Those woven tatami floors are so comfortable to sleep on. When I visited Japan a few years ago, one of the hotels I stayed at had those mat floors and bedding you pull out of the closet to sleep on (then during the day you put it back in the closet and have more floor space). The smell of the room was very nice because of the mats.

Rehabilitating those place are huge projects, and most of the places have so big dampness damages, that they cant be repaired. But amazing if you can work it out :)
I like your idea of refurbishing old abandoned houses and making them into homeless shelters. I agree with some of the comments by some folks here about the large sum of money that is required for the project. I'm thinking you can start small. Go for a smaller home for your first project. You can move onto bigger buildings once you gain more experience. I'll definitely like to contribute. Keep us updated! This is exciting! Good luck!!

In a tradesman in Chicago and am always sad seeing these abandons buildings with amazing architecture left to fall apart and have thought of similar ideas for refurbishing them. One thing I have learned though is most these places in order to make them habitable need close to a million dollars if not more for asbestos and lead abatement. This has to be done also just to tear them down so the owners leave them vacant and rotting till the city takes ownership of them for demolition. There is no cost effective way around this in most situations. Good luck if you go forward with this.
