    • @bilalsadiq1450

      There's two reasons a company will usually go for a subscription model: 1) the cost of ongoing development of certain features of the product means that we need to charge concurrently to fund that development, or 2) Screw you, you clearly have the money to spend on our product, why shouldn't we continually charge you for the pleasure of using it?
      Especially if there's no similar competitor on the market, I find it hard to believe that $2500 for a bed cover, water pump, heating element and tubing isn't enough to turn a profit. I know R&D and whatnot is also a factor, but surely the subscription is unnecessary... The app development is probably negligible compared to the upfront cost of the manufacturing.

    • @ClayBeans
      @ClayBeans ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bilalsadiq1450 I'd argue there's a third: investors won't give you money if you don't have a subscription model, as that is a much easier way to build long term revenue than constantly finding exponentially more people to buy your product.

    The scary thing about the Eight Sleep is if the company goes belly up. To no fault of your own that core functionality probably stops working. With no way to alter it. Unless these types of companies explicitly say these features will be unlocked in the event they can no longer provide support. I’m hesitant to jump onboard.

      Yeah I'm not liking the idea of Sleep as a Service becoming normalised. If I'm going to have smart tech in my bed then I think I need it to be open source. I've learnt that I can't trust companies to do the right thing, so before I buy something that may come to be a major part of my sleep schedule, I need the code (and ideally schematics).

  • @MurryEB
    @MurryEB ปีที่แล้ว +99

    You were 100% selling me on the Eight Sleep (I sleep like crap because I can’t get the temperature right), until I saw the subscription. Hell absolutely no, if I’m spending that kind of money, and I’m happy to given the tech behind it, you’re not locking me out of it because you don’t think I’ve spent enough yet. Like you said some of the features require active development and I get that, the subscription being needed for some features isn’t a bad thing, but effectively making this awesome product a $2500 heated mattress cover if I don’t want to subscribe should be criminal.

    Quinn - may I suggest looking at the Kawai CA701 for your next piano? It's got the Grand Feel III action, which most people will consider as close as you'll get to the feel of a real piano action without spending a whole lot more money on something that's basically a digital with a full piano action inside. I've got the predecessor, the CA79, and as someone in a very similar situation who took 12 years of piano lessons: it's an excellent piano that's a pleasure to play on.

    I think tech products should get warning labels similar to the ones ones on cigarettes, where it's made clear that it has a cloud connection, that that is a disadvantage, and that it will no longer work once the company goes under. It only has disadvantages for anyone involved.
    An app is fine and good, but it should connect via bluetooth and work without any cloud service. Especially if remote access is as far fetched as for a bed.

    The thermal alarm for the bed would suck for me, cause I learned that my brain does NOT like heat when sleeping.
    I consistently will get nightmares if I sleep with too many blankets on me. Ever since I figured that out, I've slept either with a light blanket, or with like half of my body exposed to air. I found that the last few times I had nightmares, I was covered with blankets and sweat.
    Also can't sleep with PJs/clothes on, mainly cause I can't stand the loose fabric rubbing and tugging on the bedding, but partially to prevent overheating.

It was the only bed I could comfortably sleep on my back, regular mattresses I have to sleep on my side. The electric bike is one thing I want to get, I don't need the expense of a car for getting around town. I've been thinking of getting a piano, electric or percussion, but I'm watching estate sale auctions to get one cheap. 3D printers are an unnecessary expense for me, I've been perfectly happy ordering from Thingverse for the few things I've wanted.

The CE200 has the AWA Pro II real wood keys and the keys and pedals have the grand piano feel. Overall, that piano lasted like 11 or 12 years and is still going with the only repairs needing done were replacing the fuses. The Eight Sleep is very expensive for me, living in Slovenia and earning a regular paycheck here, but I was certainly thinking about it. Now that I found it its also a subscription, I certainly won't be thinking about it anymore, just too expensive to justify.

    Yo Quinn, serious question, why not try a weighted blanket? If you like the heft of a comforter but get too hot using it, a knit-style weighted blanket is a literal game changer. I can't go back. Do consider it if you haven't!

    The reason I haven't bought 8 Sleep is the pricing model. I will not pay to go to bed every night. I tried the product while visiting my sister, she had it in her guest bedroom. And Wanted to buy it then and there until I saw the paywall for the features. So completely agree please 8 Sleep no membership for core features and that they you will have my business.

    Regarding eight sleep, I created a home-assistant prototype that, after some tinkering, can control, and record all sensors, and react to changes in my eight sleep, all without even connected to the internet.. call-home can suck it!
    **edit: most sensors, there are some I don’t even know what they mean.. maybe flow? Maybe fan rpm?**

    Wow. EightSleep looks so cool, but that pricing model is absolutely a no go. I won't even consider a product that expensive with most of its features locked behind a subscription. I see a bunch of other comments saying this, but I'm posting this in hopes that they see all these comments and reconsider their model.
