Mt. Baldy is considered one of the most dangerous peaks to climb in U.S. Julian Sands started his hike on Friday (1/13/23) when it was known that a huge storm was heading for So. Calif. Not a good time to start a hike. He was an experienced hiker and knew the risks. Sounds like he was a thrill seeker. And I do mean "was" as he is not going to be found alive. A tragic but avoidable loss.

I hike alone all the time lol so do thousands of other people we do just fine bringing the appropriate gear and knowing our own individual skill and experience levels.
The mountain ranges have been collapsing ridiculously in the past few months. A lot of the mountains were covered in snow then melted then refroze making ice sheets. There’s been heavy rains and the grounds either given out in places causing mudslides or atleast unsteady footpaths if you have the wrong equipment. There been a snowy owl sighted in California blown off course, and there’s been interviews of numerous hikers that have gotten injured from falls/landslides with news crews catching people falling infront and around them and offering medical aid during broadcasts on searches for missing persons. It’s completely bad weather and the experienced hikers are taking a break or using gear that’s made for ice/mud, regular hikers and opportunists are going out and getting injured because they’re not considering how the weather affects the mountain
Who wants to hear another person nattering on when out hiking? I don't. I prefer peace and quiet. I've always hiked, and camped, alone. Hiking alone is still much much safer than driving a car.
@@lyndoncmp5751 I also enjoy hiking alone but should probably get a personal locator beacon. They have saved many a stranded life. Anyone can break a leg, especially on ice. And you're walking nowhere with that.
As a general rule, It's not wise to hike alone in forests, let alone in a storm. If you're alone and you fall or injure yourself, or loose conscious by hitting your head against a rock, there's nobody near you to call for help. You may die alone without rescue. Walking alone is a big mistake most hikers do.
The most dangerous mountain during an extreme snow storm but yeah, he probably got abducted by bigfoot or aliens or he fell into a portal right? Stop listening to and believing the insane theories of a right wing extremist and use some common sense.
It'll be a miracle if he's alive out there. It's been a week in freezing Temps. Searching from the air in terrain like that, needle in a haystack. He's thin wo much fat to insulate his core. He's probably injured or walked into snow too deep and is exhausted. A person in a location like that who knows wilderness survival will be in a snow cave they dug, a regular cave they found, or inside a shelter made from brush and snow. To be seen from the air...man that's just all around worst case scenario. Please, if you can afford it, never hike, even a short hike wo a personal locator beacon. It can and will save your life. They're monitored by NOAA so no matter where you are on the sea or on the land if you trigger its emergency function a search team will come for you and know exactly where you are. Maybe this story will inspire more people to take personal locator beacons with them. Make sure it's not in your pack, you could lose your pack in a bad fall down a mountain or plunge into water. Be sure the beacon is actually attached to YOU in a place where if either arm was broken you could access it w the other. A broken ankle from a slip off the side of a trail putting you out of obvious sight is all it takes to change a short hike into life or death. Be careful and get a beacon before hiking or ocean excursions if you can!
He was awesome in Warlock! A childhood fav. Hopefully he just needed to get away for a bit and doesnt wanna be found yet. Ive done it a time or two. Hoping for a safe return.
His cellphone battery died - that's a very strong indication that something went wrong. It's also been nearly a week now since Mr. Sands has been missing, in a very cold and rugged area.
At this point, finding him alive seems grim, but if they find the body it will be preserved if the wildlife didn't get to it, sorry if that came across insensitive, I hope they find him.
My heart is broken for this man’s family and friends - ALSO for those throughout the world who are moved with grief by Julien’s mysterious disappearance. I send my love to you and my prayers to the Almighty. Watching and listening from 🇨🇦Canada🇨🇦
We've had a ton of rain/snowstorms in the area, his body is probably under several feet of snow by now so I wouldn't worry about any critters. I suspect he will turn up around late Spring/Early Summer. There was another hiker who died there in December of 2019, his body was not discovered around the following June when all the snow had thawed.
I’ve been to San Bernardino County I have a friend there and the highest I’ve gone up to driving is big bear. Let me tell you when you are on the road ascending up the mountain, to which I got up to 4500 feet you will literally be in a cloud. I can only imagine Mount Baldy is much higher in the air might be harder to breathe. I seriously hope Julian will make it out alive and that he is healthy. I will pray for him.
Very sad indeed. He was wonderful in A Room With A View - he had a measured coolness about him that worked really well with Denholm Elliot's performance as his father. It's still one of the most rewatchable, romantic movies ever - and still very funny. I still love it. But the current news isn't hopeful. But he was a vital part of a movie classic that wouldn't be the same without him - and he'll always be remembered for that. And on that note, can we pleased drop the 'know it all' cracks from the hiking experts? He was experienced, smart, and he knew what he was doing, so out of respect, leave it.
