It could also be that he has a positive outlook, landing a shot is landing a shot, even if it's team damage, it's still damage, so his total damage would still be high even if his total positive damage was low.

For me it's less of "you lose 50% of your paycheck regardless of the amount you make" and more "we're going to spend it on something you might not even want"
