Nous sommes au Congo belge en 1958 lorsque la pièce débute. C’est une période d’effervescence qui va mener le pays à l’indépendance.
A partir de faits politiques précis et à peine modifiés, Césaire transfigure la réalité pour faire de Lumumba une figure charismatique à la lucidité exaltée, symbole de toute l’histoire d’un continent.
Figure de Prométhée, porteur de feu ou Christ souffrant, l’unité Dieu / homme est ici transformée en Afrique / Lumumba.
