Hi Stephen. Thanks for this. I agree that Waltke is outstanding. In addition, I read Paul Overland's Apollos Commentary on Proverbs last year and pushes Waltke into second place for me! Get it! Cheers, Steve Watson
Great review as always. Waltke is outstanding and Longman is excellent. I also found David Hubbard's commentary in the Communicators/Preachers series extremely helpful for preaching (although it falls outside the age bracket).
Thank you again, Stephen. Your talks are entertaining, interesting and really helpful. Just as I was thinking, are there any commentaries that you don't like, you said there are some!! Haha. Yes commentaries on wisdom literature are fewer than the Gospels, Paul or Hebrews on my shelf as an amateur theologian and Church member. Thank you.
Yeah, thanks Steven! I struggle with some of the reformed guys but nearly everyone has something worth reading. Like the Brazos ones I mentioned, I struggle with them and have decided not to buy any more BUT the guy writing the Proverbs one had something to say. I guess I look at the sheer work that they all put into their commentaries and am grateful that I get to read them and have an opinion! Blessings!
When it comes to Proverbs the Anchor Yale series also checks in with an excellent 2 volume offering from Michael V. Fox. The 2022 Apollos volume by Paul Overland has received an excellent review from the UK's own Thomas Creedy (an IVP editor and prolific reader and reviewer of commentaries). Unfortunately that series remains elusive and expensive in Canada and I haven't been able to sample them myself.
Thanks for the tip. I just got the first volume in almost new condition for £18, but I can't even get a used copy of volume 2 and new price here is over £60
I picked up Hartleys, also i got the story of God for like $8 and its in great condition. And i have a digital version of the Christian formation series for proverbs its a 2023 edition.
Really helpful, thank you. I struggle with the wisdom books... Can see the wisdom on half the pages, and am very confused by the other half. I suppose that warrants some study!
I agree. It seems to me that some of the book of Proverbs is helpful, some of it is common sense and some of it is just rather confusing! So it's a good idea to know what commentary is worth buying as some of these books can be expensive and difficult to navigate - therefore this channel is much appreciated.
Waltke (you pronounced it correctly 🙂) has an abridged commentary which thins out his two volume NICOT set. I think about 600 pages(?) I've got that in my wishlist for sure. Waltke is brilliant and an expert on the original languages and Hebrew poetry. That said, he can be a bit academic.
Thanks brother. Love your channel.
Thank you Pastor! I like Bruce Waltke 's works, Proverbs and a standalone commentary on Micah are awesome 👍🏽
Thank you for your comment! God bless you!

Thank you for these helpful comments. I haven't seen a copy of Hubbard but I am pleased to see it's low price....so.....
God bless you

@@pred5044 absolutely agree. Super helpful when I have a budget on money and bookshelf space!!

Thanks for the info Jim! Appreciate your comments! Bless you
I’m surprised you didn’t mention John Kitchen’s Proverbs commentary in the Mentor commentary series
Thanks for mentioning it, I haven't come across that one! I will keep an eye out for it. Bless you!
Surprisingly Goldingay is not here
