  • Welcome to this informative video on mastering the 3 most important motions in Robert's Rules of Order. Presented by Susan Leahy MA CSP, a professional speaker and coach with extensive experience in training boards on Robert's Rules of Order and Board Dynamics.
    With close to 300 thousand views, this video is a must-watch for anyone looking to improve their understanding of the fundamentals of Robert's Rules of Order. Susan has successfully trained over 10,000 boards across the US and Canada, making her a leading expert in the field.
    In this video, Susan shares valuable tips on the 3 most important motions used in most meetings: The Main Motion, Amendments, and Amend the Amendment. Unfortunately, these motions are often misused, making it crucial for everyone on your board to master them to ensure efficient and effective meetings.
    By watching this video, you will gain a clear understanding of these 3 motions and learn how to use them correctly, which is essential in learning Robert's Rules of Order and getting your board working cohesively as a team.

    Thanks for the videos, I'm the president of a local for a union. I help look after over 200+ employees. There's always someone trying to highjack meetings. Right now we do speed voting for new GMM members. Previous meeting chairmen sucked for 10 years, hurting participation and not meeting quorum. • @RobertsRulesOfOrder
      @RobertsRulesOfOrder  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question. When a motion has been moved and seconded the chair will ask, "Is there any discussion?" at that point members can do 2 things. They can raise their hand (and if they get called on) they can #1. Debate for or against the motion or #2. Make another higher ranking motion (like an amendment, postpone to a certain time etc. Thanks for reaching out and know that you can contact me to do live trainings or webinars for your organization through my site www.RobertsRulesMadeSimple.com. I thought amendments had to be within the "scope" of the original motion. The problem is that how do you define scope. This is how scope was explained to me using your CD purchase motion as an example.
    So, if the motion was to purchase 10 CD's then the SCOPE for an amendment would be from 0 to 9. An amendment to purchase 12 would be outside of the scope of the original motion and would be illegal.
    Does this sound right?

      @susanpatrick7813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I understand your question. I hope this helps. Each board member gets to vote one time on each motion. If there is an amendment to the amendment, an amendment and a main motion on the floor. To clear that item of business the chair will take a vote on each and each board member has one vote for each. Treat each of them separately. First, vote on the amendment to the amendment then vote on the amendment and then finally vote on the main motion.

    Cool video, simple, direct, to the point.
    However I was wondering in that initial stage of talking about information, how do you define business, as different from that? Is it that you are ( just talking ) until someone wants to propose an action, a course of action, i.e. do something, reserve time, allocate resources or discuss the scope of a problem or project. Does this imply a problem, a project or both? Is that how you would define business, as solving a problem or working a project? In other words, what motivates a meeting, and how do we know we are in one and when this can be useful. I think most people just learn enough about this to get the "floor" so they can talk and control to get their point across.

    • @demspunkdamerica3rdbananar207
      @demspunkdamerica3rdbananar207 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You state: "...in that initial stage of talking about information, how do you define business...".
      SINCE you are a TAXPAYER, let's start defining POLITICAL GET TOGETHERS as those things which have to do with ALLOCATING Your HARD-EARNED TAXES.
      WHY ELSE ARE YOU THERE? WHAT BROUGHT YOU THERE? Why not a disco, or a bar? WHY a Group having to do with HEARING AND PASSING MOTIONS AFFECTING THE POLITY?
      BUSINESS is DEFINED as MEETING with OTHERS to INCREASE ("X").
      X is usually MONEY, RECREATION,/KNOWLEDGE which benefits LIFE (knowledge in pleasure/comfort/safety/order).
      IF you go into any group, and YOU DON'T INCREASE in anyone of the above, then it's called "wasting your time". YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO WASTE YOUR LIFE. It's what heroine addicts do: THEY MEET, BUT NEVER ADVANCE in money, recreation, or knowledge which benefits life for all.

