You would need to know a bit about how typewriters work in order to identify the component that needs to be pushed away. You need to find the bar that each key presses on in order to actuate the ribbon lift and advance mechanism as that is the primary source of resistance in the mechanism. This can be held in a position such that the ribbon is kept lifted and slightly covering the text (hence why it isn't practical) while allowing enough remaining movement of the ribbon actuation bar so as to allow the ribbon to advance slowly and prevent wearing a hole through it. If you don't want to do any modding, then I would recommend experiencing the Hermes Ambassador or one of the Hermes 8 or 9 which should be similar.
