Thank you. What happens if the cross-section itself is a curved U-shape, like a tape measure? Why is that strong facing up, but buckles facing down? Thanks!

Actually the beam undergoes ELASTIC deformation. The elastic limit has not to be exceeded (avoid plastic deformation)
