Who would’ve guessed so many people would have trouble with an Elantra trunk latch. Better yet, who would’ve thought there was someone out there concerned enough, knowledgeable enough, and willing enough to explain and document their cost-effective repair for others to see, do, and learn while saving a couple hundred dollars. Best $18.01 I’ve ever spent. Thank you, sir!
It's funny bc we got a recall letter for the trunk about a month ago lol. Something about the trunk won't release and people can get stuck in it. I'm guessing the part is the latch itself. Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video! I called Hyundai and they said it was a 4-5 hour job minimum and I’d need a rental car to use while they repaired this, in case it took more than a day. Bought the part for $11 on Amazon, and replaced it myself in 5 minutes all thanks to you!
THIS WORKS ! Thank you for posting such a quick and easy tutorial saved me time and money of going to a shop. Only suggestion would maybe be for women like me the 10mm socket requires a socket wrench also to twist the bolts off. 😂
Thank you for this video. It really was a simple fix with a cheap part from Amazon that came the next day. I can't even imagine how much the dealership would have charged.
Yea, was not impressed with our Daytona Beach Hyundai dealership...on hold for what seemed forever just to be told to call back later. So thanks for this video. TH-cam always amazes me, first on how DIY is often so easy and cheap, and second on how so many trades rob you blind.
I have an after market latch and it still stopped working. Couldn't get the trunk open by lever or fob. Saw a video that said pull the lever and press the fob at the same time. It worked.
Well i had a different issue. Instead of getting stuck and not opening mine decided not to close at all in the middle of the Walmart parking lot. Good thing is i didn't live far so I drove it home. Any ideas on how to get ot to close until i can get the part to replace the latch? I just got the recall letter a few weeks ago and really don't want to fool with them when its an easy cheap fix.
Maybe check that the trunk release lever in the car isn't stuck up. Maybe something got under it. You can always use a bungee cord to hold it down until then.
Hyundai issued a recall for faulty trunk latches for 2015-2016 Elantra. Not sure what the recall covers but it may be the entire latch replacement as shown in this video. You should check with your dealer to see if they replace the whole latch. Also check the recall website to see if you’re covered
If it won't latch when it closes you could give it a try and return the item if it doesn't solve your problem. If the back/trunk of your car is damaged or bent this probably won't help.
At the beginning of the video I mentioned I needed to pull on the trunk when pressing the button to get it open. The problem wasn't the latch releasing, it was the trunk not popping up. Because of this the trunk was auto re-latching itself. Thanks for watching Buddy!
What I used was a 10mm Socket and a Clip Removal Tool or Clip pliers. A flat head screwdriver could also be used to remove the clips. It's a pretty easy part to replace and can save you a few bucks. Thanks for watching!
My local body shop is charging me 260 to fix the trunk latch on my elantra and the dealership wanted 200$ just to look at it. Wish I would have watched this video before I dropped off my car smh oh well next time I'll know. 😊

There’s a recall on the trunk latch.
Thank you. We received notice from Hyundai a week or two ago.

Awesome vid, ordering my part now. Thank you
Glad this video could help! Good luck with your fix!
Thanks for sharing, my mechanic charged $60 to install. I would like to know if this same part fits my Hyundai Accent 2016.

i’ve tried a drill and a ratchet to get the 10mm bolts out and neither work. what can i do?
Any luck? Same here
I just used a 10mm socket only and hand twisted it off :) this video was great! It was a 10 min fix
Glad the video could help! Thanks for watching.

I do believe the recall is for this trunk latch. We got a notice in the mail a month or so after making this video. lol
Thanks for the video I've got to replace the same
Glad this video could help! It's a cheap and easy fix.
@jimmysoutlet It's really videos like the ones you made that makes TH-cam such a great resource for any type of repair. Again, thank you for sharing
What is the part that the latch locks into called ?
I was finally able to find it by searching " trunk lid latch hook".
Mine won't close, will replacing it help it close as well?

Well buddy how did you get into the trunk when it wouldn’t let you open the trunk from the outside

Another question, what are the names of the tools I need to have? I'll try to replace it myself. If that's not possible, I'll take it to a mechanic.
