    Bunny blows my mind. She refutes everything I was taught in University about animals communicating: that they don’t initiate conversation; they don’t ask questions; and they don’t reference things that aren’t present in the moment. She’s brilliant.

    • @mightykaytor
      @mightykaytor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      Its hard to initiate conversation without the tools for it, but anecdotally, They've been known to make do with what they have. I bet more than one person with a family dog has had them initiate an exchange with purposeful eye contact, and oh boy, you know terrier people have stories to tell 😆

    • @Em-jc7ct
      @Em-jc7ct 3 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Well animals do initiate communication, they cant have a verbal conversation but they will come up to you to ask for things, express their feelings, and show concern over one's wellbeing.

    • @elisabethbjuhr3775
      @elisabethbjuhr3775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      That's wierd. When I step outside both my cat and my horse hear the door and they call out to me. Since they are rarely out of food, I would say that they are initiating conversation. Their body language is also obvious.
      I wonder what kind of studies the information in your Uni was based on? My farm is a very limited sample, but hardly uniqe.

    • @seanorth
      @seanorth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Of course they do all of that. Humans still have so much more to learn and find out about animals. Dogs are one of the most adaptile species on Earth. They were smart enough to adapt plenty, to try and fit into our way of life and they continue to evolve to live in symbiosis with us. For doing so, we rate them more like friends and company. Not food, nor competition over other food sources. People tend to forget, they were once wolfs. When you take that into the equation, you get a whole other respect for this incredible species and its capabilities.

That strongly implies that she isn't just associating the button sounds to objects or actions, but that she can tell that the words themselves have meanings and she can apply different meanings to the same words in order to help her communicate.

    I think your dog is wonderful and you obviously love him a LOT! :) I lost my (Max) large chocolate labradoo recently (very much the same looking of you Bunny although different breed. He was also very intelligent and knew different words, numbers and had signals. But I was always aware that he was a "dog human", although they enjoy the training, it was equally important to not over expose them too much, and let them have "more" doggy human time or at least in equal measure. Yes, Bunny sure is beautiful :)

    This study makes me wish there was a dog school. A school to teach dogs how to communicate in an effective way so that they can actually hold conversations. I think the buttons over time may become cumbersome so hopefully they can figure out a good way for dogs to type or something.

    What's most shocking to me is I swear she nods in affirmation if you repeat it back to her sometimes. Especially if she thinks you understand. It might be confirmation bias because I believe she can talk already, but it's just so well timed. If that's true I would say it's really advanced communication for a dog to acknowledge being 'heard'. However, I have seen a similar thing where if a dog is barking because he hears a sound, I will go to the door and make it obvious I'm listening, then say, "it's okay, it's just the neighbors" in a calm, pleasant voice. It works a lot better than yelling at them from what I've seen. This makes me think dogs need a lot more validation than we have thought in the past.
