    this video misses the entire reason lepin has a market in the first place. the most popular lepin sets are retired ones that arent in production. sets like the republic gunship and republic dropship with at-ot haven't been on shelves in years and the resale price (like you said) is increased to around $400 as opposed to lepin at roughly $50-$80.

      @TFEA A it's not an investment, I don't intend to sell anything. I had the chance to get a £100 Lepin Diagon Alley vs a £300 Lego one. • @jean-jacquesludot6560
    @jean-jacquesludot6560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +701

    The only reason why people STILL buy lepin is for the price. If LEGO made their sets much cheaper, lepin would kind of die.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      jean-jacques, also Lego needs to focus on better production. They always claim "we're out" when someone tries to buy a set two MONTHS after it came out and all demand has died down. Then once you realize they have PLENTY of time to make more, they discontinue it. Well, I guess they don't need my money. I have not bought a set new from them in years because of their unbelievably low production volume. If Lego demands eBay stop letting people sell used sets, their customers will definitely abandon them and even the guy who uploaded this video knows that!

  • @NickLavic

    Personally, I see number 1 as a problem. Lego discontinued so many sets for no real reason considering that most of the pieces are still in production. I understand that there is limited shelve space in stores but what's stopping them from selling all their sets on their website? For that reason, if I really want a discontinued Lego set and Lepin still makes a copy, I'll buy the Lepin.

    • @yeicore

      Exactly this. And the retired original one will increment it's value. So the copy will cost like 10x cheaper without exaggerations.

      @Arcaryon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love their official stuff and still buy on bricklink and their own site / retail but what you say rings way too true. Half of the copy cats only make a living because Lego discontinues popular series or, even worse imo. never gets them right in the first place, with the lord of the rings as a major theme, pirates and castle being so criminally neglected while online, all off brand stores sell these exact series and I am not just talking about copy cats either.
      Ultimately, it’s legos decision to overly focus on big sets instead of simply at least occasionally giving the people what they want :P

    Unfortunately LEGO forced my hand to buy a Lepin set. I had a dark age where I stopped building lego kits. I came back to Lego this year after I found an old set my dad bought me. I wanted to get a pirate ship...turns out it was retired and around 1200 usd on ebay. An insane price. the Lepin version was 84 usd, imagine that? I would gladly pay 200 usd to Lego for that set. But the geniuses at Lego decided to retire it so early despite its massive popularity 10 years ago.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@xalnilam2739The point is that they ignore core groups of their fans. Castle hasn’t gotten a regular series in years, pirates is likewise dead, lord of the rings only gets 500€ iconic sets instead of the armies people actually want…
      Lego ignores their own customers demands so the customers go elsewhere. Not even mentioning the prices. Seriously, have you seen the decline of city sets? Insanity, the value is so incredibly out of balance and it’s sadly not the only series.
      That’s the point here, Lego should ALWAYS have castle stuff, always pirates - they could actually gain so much from a modular castle you could expand with a decent amount of minifigure sand fair prices. Instead, icon sets for hundreds of dollars that are simply way too overpriced a lot of the time. Look at the D&D one.
      A non greedy price could make everyone happy and reach far more people - instead, they go so far beyond good and evil that it’s almost comical.

    LEGO uses better quality plastic for its building blocks.(EASY to pass on to the next generation)
    I still have my first set and building blocks.
    I even have lego blocks that are older than I am.
    These plastic stones are now 50 years old and not distorted or discolored at all.
    That is a very good performance for plastic.
    This high quality you will certainly not get with the Chinese copy
    The chance of getting deformed lego bricks or parts is very very small.
    If a part is missing in a set, lego does not do difficult and sends you the item to you.
    So a few years ago I dived myself again in the world of Lego because even if you slightly are older Lego is still fun.
    You haven t pointed out but the chance that you don t get value for your money is little small.
    Lego puts a lot of extra spare parts in his sets.
    I only can imagine buying fake lego when you don t have the money for it of missed some of the sets that you wanted to have for a long time.

