    When Pavarotti reaches 3:15 he may very well be the best in this aria in that moment. If that’s a high-B it is exquisite!
    His acting in this is far better than critics ever seem to credit him; he’s sincere and moving. In his upper range (and his famous high-Cs) his warm vocal texture is definitely with Jussi Bjorling and Franco Corelli in their prime.
    I am aware this is merely my subjective opinion.

    Anyone who believes Pavarotti was in his twilight years when he sang Che Gelida Manina should listen to this 1986 aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. Aria begins with distance shots, then moves so close that if you are very vigilant, at one point you will see tears in Pavarotti's eyes. Please stay through the 3:32 applause. Reminder on Ballo: this is the scene where Ricardo, full of anguish and self torture, commits to signing a letter which will send his close friend and that man's wife to another country because Ricardo doesn't want to commit adultry with the man's wife, Amelia, who he loves. th-cam.com/video/KuSWLb-lxmk/w-d-xo.html

    • @valasina2015
      @valasina2015 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Jay. As you know, of course, they are not visible here because they weren't wearing them. In fact, I don't think they even had body mics when this video was made. It's all in the voice--the long, difficult road to achieve that beautiful sound we so treasure. We have lost our beautiful opera singers to time. . . .

    • @jaytamayo4694
      @jaytamayo4694 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valasina2015 Its just amazing how greatly these opera singers were. Mics were placed somewhere out of sight. Same when he sang Christmas song in Canada. Surely mics at the time appear to be better in terms of absorbing sound. In a sense Hong-kong/Chinese kung-fu films are still better than Hollywood. You show the skill of the artist even is the story or the whole film is simple. Now in theter play the sets are fabulous but so far form what I see, one of which I saw in live theater, it was good BUT not as good as this one, not as powerful, not as close. Well it was cinderella. He he. Pavarotti is my standard of operatic singer. We cannot experience and find someone that can come close to him. I tried to sing like him once, I almost died. 😂 it was a Christmas song for saturday mass. We sing O come o ye faithful with Latin translation. I think I drained my blood and air supply. 😂😂😂

    • @valasina2015
      @valasina2015 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaytamayo4694 Hi, Jay. So glad you wrote me back. I was referring specifically to body mics, those small clip-on devices we see on TV all the time. You'd be amazed how powerful they are. Before electronics took over, as I'm sure you know, singers sang with no amplification. It simply wasn't available to them. Now we know that recordings of operas were made as far back as the early 20th century--almost nothing from that time has survived--what was used for recording was just basic recording equipment. Eventually, microphones were placed in the orchestra pit. But the singers themselves were singing with no amplification. Consequently, they were trained to project their voices from the orchestra level to the last upper tier of the opera house. And over the orchestra, too. Do not ask me how this is done. Today's singers do not have to develop their voices much because they have their mics. It's terrible. Take their mics away and you probably couldn't hear them past the 3rd row orchestra seating even without the orchestra playing! I am not exaggerating. Like you, I love Pavarotti. Until I hear something better--and I doubt I ever will, in my book, he is simply the greatest opera tenor to grace the stage of the opera house. Period. . No one else has that beautiful, clear, rounded, gorgeous, golden, ringing, Italian bel canto sound. An incredible, brilliant voice. So wonderful. Just a few notes and you know it's Pavarotti. More later, if you wish.

      @@valasina2015 Thank you very much for your reply. I appreciate them. And what was the tile of your book? I just one book of him - Pavarotti My Life. I learned their that he do not want to sing in a casino, he sang before Princess Diana while raining, he he the purpose of having having handkechief in his hands and the Sts. Paul and Peter Cathedral* save the day. Just wanna share something, hope you don't mind. When I was still in choir/s, I applied opera type singing to certain degree. I was indirectly even called the "Best" of our then Choir Master (but he lasted short cuz he was always late, he told us he sang aboad) maybe because aside from singing Bass during a rehearsal I sang "How Lovely is Your Dwelling Place" (a filipin mass song. My young co-members have no idea what I was doing and tells me to control my coice when it was controled. At first being a newbie I do not know what to do THEN I see Pavarotti on youtube. I think that helped me to improved my singing. When I tried to mimic his singing voice in a rehearsal for the first time, this new choir coordinator (just a coordinator not like the first one mentioned) told me, but in Filipino, "Oh you unleashed your power huh" something like that. And a doctor who sometimes joins us in singing said "I like that Pavarotti. But you better nailed it not only in rehearsal but ine the mass"
      This is not to boast but to share that my admiration to PAVAROTTI paid-off. I miss singing. Pavarotti in like God singing for us. NOSE BLEEEED. Is there anyone who can come close? Certainly none. Not this this century, not in the next millenium, not in another 65M year, he he, NEVER! Luciano Pavarotti is THE ONE.

      @@jaytamayo4694 The book is titled The King and I, written by his long-time manager, Herbert Breslin. Available on Amazon and probably Ebay. Some of it is sensationalized, I think it is because Breslin wanted to sell his book. But in general, unlike what other people have said, I found it pretty straightforward. Some people think he was sometimes insulting towards Pavarotti. I would not have used that word. Healthwise, Pavarotti had difficulties. Outside of his weight problems, he had back surgery, neck surgery, a knee replacement, and a hip replacement. I am sure these conditions affected his career. Anyway, some people want to discuss his failings; I want to applaud his remarkable opera career.

      Okay, perhaps his voice has an agility that's diminished here, but this is by far the greatest dramatic performance that I've found. At this stage, he has taken this aspect of his performance to levels few have touched. I think that as a package, this is the best performance in spite of it not being his best singing. The last note, for example, is underneath the pitch the whole time until just before he flips the /r/. It is still a fantastic rendition.

On a TH-cam interview, Pavarotti said that if television had been readily available to Corelli, he would have had a much bigger career. Remember that Corelli is a spinto tenor, so his voice is more powerful than Pavarotti's. Pavarotti was a lyric tenor. But one type of tenor is not better than another, and though many people prefer the excitement and power of Corelli, it is Pavarotti who has the extraordinary vocal beauty.
