I grew up @ Ascot raced Moto wed night, went to Speedway Thurs Night,Raced Bmx Fri Night,Went to Sprint Cars Saturday night climbing in the double decker buses catching tear offs standing in the turn getting pelted by dirt with all the other kids
Hey...I used to climb in that bus too, and I also went Thursday nights for the speedway bikes, Saturday nights for the sprint cars, and then race my go-kart on Sunday. If there is not one already, a Turn One Fans at Ascot page should set up somewhere.
Lived next to Toby on mariposa. Moved in 1979. I was 12 and it has effected me. To me Gardena had a charm. It's almost mythical. The Gardena department store, juliano's, the dentist where I had my first filling. Firestone tire store where my dad bought my schwinn stingray. Pup n taco and Ted's were my favorite places to eat. My sister's and I would sit in the front yard and listen to the races and watch the Goodyear blimp and fireworks coming from ascot. So many memories etch deep in me that I remember those days better than recent times.
I had a relative who worked for Suzuki who take me along with his sons to the motorcycle races. There was a rider Romero, that we used to root for. Fun days. Also, Toby knew my wife’s dad from Gardena Auto Body on Rosecrans and she remembers Toby bringing her a stuffed animal for her birthday. Cool Gardena memories.
So glad my father took our family here in the 70s. Didn't matter weather Motorcycles or OutLaws were racing. It was always fun and exciting. Tragic story of why the land owner sold it.
In about 1976 I moved diagonal from Ascot I went to sleep at night to the buzzing of cars but I rarely missed destruction Derby ,I loved the figure 8 track and held my breath at the crossing I moved out of state at the beginning of 1979 but missed the sounds took me a while to get use to the quiet.
Wow this was awsome I came to OC around 78 went to Ascot Im guessing a Total of 5 times in early 80s such a blur I trhink the 91 just ended right there it was a great fun . I saw sprints and I think figure 8s. i think I saw speed way there too Went with a guy I knew that had a car he raced some kind of mini sprint ? I think it was only a 250cc honda running alchohol almost like a go cart. gues i was around 20 now im way past grown up ha ha . Times have changed yea there was radio commercial s to get you thinking about going . but until stumbling on this I almost forgot about it

I wish that track was still open.

Just saw on Facebook today that Bubby Jones passed away. Spent many a night at Ascot watching Ol' Bub and the rest of the guys
Miss that place
Thanks for watching!
I loved 4th of July’s. They had a man parachute down and land on the track. One time he missed his mark and landed in the nearby Roosevelt’s cemetery.
And at the old car wash on rosecrans off van ness
