga version might be better in every way, but I'm just totally and helplessly shit at it. I don't think I've ever managed to score a goal against the computer, and I've tried, hard. I played the MD version and it was surprised to realize that it was actually too easy on beginner, so I had to up the difficulty. After that I played the world cup, and that was the most fun I've had with a sport game like, ever (maybe topped by two-player Ice Hockey & Super Spike V'Ball on the Nes, couldn't say.) Been playing a bunch of matches after that too. I just tried SWOS on Amiga again, and I think (?) that I've improved a little. Still couldn't score a goal in Finland - San Marino match, but I didn't get oblitarated either, so maybe the MD one could be kind of a gateway drug to harder Sensi for me. Plus I can play the MD one on the go with my PSP, so that's awesome. I think it's a very enjoyable port for me.

    I don't believe for a second that the zoomed out camera was a conscious design choice for the reasons you mentioned. It's just the same height as Mega lo Mania. One of those fateful strokes of luck that it worked so well.

    • @andy6576
      @andy6576 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you believe is both irrelevant and wrong. When Sensi were developing the game they stated that they wanted to choose a view/height that didn't need the radar 'Kick Off' did. They wanted players to be able to see enough of the action on-screen without needless distractions.
      Go to AMR (Amiga Magazine Rack), hunt for dev diaries and read. Knowledge is so much more fun than incorrect personal statements passed off as fact.

    • @higgins007
      @higgins007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Williamson What you believe is equally as irrelevant and wrong. Now what? Also, which personal statement did I pass off as fact? I stated my opinion and did not even SUGGEST that it was divinely inspired.
      I'm well aware of the history and the contradictory interviews. Yes, contradictory. They are also on record as saying that the concept first arose when they simply skinned the Mega lo Mania sprites in football kits and stuck them on a football field.
      Not much deep thought and design about not wanting the radar, eh? Is it just a coincidence that after all that deep thought and consideration, they just happened to come up with EXACTLY the same camera height and perspective as was already ever so conveniently implemented in Mega lo Mania?
      Don't make me laugh. Sounds more like a post-hoc rational to give the whole thing more meaning... You are, of course, free to simply believe as gospel what the devs have said in your cherry-picked interviews. Me, I prefer to be a little more discerning. I STILL believe it was just one of those strokes of luck. The Mega-lo-mania height and perspective just happened to work beautify for a football game.
      So, logic and reason BASED on the available facts is so much more fun (and enlightening) than snarky insults.
      Tata.

      Wow, any more posts like that and you'll need chapter headings. Still, definitely better the the usual "you suck" crap that most TH-cam arguers come up with.
      The fact that Mega-lo-Mania's height and perspective was perfect for what they wanted to achieve with Sensi doesn't - and this is the important bit - make it any less of a conscious design choice. I'm fully aware of how the concept first arose (Kim even mentioned it in this video) but again, how does this in any way change the "conscious design choice" bit I just mentioned?
      As to "believing as gospel what the devs have said"...I don't even know where to start with this comment. What you seem to be saying is that I should disbelive what _the game's creators themselves_ have said and instead believe what you suspect to be the truth. Because of course, only you can know the devs' true intentions.
      Frankly, 'arrogant' doesn't even begin to cover it. Tsk, eh?
      PS. Snarky insults can be such fun and you bloody well know it.

      Chapter 1 - The Straw Man
      I don't recall insisting that you believe the same things I do.
      Chapter 2 - On The Dev's Gospel
      I presented my sound logic and reasoning as to why I believe what I do, and as to why you might want to take the developers words with a grain of salt. You can't possibly imagine any temptation for them the bend the truth a little in order to make themselves sound better, even subconsciously?
      Chapter 3 - Just an Opinion, but an Informed One
      Well personally, and with quite some familiarity with the game, the developers and the game development process itself, it is simply more likely that they realised the touted benefits after the fact.
      Chapter 4 - Common Ground
      You are right: the fact that the sprites, height, camera angle, perspective etc etc. of mega-lo-mania just happened to match their design for a football game does not prove that the sprites, height, camera angle, perspective etc etc. for Sensi were not a conscious design choice.... just a coincidence is all. It's *possible.*
      Chapter 5 - Snark
      You suck.

    • @andy6576
      @andy6576 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still feel you're doing the devs an injustice. Sensi Soccer's perfect balance of scale isn't just about the player sprites or camera height, it's about the scale of the environment. 'Kick Off's' sprites weren't much smaller than Sensi's but its pitch was a lot bigger, so the radar was necessary.
      As to the forced-perspective viewpoint taken from Mega-lo-Mania, that's a purely cosmetic choice anyway. A standard overhead view wouldn't have affected Sensi's gameplay in any way, it just wouldn't have looked as cute.
      By the way, congrats on a genuinely amusing post (especially the chapter headings). Have a well-deserved 9 out of 10, sir. I was initially thinking of giving you a 10, but I don't want you resting on your laurels. I understand they can give you a rash.

    I hadn't actually realised just how badly Sensible Soccer had done on the Atari ST.
    Sensible Software's Jon Hare didn't sound like the biggest ST fan out there, saying you could never fulfill a games potential due to the smaller screen size than the Amiga, sound always having to be downgraded..
    Controls had been tweaked a bit for ST Sensible Soccer as it was done after the Amiga version.
    But at the time, Autumn '92, Sensible Soccer had sold 41,000 copies, 36,000 on the Amiga, 5,000 on the ST.

    as someone who grew up with International Superstar Soccer Deluxe on the SNES, i could never get used to Sensi's gameplay (doesn't help that the series pretty much flew under the radar this side of the pond).
    i mean, the one-button play i actually find novel, but it's the whole ball control system that always gets me. if i try to cut inside to get into the box, i lose the ball. if i try to jink to one side to lose my marker coming from the other, i lose the ball. if i come at the keeper to try and dribble him, i lose the ball for an easy save. this is pretty tough for me to get used, although i do like the game (i have SWOS on my Xbox 360 and play every once in a while).
