Are you referring to my pronunciation? You will find an equal number of mycologists pronouncining fun'j'i as you will fun'g'i, or even fun'g'ee or fun'j'ee. It depends on who you studied under. My mentors all pronounce it fun'j'i. Who did you study under?

Like you, I've certainly balked at things that seem silly on the surface; and I'm guessing that like me, you have had the opportunity to discover that some things aren't as silly as they first appear. Study of the fruit fly has enabled us to learn a lot about genetics, and we are still reaping the benefits from that research. In much the same way, these studies can help us understand how to utilize the beneficial properties of fungi. We are entering the age of genetic manipulation, and fungi have a lot to offer. If you are interested, there are some great videos on TH-cam about how fungi can/could be used: from replacing plastics, and consuming oil spills - to growing buildings, or creating living mines that funnel minerals and elements to the surface.
Look up any discovery in biology that has made an impact on humans and the environment and you will see it all started with a curiosity. It turns out anything that produces toxins like fungi is fertile ground for medicine. Also, there is now a tonne of research being done on how we can save our coasts from rising sea levels using endophytes. Finally, we have been able to convert rice to a salt-tolerant organism just by introducing a fungal endophtyte to the plant. This has tremendous implications on world hunger. As Melaron Valkorith (above) said - fruit flies have been instrumental in allowing us to understand genetics. Now we get to apply it to gene therapy. Also, a drug that is used in treating cancer used to only be collected from a particular tree. We have found the same chemical in endophytes that come from baldcypress trees. This means we no longer have to kill trees to get the drug. We can cultivate the endophyte in a lab.
We need to invest in more scientists like her. Before, as she points out, it's too late.
