Expensive Tech I Love!

  • Quinn shares some of his favorite-admittedly bougie-tech products he's used in 2023.
    Eight Sleep - snazzy.fm/jL
    Himiway - snazzy.fm/Hc
    Roland F701 - snazzy.fm/aH
    Prusa XL - snazzy.fm/wq
    The Eight Sleep mattress cover has been seen on a lot of your favorite channels, but always as a paid ad. What does a tech reviewer really think of the company's crazy expensive liquid-cooled smart cover? E-bikes are cool, but I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: most e-bike brands share components from the same, small, handful of factories and the products themselves are not much different than they'd seem. The Himiway Zebra is a perfectly fine bike with nicer-than-average components at a lower cost-likely at the expense of after-sales support. Oh, and pianos. Pianos are cool, but they're crazy expensive. How good could a "cheap" digital piano be in 2023? The Roland F701 gets a lot of things right-including the sound-but does it feel like a piano worthy of its price? Last, 3D printing has died off from the "fad" it once was, but it's more useful than ever and the latest printers are insanely capable. The Prusa XL has a 360^3mm build volume which makes way for some BIG projects. Find out about all of this and more on this week's episode of Snazzy Labs.
    Disclosure: Products in this video were provided for review free-of-charge; however, that has not impacted my opinion of them. I've been a product reviewer for 15-years and offending a company or criticizing a product is sometimes part of the game. My "boss" is you, the viewer; not brands.

      There's two reasons a company will usually go for a subscription model: 1) the cost of ongoing development of certain features of the product means that we need to charge concurrently to fund that development, or 2) Screw you, you clearly have the money to spend on our product, why shouldn't we continually charge you for the pleasure of using it?
      Especially if there's no similar competitor on the market, I find it hard to believe that $2500 for a bed cover, water pump, heating element and tubing isn't enough to turn a profit. I know R&D and whatnot is also a factor, but surely the subscription is unnecessary... The app development is probably negligible compared to the upfront cost of the manufacturing.

    • @ClayBeans
      @ClayBeans 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bilalsadiq1450 I'd argue there's a third: investors won't give you money if you don't have a subscription model, as that is a much easier way to build long term revenue than constantly finding exponentially more people to buy your product.

    The scary thing about the Eight Sleep is if the company goes belly up. To no fault of your own that core functionality probably stops working. With no way to alter it. Unless these types of companies explicitly say these features will be unlocked in the event they can no longer provide support. I’m hesitant to jump onboard.

      Yeah I'm not liking the idea of Sleep as a Service becoming normalised. If I'm going to have smart tech in my bed then I think I need it to be open source. I've learnt that I can't trust companies to do the right thing, so before I buy something that may come to be a major part of my sleep schedule, I need the code (and ideally schematics).

  • @MurryEB
    @MurryEB 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +98

    You were 100% selling me on the Eight Sleep (I sleep like crap because I can’t get the temperature right), until I saw the subscription. Hell absolutely no, if I’m spending that kind of money, and I’m happy to given the tech behind it, you’re not locking me out of it because you don’t think I’ve spent enough yet. Like you said some of the features require active development and I get that, the subscription being needed for some features isn’t a bad thing, but effectively making this awesome product a $2500 heated mattress cover if I don’t want to subscribe should be criminal.

    I think tech products should get warning labels similar to the ones ones on cigarettes, where it's made clear that it has a cloud connection, that that is a disadvantage, and that it will no longer work once the company goes under. It only has disadvantages for anyone involved.

    I'm laughing at the idea of a waterbed being bougie, I had one in the 80's complete with user controllable heating and no subscription but my parents got rid of it in the 90's when hypothermia fears gripped the nation. It was the only bed I could comfortably sleep on my back, regular mattresses I have to sleep on my side. The electric bike is one thing I want to get, I don't need the expense of a car for getting around town. I've been thinking of getting a piano, electric or percussion, but I'm watching estate sale auctions to get one cheap. 3D printers are an unnecessary expense for me, I've been perfectly happy ordering from Thingverse for the few things I've wanted.

    Quinn - may I suggest looking at the Kawai CA701 for your next piano? It's got the Grand Feel III action, which most people will consider as close as you'll get to the feel of a real piano action without spending a whole lot more money on something that's basically a digital with a full piano action inside. I've got the predecessor, the CA79, and as someone in a very similar situation who took 12 years of piano lessons: it's an excellent piano that's a pleasure to play on.

    The thermal alarm for the bed would suck for me, cause I learned that my brain does NOT like heat when sleeping.
    I consistently will get nightmares if I sleep with too many blankets on me. Ever since I figured that out, I've slept either with a light blanket, or with like half of my body exposed to air. I found that the last few times I had nightmares, I was covered with blankets and sweat.
    Also can't sleep with PJs/clothes on, mainly cause I can't stand the loose fabric rubbing and tugging on the bedding, but partially to prevent overheating.

    If you're looking for the more realistic touch, there's Yamaha AvantGrand NU1XA which has true acoustic upright piano action, also Kawai NV5S and K300/K200.

    Was going to get the 8 sleep before until I looked on the website and saw the subscription. Either charge for the tech upfront or a subscription, not both.

  • @hello-jonas
    @hello-jonas 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Regarding eight sleep, I created a home-assistant prototype that, after some tinkering, can control, and record all sensors, and react to changes in my eight sleep, all without even connected to the internet.. call-home can suck it!
    **edit: most sensors, there are some I don’t even know what they mean.. maybe flow? Maybe fan rpm?**

    The Eight Sleep is very expensive for me, living in Slovenia and earning a regular paycheck here, but I was certainly thinking about it. Now that I found it its also a subscription, I certainly won't be thinking about it anymore, just too expensive to justify.

  • @dougdevine
    @dougdevine 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd love to buy the Eight Sleep but you're right their pricing model is what will keep me from buying it. I get they offer features that warrant the subscription cost which is fine, but the product itself will ware out and need to be replaced at some point. Subsidize the price of the cover with the subscription cost or remove it don't have a high price and monthly subscription.

  • @davidwestwoodharrison
    @davidwestwoodharrison 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I literally had another tab open looking at the 8Sleep until I heard that $15/mo price. Oddly never heard of it in their sponsored stuff with other creators.
    Quinn is spot on: paying a subscription is deterring buyers.

    Yep, was wanting to get a mattress for temp control, but I am not paying for another subscription. I'll be on the lookout for a company that doesn't see me as a perpetual money-printing machine, and in the meantime, I'll sleep better knowing I'm not paying those vultures.

    You should look at the Swiss Stromer ST7 if you like expensive e-bikes. It has an automatic electronic transmission, anti lock breaks, 240km range and 45km/h top speed. But it’s 14000€

    • @LarsFerdinand
      @LarsFerdinand 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Despite liking stromers, they have a very big Achilles heel: It's a wheel motor, so, unnatural center of gravity. It's not about the most expensive but the best compromise on all fronts. I'd take any bike with the new pinion motor over any stromer, every single day. And pay less. Heck, I'd get a POLE (100%CNC machined) and chose the components myself (hoping for the pinion with them soon).
      Stromer is overpriced BS.

    Wow. EightSleep looks so cool, but that pricing model is absolutely a no go. I won't even consider a product that expensive with most of its features locked behind a subscription. I see a bunch of other comments saying this, but I'm posting this in hopes that they see all these comments and reconsider their model.
