Poor Barnabas, I honestly feel bad for him. All he wanted was love & to be loved, just as any other would. He was a sweet guy, Vampire or not. He had a heart, vampire or not. He cared for others. He wanted nothing more than someone to do the same to him.
Ran like the devil to get home to see that handsome vampire and Josette romance each other, for better or for worse. I can't imagine other actors having that chemistry, the talent, and the smarts to keep us enthralled this long.
So sweet to hear this beautiful song. When this started in 1966, everybody use to rush home in Bessemer, Ala. from Carver in Jonesboro to watch. This picture frightened me greatly as an 11y/o and I was having nightmares nightly. I was young but you couldn't tell me I was not in love with Janice Glover; a younglady with a father who treated a poor boy nice. We relocated to Chicago in Dec. '66 and I never saw her again. I heard she died b4 her 40th birthday. Dark Shadow takes me back there.
there were other guys in the horror genre movies who inspired our sympathies and compassions-Frankenstein,the mummy,etc-but no one,and I mean,NO ONE could tug at the heart like Barnabus.His woeful,heartbroken expressions,his sorrowful voice-his total aloneness and regrets,overwhelmed my feelings with sadness even as a kid.still gets to me,every time! He'll always be immortal in my heart,my favorite lovable guy from any 'scary' movie,ever-RIP fine gentle man!

Romantic and hauntingly sweet. I never tire of Barnabas and Josette and their world of 1795. I've never heard this song before but It is a good fit for these precious scenes. You have obviously taken great care to put this together for us fans. Thanks so much.
+Matilda Woodhouse Barnabas was naturally a benevolent individual, as was clearly seen before and after his vampire curse. As a result, he was indeed a vampire to be pitied. Even during the time he was a vampire, he was capable of showing leniency and restraint toward people like Julia and Willie, and on a couple of occasions, actually rescued them from tough situations. He was definitely at odds with his emotions during his time as a vampire simply because he was not naturally a cruel man.

I can understand him trying to poison Angelique as she was destroying his family.I can't remember him being lenient or rescuing Willie and Julia from anything during 1967 though. He was always getting strangly with Julia, and he only restrained himself as he thought she could help him (which she did). I have little doubt if she'd been of no use to him he'd have got rid of her. It was Vicki that he kept showing restraint to- although his courteousness to her always felt false. It wasn't until towards the end of his time as a vampire that he started to have genuine feelings for her that were not about planning to turn her into his next Josette. His human state in 1968-9 is when he truly becomes mostly good - especially during the Jennings episodes when Roger is way in London. Then he really does take care of everyone and settle into his role as family protector.
Matilda Woodhouse I am of the belief that Julia was his one true love. Josette was an arranged trophy, Angelique was a dominatrix, Maggie was a mere figment of Josette, Vicky saw him as a father figure, and Roxanne (Drew) was sort of a repeat of Angelique, though in vampire rather than witch form. (And, unlike Angelique, she saw herself as a slave to Barnabas). According to the later version of "What Happened to the Dark Shadows Characters", Barnabas finally recognizes how he loves Julia, and the two go off to live in Singapore after getting married.
atlantic1119 Josette wasn't an arranged marriage- they fell in love, and there are incarnations of Josette he meets in other timelines- she is the one he loves more than anyone. Vicki he did love when human in 1968-9. He never had romantic feelings for Julia, he states this many times. Their relationship is like family. Angelique was just a controlling psycho.
Matilda Woodhouse I suppose you could say that, but I seem to remember Andre DuPres (Josette's father) mentioning to Joshua Collins about the "financial alliance" between their two families, which so closely resembled the royal dynastic marriages in which the bride and groom "learned to love each other". Also, Barnabas did have a fling with Angelique while courting Josette. and so the strength of his commitment, at least to me, was always in some question. Barnabas actually pursued Vicky while still a vampire, and in fact, had come to accept their friendship status after he became human. With regard to Julia, there was the time that she was under the control of Tom Jennings (the vampire), and Willie Loomis prevailed upon Barnabas to admit that his feelings for Julia were more than that of just friends, to which Barnabas guardedly admitted. Finally, in the "unofficial" "Whatever Happened to the Dark Shadows Characters" released years later (this is on You Tube), Barnabas and Julia are cited as having gotten married, and moved to Singapore.
Barnabus Collins started out as a real creep but he evolved and gained sympathy as we learned he was violated , sinned against if you will and struggling with his fate and depression and he later became a hero instead of a villain. Johnathan Frid gave the definitive performance ever for a Vampire ever .
