    I’m surprised that the fitter put all his tools & materials on the brand new and no doubt expensive cloth when he was installing the rails & leather! Surely he should have had a separate table on wheels for his equipment. Nothing should have been placed on the new cloth once fitted...
    I was also surprised he used the slate bed as a workbench when recovering the rails.

    Great video, top job. Is there any chance now you’ve had the new cloth fitted to do a video on the table upkeep? Brushing, napping , ironing etc? To keep the table in tip top condition.

    I had a NZ snooker table built by Barton-McGill in 1925 , the 5 slates were 2 inches thick , possibly South African sourced.Super structure was cedar i think and the turned legs , ends, sides and rails were mahogany.

    Our club just had all 10 tables done, so I got to watch it being done a few times. It's mega skilled work. Mr Barton is your table heated? Mark Lloyd at our club has heating on his Star and it makes the balls float in. It is lovely to play on and going back to another table, you can feel the difference straight away.

    Great job, i do my own 8ft table and when i refurbished it as new it plays just like it first did when built , having the right tools and things to get the tables right cost money and time but worth it to get the breaks you want, i got a 101 after i replaced the cloth my cloth is 26 oz and fast, i use 50mm balls on a 78mm pockets tight jaws to test you out, not bad for a old table that cost me 99p and delivery £160.

    As posted , the wood preparation really is an easy job , you could have easily do this yourself , Its all about prep during the stage when the sides have been removed . remember the cloth is going to be replaced so it doesnt matter you removing this
    Then simply sand down with an orbital sander start with a 300 grit to remove the old varnish , then progressively sand with a finer grade of paper 1000 grit to prepare the wood for staining , apply a dark oak stain , , several manufacturers available . apply with either a spray gun or with a cloth . finally sand down with a 2000 grit to get an even finish . Once you have allowed to dry Your looking for a smooth seamless appearance , Its time to seal the wood with a lacquer , this can be painted on leave for 48hrs to harden before using a polisher to bring out a fantastic shine . Well worth attempting and to be honest you really cant go wrong have a bit of confidence and save a bit of money ,. Seems a shame as now you will have to pay for the sides to be redone again . cheers

    I play Chinese Pool and there's a chinese cloth, that's really simillar to Strachan, which is the Andy x5 and x10. I bought this cloth and I'm using it on my 9ft table. It's pretty accurate and the wool is as good as Strachan's for what some professional players told me. But one thing that I've noticed is that when doing a deep screw or something that requires getting too close or even hitting the cloth, the cloth gets damaged too easily, exactly like you've shown in the beginning of the video, those "grated" marks on the wool. Since I don't have any experience playing on Strachan, I'd like to ask you. Does that happen with Strachan as well?

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't happen on the Strachan cloth just after 1 or two shots. The marks you see on mine have built up over 1 year.

    Looks great Steve ,not sure if you have your cloth stretched at all ,had mine stretched after six months ,which was September .I only asked as I noticed you have had the tip x pen markings and that is permanent ,I use a white glass pencil ,as it rubs out, and when you need the stretch you don’t have two d line markings .New pocket leathers always look good .I have only used no 10 and 6811 ,not tried the super fine .

      Hi Mike,
      Ah that's interesting to know about the glass pencil. Thanks for that 👍
      I don't actually bother to have it stretched. I used to, but I found no difference whenever it was stretched. As it's reclothed once a year anyway, it just seems like an unnecessary expense even if you did get a tiny, tiny improvement in speed.
      I'm very happy with the Superfine. It's meant to play fast and responsive like a number 10, with a bit more durability.

      I’m guessing your table gets lots more use due to lessons ,so the cloth may wear faster so maybe a stretch is not always needed .My lastvone was ok but this new one fitted to,y new table in February had just started to produce a bit of roll under the fingers or hard brushing ,it now plays like lightning .I may have to call upon you for a lesson next year ,home or away .I’m. Breaking down in the 90’s due to pressure on myself trying to knock a ton in again ,had a few some years ago but have developed a mental block trying to get one on my table ,it’s a steel block Westbury ,and the middles can be tricky if your not on ,basically I feel I’ve got a bit sloppy .hopefully next year we can sort it If we get back to normal .I may email you soon Steve ,Cheers.

    Outstanding video Steve my boy! Seen a great number of recloths in person but never the cushions of a steel blocker, personally the re pocketing and netting would drive me insane but there's a certain meditative art to how they tack the cloth on! Fine work and top quality content!

      Thanks so much. Really glad you enjoyed the video. It's very satisfying watching a table being done, certainly for me anyway 😃
