I love how he tried to tell them of his sin and they took it as he was trying to preach that we are all sinners. Kind of like earlier in the book he went up to the pulpit and declared that he was a sinner and a hypocrite and they though he was trying to humble himself. Really shows just how much they thought he was a saint.
really goes to show how hard it is to change people's minds once they believe something about you even if you tell straightforward that you are something else.
