    Tom snyder was a true broadcaster through and through. You can tell he was so passionate about what he did while always being so humble about it at the same time. A legend in American TV.

    Dan Ackroyd doing Tom Snyder was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on SNL . Smoke all over - trying to hide the guest identity just slayed me . This is 2022 ,and I’ve tried to see if I could find on TH-cam or whatever . It’s nowhere to be found . I was saddened to hear Tom passed, and he only lived about twenty miles from where I live .

      No he didn't. You want proof? Alrighty...Listen back to the list of SNL's "Original" cast he said he interviewed...He mentions Bill (as in Bill Murray) as one people he interviewed. That's a LIE. You can watch that interview here on TH-cam. Go check it out. Bill wasn't a member of the "Original" cast, he replaced Chevy Chase after Chevy left the show. Also, Tom Out Of Touch Snyder didn't mention Dan (as in Dan Aykroyd).

    I always loved Tom's stories at the beginning of each *Tomorrow* show: "I was walking down 5th Avenue on this very gorgeous summer afternoon with my line producer, Marvin Katz, and who should I see coming my way, but the very fine actor, Mr. Wilford Brimley. You remember him, the Quaker Oats guy..............."
    Snyder told a story about coming across a homeless person in NYC who was selling what appeared to be old, vintage American coins for $100. Tom bought them and felt bad, thinking he took advantage of the poor guy. That was until Snyder took them to a New York City coin dealer and found out they were worthless.

    I really miss good old T.S. A great broadcaster. "Sit back, relax, fire up a color-tini, and watch the pictures as they fly through the air." Snyder was different than other late night hosts, most were comics, but his background was as a news anchor. Nevertheless, he was a funny guy and an excellent storyteller.

      Thanks! That was hilarious. Like two kids arguing.
      I saw Howard’s TV show in New York in the early 90s. The episode I happened to catch was a quiz show with two homeless contestants. The grand prize was a shopping cart full of aluminum cans. I admit I laughed because it was so outrageous and transgressive. Of course it was exploitative, but the contestants seemed genuinely happy to be on TV.
      Howard doesn’t appear to have changed much over the years. It’s funny to see him playing with Tom, but I give Tom credit for trying to keep the interview going. Howard can’t lose - the more outrageous he is, the better the publicity and appeal to his audience.
      If he acts ‘normal’ for a couple minutes, then he’s relatable. It’s also interesting to see how driven Howard is - focused on hawking his CDs, and brash about expanding to LA and other markets outside NY, Philly, and DC.
      I later moved to LA, and would listen to Howard’s show in traffic (just as he talks about), along with the Tim Conway Jr. Show. Howard’s fan base is extremely loyal.
      My favorite part is when the interview’s over and Tom storms away, waving Howard off, and Howard gleefully keeps waving his CDs before the cameras like a 12-year old kid just to eek out a few more seconds of exposure.

    You didn't have to love the guy, but there's NO denying Tom Snyder was one of the most interesting people on late night TV in the 1970's !!
    What was great about Tomorrow (Tom Snyder's show), was the fact that on those nights when he had boring guests, it VERY rarely ended up being a boring show because Tom Snyder was SO talented, and SO interesting himself........which (usually) meant there was going to be SOMETHING worth watching every single night, even if his guests were a complete snoozefest......

  • @GeneBurnett
    @GeneBurnett 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    A lot of what he didn't like about the way talk TV and TV generally was headed really resonated with me. I think it's gotten worse that even he could have imagined. There are things I love about internet, I'm on it right now and this is so cool to watch, but man, there are some things I really miss about the analog world, and Tom Snyder is one of them. He was and is one of those guys you can both make fun of and totally love at the same time. Jerry Seinfeld says the secret of TV was that a show has to feel like a place people want to be, a place they want to hang out in, and the Tomorrow show set, the way he talked, the whole vibe of the show was one of those "places". I'll never forget the night he had Johnny Rotten and another guy from the Sex Pistols on talking about Public Image Limited. They were acting like total dicks, circumventing all Tom's questions, deliberately misunderstanding whatever Tom said, it was both funny and really rude. Tom was struggling to reach them and at one point he pulled out a cigarette and Rotten says, "I'll have one of those..." And Tom says, as he hands him a cig, "I'll find a way to your heart yet buddy..." or something very close to that. I loved the whole thing. Tom never did reach them directly but the audience got a very good sense of what PIL was about so I'd have to call the interview a success. At the end, he was talking to the camera and crew and said at one point, after summing up the tiny amount of direct information that the guys had actually imparted, "Never again..." and I think he tossed the card that had their info on it into the darkness around him. Classic!

    Later with Bob Costas had some things in common with Snyder's Tomorrow Show and his Late Late Show. Both had no band, no studio audience and meaningful conversations. It's interesting how Snyder said that his one fear was a studio audience (which they tried for awhile on Tomorrow if I'm not mistaken).
