      Funner fact: My wife and I, a couple of Brits living in Florida at the time, met the flight test crew for the prototype 717 in a bar in Roswell, New Mexico while it was undergoing flight testing. The invited us on board the following day and I was given an Allied Signal Aircraft Landing Systems cap by one of the crew.

  • @joermnyc

    That approach from the east into San Diego from the other side of the aircraft shows just how skilled the pilots need to be... the wing tip can be FEET away from things like houses, trees... plus from the ground having a plane suddenly ROAR overhead can shake the ground. San Diego was a fun trip. :) I also did a coast hop from SFO to Orange County airport, but SFO was hammered in with fog, had to cram 2 flights into one to get there. Going back, we got caught out because the wind direction changed, and all departures were grounded, so we had to sit and wait in the middle of the taxiway system for our gate to clear... thankfully my connection was a few hours long.

  • @6yjjk
    @6yjjk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Love it - "United sucked, again, not even gonna bother." My one experience of SFO came about because United screwed up - I should never have been there. Ended up sort-of-sleeping airside, then getting thrown out by the police at 4am because of a security breach. Sniffer dogs, bomb squad, the works. What happened, apparently, was that a bunch of new security goons were too stupid even for TSA and didn't make the cut, and some genius decided that they shouldn't hand in their badge and uniform right away but could work their last shift. These muppets got it into their little brains to come in an hour early, open up the checkpoint, and let everyone through unscreened... just for the hell of it. So that was nice.
    I miss the 717s that Blue1 used to have. Wonderful aircraft (and airline - RIP).

    Yoga in San Francisco, OF COURSE !!! I'm not surprised at that. Great shots from the air on take-off from SFO !! Yeah, I sort of pricked up my ears when you said 60 miles from L A to San D. Sort of strange to take TWO flights from SFO to SAN...there are many non-stop flights between those two cities daily but maybe not on Delta. Not sure why you chose to break it into two flights and just change planes in L A. AND YES! Having lived in San D for 3 years, I ALWAYS loved that landing approach..seeing all the city downtown to the left, seeing the Coronado Bridge, and a somewhat short landing runway just beyond Interstate route 5. It has got to be one of the most dramatic landings in a major city anywhere in the world. And then there's the mild weather and the many miles of beaches, San Diego wins in so many ways as a place to fly into ! Good video.

    The Boeing 717 / Mc Donnell Douglas MD-80 / Douglas DC-9 is an interesting aircraft. Entering service in 1965, with the last one being produced in 2006. Very few aircraft have survived two mergers and production for over 40 years. One of my favorite airlines, Midwest Airlines, operated the Boeing 717, in an all first class configuration. Four across leather seats, food service on China and fresh baked-on-board chocolate chip cookies were distinctive features of their service.

      Delta's 717s used to be AirTran's, Southwest inherited them when they acquired AirTran and then leased them out to Delta for use. They are very modernized mad dogs and the Rolls Royce engines are incredibly efficient and quiet for the type of aircraft they are on.

I was at LAX recently and with time on my hand, walked from the Tom Bradley International Terminal to T2 and back, walking under the runways in tunnels. Great review! I've really come to like Delta in the past few years, and especially flying on MD-88s and 717s. The unique 2-3 coach config is great - I love being on the "narrow" side of the plane if I'm not up front! If you are a Skyteam/Delta elite things get even better, as you usually have great chances of getting bumped to C+, which all have power plugs, free booze, and comfy headrests to boot over normal economy.

    I don't care much for Terminal 3, but it is the last of the original jet age design layout that can still be seen at LAX. It will probably be updated sometime in the future, but it shows the iconic roundish gate layout that all of the original terminals once exhibited. I flew out of the terminal many times over the last 40 years or so mainly with TWA and Alaska. Back in the day you had to go down under the tarmac and back up to get to the gates. It needs renovating but still a bit sad to see it go.