    I'd like add my personal opinion regarding this "controversial" point. Firstly I wanna say I'm a Lego collector and Moc maker (just for my personal challenges of course), secondly i partially live in China since 13 years! Then: I can surely agreed that there are no doubts regarding all the copies products Lepin is doing on Lego (I personal bought some of them and I can confirm everything you said in your video!). But without enter that much in details can say also that Lepin it's an alternative for Chinese users (mainly children, in fact, in China, the "Moc concept" is still far from its means, adult work not play :) ! ), In China Lego sets are unbelievable expansive compare with several other local brands, more or less acceptable and Lepin , in China and in my personal opinion, it's one of the best (people doesn't care that much if copied, Moc or whatever...!). Another point of view if we projected Lepin in western (EU or US), definitely for “Lego purist” such "ashamed" copies are morally unacceptable… but sometimes even the financial strength of people are limited to purchase Lego and it's also not so right such "toys" are just affordable by few (I know this open a discussion about collecting, but if we're "funs" we'd not think about business, moreover I think Lego already made some action to avoid the sets reach high value after they've been dismissed from shops' shelfs, so…). Consider that even Lego is producing in China and the high quality is a cost, of course even here, but I think we all agree that the selling price of Lego products is really high and I personally don't care they produce Disney, Ghostbusters or other TM and I'd be charged for the rights fees they have to pay to them for me Lego is always traditional themes: Technics, Creators, Architects and City, all the others (not few indeed!!) are just commercial sets: for attract ours kids because TV push some formats instead of others and Lego follow the commercial tendency! Lego “costs” for the quality (molds, QC system, factory automation, R&D…) they have is definitely higher than Lepin (or others “compatibles” brands!), this must be recon in the selling price, which is right, but we don’t just pay for it (this is just an excuse today!) we pay for all the rest (as you mentioned in your video). More over I’d like to said that several sets produced by Lego today are picked from Lego IDEA or from the MOC and they don’t recognize to creators any prize (not just money!)… then we wanna talk about morally?! In conclusion (I think my comment is already long enough!), all these alternatives brands can found in the market can help to have more price competition, but even Lepin which today is the “official copier” of Lego, must be a signal to think that others can do also similar level of product and cannot just take advantage on the fact one can be collectable and other are just rubbish!
    Then totally agree about the copy but not agree about the other reasons which are neglectable compare with what should offer and what it’s right to pay. Who buy Lego (so I) will continue to buy it (no doubts!) but newer users (which might be never care about collecting!) they will looking for alternatives, which is definitely right and for us we’d not be blind only for Lego.

      Another thing : What is scandalous is the copyright prices of US entertainement licences like Star Wars or Disney. The products licencing has become a greedy trade since it has been industrialized by US elite lawyers which are no more than businessmen, the most greedy bunisessmen on earth actually. they produce nothing but greedy overcomplicated contracts, making our lives harder and complicated. Copyright is for songs movies and books.
    A trademark is a characteristic that identifies a product.
    An idea cannot be protected or owned by anyone under the law.
    A patent is awarded to someone who has agreed to explain how their product or invention works. They are then allowed to control the production of the product for a period of 25 years. After which anyone can produce the product under a different trademark.

    I only bought one Lepin set so far. My experience was better than expected but still I'm not really planning on buying another one. The reason I bought this one: The set was discontinued by Lego a long time ago and even some bricks were discontinued a long time ago. The price of buying the individual original Lego Parts would have been over 100 times more expensive than the Lepin set.
    They sold it without instructions and without a printed box. The only thing illegal they did in my case was use a copied and slightly edited version of Legos original box art in their online shop.
    In general they are clearly doing illegal stuff. But at least in my case they would have been completely legal if they'd just removed the image and replaced it with the text "equivalent parts for building Lego set _____".

    I agree with your points 100%
    BUT.....
    There are some benefits with Lepin
    1. There are many Lego enthusiasts out there that can’t afford the Lego price upfront. With Lepin as their alternative, it keeps their interest at bay until they can afford the real stuff. This is much better than giving up the hobby all together which doesn’t really help Lego either.
    2. Lepin does off some sets that Lego doesn’t. For example... they have the game of thrones series which Lego doesn’t. They also have Lord of the Rings which their version is more detailed (even though their precision is not on Legos level)

    Lepin gives the lower class and lower middle class segments of the population a chance to experience the 'lego' experience. Even when there is no lepin, Lego would not get any substantial business from this group of people as they simply cannot afford or unwilling to spend the money for it.

