  • What is Conversion Linker? When you have at least one Google Ads tag in a Google Tag Manager container, you are asked to create a Conversion Linker tag.
    But what does it do?
In this video, I will explain:
    * What is the Conversion Linker tag in Google Tag Manager?
    * When should you use Conversion Linker?
    * Various settings of the Conversion Linker?

    Hello @AnalyticsMania,
Does it make sense to use the Conversion Linker for tracking conversions in Google Ads if Google Analytics 4 is already set up on the site and linked to the Google Ads account?
As far as I know, before GA4, the Conversion Linker was necessary to use data-driven attribution in Google Ads. How are things now?

Yes I have the same question -> Since it’s now recommended to import GA4 conversions into Google Ads, and GTM setup to fire GA4 conversions… is it even necessary anymore to run conversion linker?

Hi Julius, thank you for covering this topic!
What if we are using the javascript redirect instead of html “”links? Does this mean that google won’t be able to decorate the links and cross-domain tracking would not work?

Question: I have a Google ads campaign which sends people to the website. The website sends people to a third party website with a booking form. When booked it shows up in GA4 as lead_generate. However the attribution is referral and not recorded in Google ads.
Do you know how to properly attribute the lead to GAds?

What about measuring Google Ads tag in the client container and the server container? Do you need to have the Conversion Linker in both containers? We started with client side Google Ads tag but created new Google Ads tags for the server side container. So we are measuring both client and server side.

Hi Julius, would it work to implement the Conversion Linker as a workaround for the phaseout of 3rd party cookies which are being set by Google Ads? This way, information of first party cookies can be sent to Google Ads and the phaseout of third party cookies would not affect Google Ads performance?

Conversion linker was introduced many years ago as a workaround for limitation of the 3rd party cookie phase out. Since then, you should be using Conversion Linker. But it's not a solve-it-all solution. 3rd party cookies are an important part of cross-site tracking and remarketing. Conversion Linker will not help with remarketing and cross-site tracking.

I've done some tests and saw that my basic Google Tag for Ads (e.g. AW-1234567890) sets 1st party cookies:
    1) _gcl_au (always exists)
    2) _gcl_aw (exists only if the GCLID parameter is contained in the URL)
Those cookies should come from the Conversion Linker tag only, not the Google Tag itself. Or that is what I thought before my experiments.
GTM always prompts users to implement Conversion Linker tag if they are using Google Tag for Ads, but what is the purpose of the Linker itself if the basic Google Tag gets the job done (a.k.a. sets _gcl cookies)?
It seems like the Linker tag is useful only if its additional settings are being used: "linking on all page URLs" and "overriding cookie settings".
What do you think about that? Am I missing something here?