    I suppose everyone’s experience is different. I took this plane from LA to Seattle. First class seat was uncomfortable, not cushiony at all. Food was atrocious and our flight was delayed multiple times and had two gate changes announced only once over a mike no one could hear. It was utter chaos. I took another Delta flight from Guadalajara to LAX. Again poor communications with passengers. For some reason our wider bodied jet was the only airplane at airport that boarded from tarmac in brutal heat for reasons not explained. We were transported from terminal to tarmac in an an unairconditioned bus and left there unable to get out in blazing heat. There was one delta rep on bus. An 80 year old woman collapsed from the heat. I caught her before she hit the ground. I shouted out at delta rep for help. It was other passengers who helped. The delta rep just stood there clueless. I gave Delta another shot. I leaned my arm on the arm rest and the arm rest came off in aisle. I noticed the arm rest had been simply taped to my seat. Aircraft was filthy and tired. So three shots I gave Delta and I’m outta there. Unlike you I’ve not had a bad experience on these two airlines: United and Alaska. That’s having flown 2 million air miles in my adult life. I do have to say I took business on British Airways recently, having avoided them for 15 years, they have greatly improved, the food was superb. Their new safety video is one of the funniest around.

    You mentioned two parts of mr recent trip that I loved too. Took the bus shuttles to and from The Eagles Nest at LAX, and running between the taxiway and the runway is an awesome experience, just a shame the vision vinyls ruin the views somewhat.
    Also did the arrival into SAN for the first time and those downtown views are breathtaking

    Delta is my favourite legacy carrier , American 2nd and , ugh ,United .
    Trip report idea : Ottawa to Iqaluit on First Air or Canadian North . I know you like some of the older planes (me too) , flying Canadian North could get you on a B-737-200 ! Quite pricey though . And you'd probably want to go in June !
    Cheers .

    Just found your channel and I'm enjoying the videos. What a trip! I fly quite a bit for work and I'm always looking out the window for airfields going by.
    On this particular flight, I was hoping you were going to point out an airfield with a rather unique situation. The founders of Google were tired of dealing with traffic and delays at San Jose Airport, so they picked up the tab for the land lease at NASA Ames Research Center in exchange for use of the runways!
    Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the rest of your vids.
    Update: Just saw Moffet Field in your Q400 report. Nice!

    Yay San Diego, my home. I hope you got to spend a few days here. I am curious as to why you took a connecting flight through LA to get to San Diego. The next time you are in LA and headed to San Diego, I recommend business class on Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner. Sit on the west side of the train. From south OC down, it features fantastic views.

    Have fun in San Diego! If you had sat on the right side you'd have had a birds eye view of Balboa Park on approach. Its a great place watching spot and the air and space museum there is quite nice. If you have the time, visit Balboa Park and the zoo. Old Town and the Gas Lamp have some great restaurants, too.

    Nice Thanksgiving Day surprise to find a new trip report from you, Paul. Good report as usual.
    I know a lot of folks give suggestions to you, so here's one. BA has had direct flights from London Heathrow to Austin Bergstrom for a couple of years. Next year, according to a press release from Lufthansa, they will begin flights from Frankfurt or Munich to Austin Bergstrom. Perhaps you could be on the inaugural flight. If not, happy safe flying all over the planet, Paul. I just subscribed so now I won't have to hunt for your reports.

    I'll be one to say I prefer flying Delta even if the price is $100 higher than others. The service for me, especially when connecting through Atlanta, has been phenomenal. Hit Gold Medallion in 2014, but I'll be honest in saying I wish I could be flying as much as I used to.
    Delta has me as a lifelong customer, but I'll be flying British Airways whenever I head towards Europe unless Delta is just a tad bit cheaper.

    I had experience with the old TWA , mainly out of NYC to Paris and back a few times and also NYC to Boston and back , great airline and I loved the old TWA terminal at JFK ... inspirational architecture ... it is claimed the Sydney Opera House is in fact copied from the architect of the JFK terminal Eero Saarinen

    I've never really understood priority boarding. yes you get in first, yet then have to put up with those who come on later, pushing pass, may get a knock on the back of the head. Children! Plus the 'lessers' look down upon you. Board last?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree, I find the whole priority boarding thing a bit weird!

    • @chrisbaker8014
      @chrisbaker8014 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a laptop bag so I don't need the overhead bins. I also always have a window seat. Priority boarding lets me get on and sit down straight away without having to move the aisle passenger, or wait for too many people who are messing around in the overhead bins.
      I don't understand aisle passengers who get priority boarding though. I suppose it's just for overhead space.

    these bubbly air craft the 717were all acuired from airtran airways when they merged with southwest. The 717 is a reconfigured DC-9 beefed up on steroids.Delta purchased all of the 717 from southwest.Love this aircraft, flew on them lots of times and like you said very quiet mainly of those bmw rolls royce motors..