  • @sskywarpe

    I'm not arguing FOR Lepin, just against your logic. You say if people keep buying Lepin then Lego could go out of business. Then immediately say "that won't happen". Well then, it's not a point.
    You also say that you just enjoy buying Lego. Someone could just enjoy buying Lepin. Moot.
    You say you don't buy Lepin, but say the pieces don't fit. Hearsay. But when others complain their Lego sets were missing pieces, you dismiss the hearsay.
    You claim you're angry that Lepin copies box art and instructions, then later say you usually don't receive either.

    Here is a question I'm trying to solve. I would love to have a long retired Lego Maersk Train 10219 it looks awesome but it is so expensive now 350 eur vs the Lepin set 21006 would cost me 60 eur. I have no Lepin set and was never thinking about buying one. But what now ? 6:1 ratio is sick! Most likely I would replace all the moving parts with Lego and also use original PF to make it go.

      I sent off for the Maersk train yesterday. I've also got a Lepin cargo train in the "TBA" pile, and I'll review that in due course.
      As for power sets, Lego needs to get their act together. These things aren't as easy to find as they might be, and motors and battery boxes and electronics are the very things the Chinese are likely to do much much better. They might copy all your data, but they'll also produce an app that lets you control multiple trains better than Lego's klunky solutions.

    My 11 year old nephew would like a Lego Technic Bulldozer for Christmas. He wants to use the bulldozer to build a motorcycle track in his backyard sandbox. The Bulldozer that would do the job is model no. 8275. Unfortunately this has been discontinued and on ebay a new set is selling for $1200. As much as I love my nephew, I can't afford $1200! This is why I am considering getting my first Lepin Bulldozer. The Bulldozer is going to get dirty, used, and beaten up but for $100, it's justified. My nephew only own Lego sets and I have only supported Lego so I see nothing wrong with getting one Lepin set. You could blame Lego for discontinuing the Lego Bulldozer 8275. If they continued to manufacture it, I would buy it. There is no other authentic Lego Technic Bulldozer alternative that compares and that is why 8275 is selling for so much money on ebay. If you find me an authentic Lego version at a reasonable price, I will buy it. I do agree with you, however, the Lepin version is counterfeit.

So with the very little money I have left over I like to by Lego sets, but Lego these days is so unfairly expensive that I barely find it worth it. I cant afford any of the sets I really want without saving for a long time and the ones I can afford are very quickly finished. If I had more money I would be loyal to Lego all the way, but sadly it's just to pricey. I would like to add a little to support your video
    The design element of Lego system is actually quite an expensive component of Lego sets, but its cost is hidden within the price of Lego. In fact, if you try to buy the parts to build a set either from Lego or from bricklink etc, it will cost you some 3 times the cost of the set.
    The manufacture of Lego bricks involves the design of molds to high precision (not accuracy !), but apart from that the entire process is automated and needs few people from start to end.
    In contrast the process of design involves a large number of people with various stages in the design process.
    Story-design (there are themes), third party license, QA (is it robust and easy to build), art work, printing and such like; several of these you mention.
    The issue with Lepin is that that getting round the expensive part - design - and since the business model of Lego is to hide this cost in their sets, it is prone to being easily undercut by unscrupulous companies. So, yes you get cheaper bricks but in the long term it will break the market. Obviously many people believe that there is no problem is doing anything you like in business as long as you make money, but that is the role of patent and TM - and then get upset when it happens to them.
    I don't think Lego will be "broken" by Lepin, and their current downturn has many other factors due to the current economic cycle, but they will fight their corner.
    I will finish with a final question : Is it OK to buy Lepin dis-continued sets - since this does not impact directly Lego (though does effect the re-sale value, and can effect perception).

      For me, the quality is just not there yet with other companies. I'd put Megabloks at a distant #2, but even their block connections are so inconsistent. Some are perfect, others are locked to each other for eternity, and some won't connect at all. When my son is playing and building, I'm right there building with him. When everything else that isn't Lego just falls apart, he's so disappointed & that honestly kills me. I haven't yet had to worry about that with Lego. More money, yeah, but when I look at all the other stuff and realize it was nothing but an absolute waste of money, it justifies the cost of Lego. And buy Lego on clearance, or buy bins of used bricks. It's on you if you pay full retail, idiot. 6 months ago I bought 2 bins of Lego, a little over 15,000 pieces, for 90 bucks. Washing them all sucked.
