- The Fourth Annual Lecture was delivered by former South Africa president Thabo Mbeki on July 29, 2006.
Quoting from poetry, the Bible and great works on economics, Mbeki urged people against the worship of personal wealth. We must "defeat the tendency in our society towards the deification of personal wealth as the distinguishing feature of the new citizen of the new South Africa," he said.
"Personal pursuit of material gain, as the beginning and end of our life purpose, is already beginning to corrode our social and national cohesion," he added.
I am truly inspired by this great son of Africa! He will go down in history as one of the most principled leaders in South Africa, Africa and the world. Thank you dear Mr former President for outstandingly serving South Africa, the African continent and the world!
Since the sermon on the mount 2000 years ago, there have been countless great speeches by many a great leaders but this speech curves out for itself a prime position among the greatest speeches in history. Prejudice might rob it of a place in the pages of books such as 'Top 100 speeches that changed the world' but its place in the hearts of current and future generations of pan-africanists is guaranteed. Isithalwande Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki will not only be remembered as a great leader and philosopher, but his rule will always remind those who study history and aspire to lead that a mastery of philosophy is an essential requirement of any great leader. We are proud of you president Mbeki. You make Africa proud.
