    I got mine for $17 at Hobby Lobby. All their models are 40% off right now (1-15-20). I am not expecting the greatest kit of all time for $17 considering that most 1:48 combat aircraft that I like are north of $35. Very pumped to work on this.

    Looks like a decent kit. May have a little trouble getting fuselage together. Thanks for sharing.

    Looks like a nice kit, although it has some issues as you pointed. Not an aircraft builder myself, but i wanna do an f14 tomcat. Nice review my friend, thanks for sharing.

    Ok review but if you don’t mind, I’d like to offer up some constructive pointers.
    When reviewing kits, it does help to do some basic research on the subject and perhaps the history of the kit also. A lot of modellers specialise in their chosen subject so know what parts are for etc but it’s the new modellers you should be thinking about here who have either never seen the subject or a model kit. I’m very familiar with F-14 and the specifics on the aircraft used in the Top Gun movie. Couple of things:
    The rear crew member was known as a RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) which preceeded the WSO which was only introduced when the US Navy got the Super Hornet.
    On the second page of your instructions there was a blacked out area on your sprue map. This is because the kit was originally issued by Monogram USA hence the raised detail but it was also adapted for the “Black Bunny” kit which is the F-14D version with GE F-110 engines. That sprue you weren’t sure about are the parts to make the GE Nozzles and not used on the F-14A hence why they’re blacked out on the sprue map. Because of the added parts, the kit can make any of the three F-14 versions ie F-14A, B or D although the instrument panels only depict the early A version however in the case of Mavericks jet, your instructions are geared only for the A version anyway.
    Guessing the names of the weapons is also not great for people watching. Most kit instructions will state what they are but Revell has a nasty habit of not including that information. If you don’t know, don’t guess.
    Aircraft flight surfaces have different names. Wings are wings but the vertical ones at the back are Tail fins or Vertical Stabilisers and the ones behind the wing below the fins are Horizontal Stabilisers or elevators. The F-14 and other fighter jets refer to them as Elevons as they act independently to roll the aircraft as well as increase the pitch angle up or down as an elevator would.
    Hope this information is intended to help you, not to criticise. Happy modelling.

    • @Grungydan
      @Grungydan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@sleeplessknight99 To be fair, one not need know everything about something to build a model of it. Are you guys aeronautical engineers? No? Better not build a plane. Certified automobile mechanics No? Oops, no cars. Surely you don't design and build tanks? Dang, no armor models for you.
      Some people get way too uptight about a hobby that entails gluing bits of plastic to other bits of plastic.

    I've built this kit many times in my younger days and for me if I bought this kit it would be only to practice my weathering skills. The cockpit and landing gear are pretty good . The canopy is nice. The engines and ordinance are terrible, replace or omit them. But, the worse thing about this kit is not the raised panel lines. It is the horrendous seam line where the nose top and bottom come together. All the times I built this kit I could never get that seam line corrected.

    They use the older kit because it would cost too much to redo the whole thing in case that obvious fact escapes you. Had they did that we'd have spent 18 mins hearing you complain about the cost of the kit rather than a few imperfections on something was designed to be a model not a replica, just in case you aren't aware of the difference between the 2 terms.

    Hi there. I just discovered your page. I'm an experienced modeller but on ships and diorama. I've only ever built one plane years ago as a novice. May I ask a dumb question please? What's your recommendation for nose weight with this model? My daughter's been watching TG and asked me if she could make Mavericks plane. Also does this just include one flight crew? Thank you

    Good lord the plastics are atrocious compared to modern offerings. I've already bought the kit but I haven't opened the box yet. I believe I'll be doing as you mention in the video: buy a good kit and use the decals from this ancient artifact to make Mav's jet.

      to be honest... the model itself is really not that bad and surprisingly holds its own 21st century. The only issue it has is fit. Takes some time and care. The major issue I personally have with the kit are the horrible inaccurate decals. The only thing they got right (which were fake from the beginning) were the squadron emblem. But the stenciling is inaccurate and the national insignia is just completely fake wrong.

    Somewhat deceptive packaging as this is a old rebox being punched out in China. Price is good but it's really a poor kit by today's standards.

  • @ILSRWY4
    @ILSRWY4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just so you know.... the decals (Deee-Kal) are completely wrong. The National Insignia (star-n-bar) is not even real or accurate for United States. And the F-14 stenciling are also (although somewhat convincing) not accurate. The electro-illuminecent formation lights (the green stripes on the decal sheet) ARE NOT GREEN on the real aircraft. They are a pale yellowish-cream color. The only thing on the decals that are close to accurate which were fake from the start, is the squadron insignia (round blue VF-1 design for the vertical stab). The real movie tomcats had just come from a deployment and had all the standard F-14 stencils and national insignias. The only thing the film producers did was paint that Squadron's design on the vertical stab. Otherwise they are standard F-14 markings. I'm surprised Revell botched the national insignias soo badly. Not impressed with this kit.

    • @RCUKScaleModels

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RCUKScaleModels No. not what I am saying AT ALL. EVEN THE MOVIE filmed aircraft had the correct insignia. i said "The real movie tomcats had just come from a deployment and had all the standard F-14 stencils and national insignias." That was MY POINT. The only thing Fake on them was the squadron Design on vertical stab. EVERYTHING ELSE was standard REAL stencils and insignias. Revell purposely made theirs Fake which is not even accurate for the movie used planes.
