How to Convert a Generator to Propane

  • Today I show how I went about using a conversion kit from www.propanecarbs.com to convert my generator to propane.
Running a generator on Gasoline is fine, but refilling a hot generator with gas is messy and dangerous, plus you have to deal with storing gas. I find that having an emergency generator that runs on propane is much easier and safer.
I sought the company out after doing research and bought my conversion kit. I don't have any ties to the propane conversion kit company, although later they did give me a broken regulator to play with.

Have a 78 Ford F-150 4x4 that was set up dual fuel, propane or gasoline. Had the motor rebuild many years ago & told the mechanic to get rid of the propane set up, regretted it ever since. Propane runs cleaner & will store indefinitely. This is an excellent idea as it gives you dual fuel flexibility. Honestly in an emergency I doubt you will be able to get either gasoline or propane but the beauty is propane does not go bad in storage like gasoline does! Store up your propane & your good to go & if you do have access to gasoline all the better! Excellent video, Thanks!

The bottle that the propane is stored in will go bad before the propane does .... For the 20 lb tanks is about 10 yrs .. I had a co-worker that had purchased ten 20 lb propane tanks from the last hurricane that hit us back in 2004. He had them in storage and around 2016 half the tanks started to leak ... In 2017 the rest started to leak. So storing them was all good for that just in case emergency that never happened. In 2018 we got hit by another hurricane ... He had NO propane stored because he had to turn in the ten he had... And he never got new ones. He was pissed ..

When you put the gasket on,. you put it on backwards (upside down). PLEASE anyone watching this, I hope you read the comments. The gasket has 5 holes which are to line up with the piece added which feeds propane into the generator. The setup as shown about 5 minutes in will leak. There are open holes to the outside. This can leak propane and cause major risks.

Help me understand something. I understand the function of the propane regulator as far as it "smooths" the output of the pressure changes from the propane tank. What I don't understand about generator regulators "Is there ANY flow to the carb/engine from the regulator at "Stop"? Does the regulator only flow when engine "intake pressure" pulls on intake stroke? The video never shows him turning the propane valve on so unless the above is true wouldn't it just openly "flow" filling the carb throat, engine compartment, and post air filter with propane? Ive asked this same question on a couple "conversion" videos.

The fittings on the fuel hose do not fit the regular pipe fittings. Fittings for fuel use have a 50 degree slope on the flare, regular fittings have a 37 degree slope on the flare. Had people tell me the fitting was metric until a parts man at Central Hydraulics noticed the difference and ordered the correct fitting. The one hose I ordered was not correct at the connection to the propane tank. This connection had threads on the outside of the fitting instead of the inside backwards fitting propane tanks use.

Why is it that ONLY these 3rd party companies use 2 regulators .. My dual fuel generator only has the one regulator on the hose that attaches to the propane tank.. At the generator, the other end of the hose goes direct to the carburetor..