      Greetings John! Thanks for reaching out and for your comment. This is where many people get lost so your concussion is normal. I agree that it can seem counter intuitive at first but if you put it on paper and visually see what happens it might make itself even clearer.
      Let me try to support a bit more:
      If you have a motion, amendment and amend the amendment on the floor you have to start by voting on the amending the amendment and then regardless of if it passes or fails you vote on the amendment and then once you have voted on the amendment you vote on the main motion. Once you have voted on the main motion that business item is complete and you move on to the next item on the agenda. Remember the amendment are all connected and they effect what will ultimately be in the main motion.
      If the amendment to the amendment passed it becomes a part of the new amendment.
      If the amendment to the amendment fails then the amendment stays the same.
      Your confession is normal. This part of Robert's is like mental yoga!!! If I can be of any support please visit me at www.RobertsRulesMadeSimple.com or email me at susan@robertsrulesmadesimple.com

      @user-ju5rt6ph1o 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once a main motion is made and seconded it can be debated, voted on, or changed by subsidiary motions. You discuss ONE THING AT A TIME. If an amendment is on the floor you only discuss the amendment to main motion. Then when you vote the only thing you vote on is the amendment leaving you with an amended main motion.

    The ignorant out here amongst us immediately notice we're lacking an answer to the question of amendments to other attributes after an amendment concerning one attribute has been proposed.
    Let's assume a motion to buy 1 DVD is proposed (, and the amendment is made to 3 DVDs. Now, someone wants to change the DVDs from studio versions to live versions. We cannot amend the "3 DVD Amendment" with something other than the quantity (if I've understood correctly). Must we therefore amend the *original* motion with the format which means we revert back to one DVD, effectively discarding the first amendment? Or must we accept or discard the first amendment for quantity before considering the second amendment for format, meaning either the 3 DVDs were rejected and we're back to the start or the 3 DVDs were accepted so now it's either 3 studio or 3 live DVDs?
    If we can only afford live versions at 2 DVDs or less, then can't someone remove the option for live DVDs by being the first to propose and to then propose more than 2?

  • @edwardlangdon4856

    Is this a sales pitch for her Video? kind of left me hanging here. You have a main motion and a amendment and a amendment to the amendment. So how do you Vote on all three? Do you vote on the main Motion first and then on the amendment and the amendment to the amendment?

    • @susanpatrick7813
      @susanpatrick7813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings Edward. Thanks for your comment. It is true that this video is a sales pitch for The Robert's Rules Made Simple Solution. The RRMS is the cornerstone of my training and it teaches and gives easy to follow examples about The 7 Fundamental Motions used in most meetings. There is so much to teach and I created these small videos to create awareness and provide information in quick bites. I have created my online training for those who want a more comprehensive training and understanding of how to use Robert's. To answer your question. If you have a Main Motion, an Amendment and an Amend the Amend on the floor (meaning each motion has been moved and seconded) then you will have to vote on ALL three of those motions. Frist the chair will take a vote on the Amend the Amendment, regardless of if it passes or fails you move down to the Amendment. If there is no further discussion on that motion (the amendment) then the chair will take a vote on the Amendment. Regardless of if the amendment passes or fails the chair then re-opens discussion on the Main Motion and once the discussion is done the chair will take a vote on the Main Motion and then you are done with that item of business. I hope that this explanation helps and isn't too confusing. Thanks and Happy Meetings!

  • @iamagi
    @iamagi 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    This example was easy. It gets a lot more complicated when there are several amendments to motion where they for example want to change the specific wording of a proposed text that might be a new rule to the organizations rule-book.
    Main motion
    |___"Proposed text"
    |
    |__Amendment
    ....|__Wording 2
    ----|__Wording 3
    ....|__Wording 4
    Having the 3 Amendments battling out and the winning amendment against the main motion is hard or impossible to make 100 % fair.

    • @user-ju5rt6ph1o
      @user-ju5rt6ph1o 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why you only debate one amendment at a time. If there are 3 amendments on the floor the most recent amendment moved, seconded, and restated by the chair, us debated and voted on first, then the 2nd degree amendment then the 1st until you are left with the main motion.
