  • Kruger National Park - Which Animals can I Expect to see?
    The Kruger National Park is the oldest and the largest national park in South Africa.
    It offers fantastic game viewing opportunities. You can look forward to seeing all of Africa’s iconic safari species. This includes elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and zebra.

    Elephants
    There are around 13000 elephants in the Kruger National Park.
    The African Elephant, found in the Kruger Park, is the world’s largest land mammal.
    Elephants have an average lifespan of 70 years.
    These elephants have a very thick, wrinkled skin and are dusty grey in colour.
    Elephants have a tremendous appetite and can consume up to 280 kg of food each day.

    Lions
    It is estimated that there are in the region of 2 000 lions in the Kruger National Park.
    It is undoubtedly one of Africa's most unforgettable experiences to hear the roar of a lion at night.
    The deep roar of a lion can be heard over a five kilometer radius.
    Lions hunt mostly at night and rest during the day.
    They normally feed every three or four days, and will eat an average of 5kg to 7kg of meat in a day.

    Leopard
    Kruger National Park is regarded as the best place in the world to see a leopard.
    It is estimated that there are around 1 000 leopards in the Kruger National Park.
    Leopards have a golden yellow coat with black rosettes covering it’s body. This gives them the ultimate camouflage for the african bush.
    It is advised that in order to give yourself the best chance of spotting a leopard you should stick to the far southern region of Kruger.
    A leopard’s diet generally consist of small and medium sized antelope.

    Cheetah
    It is estimated that there are around 400 adult cheetahs in the Kruger National Park.
    The majority of this population is said to be found in the central and southern regions of the Park.
    The cheetah is known for its breathtaking speed. It is the fastest land animal on earth.
    A very interesting fact about a cheetah is that they never roar!
    They sound more like a friendly house cat and are even known to meow and purr.
    A cheetah’s diet mostly consist of small and medium size antelope.
    They do not form prides. They normally live in small groups of between four and six that consist mostly of groupings of brothers.

    Rhino
    It is estimated that there are about 2 600 white rhinos and 202 black rhinos remaining in the Kruger National Park.
    The rhino population has declined at an astounding rate due to the very unfortunate poaching crises of these precious animals.
    Black rhinos are browsers. They pluck leaves and fruit from the branches with their lips. They get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes.
    White rhinos graze on grasses. They have squared lips that they keep lowered to the ground.
    They mainly roam grassland and open savannah areas.
    Despite their weight and their bulk size rhinos can move fast!
    The white rhino is the bigger one of the two and can reach a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. The smaller black rhino can run up to 55 kilometers per hour.

    Buffalo
    There are about 2 500 buffaloes in Kruger National Park.
    They mostly move in herds. These herds can be enormous. Up to hundreds of them at times.
    The type of buffalo that you will find in the Kruger National Park are the Cape buffalo or the African buffalo.
    The buffalo is one of the big 5 and it is one of the easiest of the big five to spot.

    Giraffe
    The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. Adult males can reach an average height of 5 meters and females 4.5 meters.
    It’s uniquely long neck accounts for most of its height. These long necks make it possible for them to feed on the foliage of trees that is not accessible to other herbivores.
    Giraffes mostly communicate by using their body language as their main medium of communication. They do not communicate vocally very often.

    Hippo
    There are around 8 000 hippos in the Kruger National Park.
    A hippo can be very dangerous to humans. They are known as the world's deadliest large land mammal. They have very sharp teeth.
    Hippos are semi-aquatic mammals. They can remain submerged for five minutes.

    Zebra
    A zebra is one of the animals that are the easiest to identify in the Kruger National Park.
    Zebras are highly social animals. They like to associate with other animals such as giraffes, impala and kudu.
    Their most common association is with the wildebeest.
