Matt Furniss, this guy is just unbelievable, he did understand the essence and translated it to perfection using genesis capacity to the max ... feel those beats, bass, and what about those "dark asian" instruments and rhythms. All these factors really make justice to the name of the game when you listen to every track.
I seen in an interview he said he did not even use the extra PSG soundchip at all which would have added extra sounds for layering, that is even more impressive that his music sounded so good.
Still love every song on this game. Instantly transfers me back to that kid mastering everything there was to master on MK II. Nostalgia is one hell of a drug!
If matt furniss worked on ultimate mk 3 soundtrack... man it would've been a killer. Matt furniss always maked sure that the genesis/mega drive sounds clean and good that people like. Every soundtrack he did in genesis/mega drive impresses me and never disappoint

I used to play MK2 when I was a child and I didn't know how the music is different for the arcade version. But I grew up listening to the Mega Drive OST and like this version so much!

Calling it complete shit, not really. It's really a great unique rearranged soundtrack, Matt Furniss did an amazing job with the music.
Another excellent sountrack composed by Matt Furniss. I myself prefer the first Mortal Kombat's soundtrack on the Mega Drive. Nothing beats that percursion! Matt Furniss was with the best in YM2612 music making!
In retrospect, I like the direction Matt Furniss took for the music -- the Sega version of MKII definitely had unique feel. Overall I actually prefer the Genesis game over the Arcade version 😂

The gameplay on both the Genesis and the SNES was quite similar but some people actually believe that the music on the SNES was better than the Genesis. On the SNES the music is just a little too corny it takes away from the dark and sinister setting that is Outworld. The music on Genesis was quite perfect and dare I say even better tham the arcade version.
@bee boo That would be a poor business decision, given that the Sega Genesis had an installed base of about 30 million plus systems in homes. You wouldn't make anything on that system? Plus people are saying the music was better on the Genesis, not that MK2 was better on Genesis than Snes. I think most can agree that overall the Snes port was better. The Saturn was a complete flop, only installed about 10 million units. Oh and ClaviusMusic was referring to the Snes not having comparable hardware to the arcade and of course it didn't. 200 buck system vs a 2000 dollar machine. The Snes had a soundchip with very little ram, something like 24 kb. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. It was a reference to the Snes not being able to replicate the music, that's it.

Thank you, Dustin for another great ost compilation. Really a great surprise. This ost is an example how the GEMS sound engine in the appropriate hands can provide an excellent sound. It is not only the music... the huge amount of diferent sound patches, voices, etc, added tho the music is something astonishing.
Late answer, but this doesn't use GEMS. It uses a custom sound driver, that Matt Furniss used for all of his genesis/mega drive soundtracks. I think you know this already, since your comment is 2 years old.

SNES for example only had 64kb available for sampled instruments + voices for ingame playing and ned to stop the game to refresh its audio ram.
@@joyridergt Yea GEMS is really good. Sadly, it never showed as much compared to other sound drivers on the genesis. Lazy composers gave it a bad name, which it didn't deserve. There are few or more good GEMS soundtracks out there, but not enough to show how good it is. The best GEMS soundtrack for me is comix zone, beacuse it pushes the limit of that sound driver quite good. It has some of the best guitars ever heard on the system, really good piano etc. And overall great tracks.
I have fond memories of the living forest theme. I’d start the match and immediately trip my opponent repeatedly and hear the end music before the theme starts to really pick up, lol
snes is better (in some ways) its closer to the arcade version and yes, played all the 2 versions back to back but the mega drive 1. no real voice acting "fatality" or the players names. snes version they screem if it really is hurding them. the mega drive? "oh!" only that. but all in all? the pc version beats the super nes and mega drive fully.

@Takashi Mike La música de snes para el mk2 es débil, no tiene el impacto que merece en la ambientación del juego debido a que los programadores hicieron una copia de menor calidad de la música del arcade, parece sonido midi. La versión de sega es practicamente música nueva que aprovecha el potencial de la consola, no busca imitar al arcade sino tener estilo propio, una obra notable de Matt Furniss, por eso tiene mejor percusión, suena mas potente y resulta mas sombría, es música única. Tengo tanto la sega genesis como la snes, la comparación de sonido dá ventaja a snes en el tema de las voces digitalizadas fundamentalmente, pero la música de fondo no es buena, tal vez por esto los programadores hicieron que los efectos de sonido se escuchen bastante mas por encima del nivel de la mísica, posiblemente con la intensión de que quede ''disimulada'' por los ruidos propios de los efectos del juego. Eso se nota mucho, no me he fijado en el emulador de snes, pero en la consola real en un tv de tubo se nota así.
@Takashi Mike La calidad de ciertas canciones SNES no las lograba por su sintetizador sino porque comprimía muestras de audio real que las utilizaba para crear la música, era como con el tema de las muestras de voces digitalizadas comprimidas. El sistema de sega era el que siempre usaba el sintetizador para crear la música desde cero, no usaba muestras de sonidos. Sega no comprimía in situ las muestras de sonido, tenía que comprimirlas por fuera antes de incorporarlas al cartucho y esto le quitaba calidad, como hoy se hace con el mp3, esa es la diferencia mas notable con la snes. Pero mas allá de esto te lo digo por experiencia: en el snes la música del mk2 y también la del mk1 es una música que copia al arcade con calidad mala, las melodías son parecidas, pero los instrumentos suenan radicalmente diferentes. Sega en lugar de transitar ese camino decidió hacer música diferente, que para los 16 bits suena notablemente mas llamativa que la de snes.
@Takashi Mike Reitero, hay notable diferencia en la musicalización entre snes y genesis, tanto en m1 como en mk2, tengo ambas consolas, las hago funcionar en un tv analógico, la música de sega es mas clara, mas nítida, mas potente en unas melodías, mas lúgubre en otras, la música de snes es monótona, le falta vida y eso no es responsabilidad 100% de los músicos que adaptaron el sonido para la snes sino que viene de arrastre del arcade, todas las composiciones del arcade son mejorables en cuanto a melodías, se las pudo haber trabajado mejor. Hasta en la percusión gana el genesis, y eso no es un tema de hardware sino que es responsabilidad de los músicos.

The DEFiNiTiVE 'Character Select' theme for MKII. Really gave the game a dark feel from the outset. They got it so wrong on the SNES.

my favorite version of MKII OST. Far better than SNES, Arcade and even the CD version, IMHO.

Kinda abstract sound. Fits very well with the Red/Black sky of the tomb. reminds me the end of Mark Bowen by Faith No More.

better than snes i think, its alot darker
snes is better (in some ways) its closer to the arcade version and yes, played all the 2 versions back to back but the mega drive 1. no real voice acting "fatality" or the players names. snes version they screem if it really is hurding them. the mega drive? "oh!" only that. but all in all? the pc version beats the super nes and mega drive fully.

los sonidos, las canciones de esta version tiene una atmosfera mas oscura, mas terrorifica, encima las canciones encajan muy bien para cada escenario, es genial! los soundtracks de otras versiones de este mismo juego no me gustan. creo que de todos los MK este es el mejor ambientado, que mejores escenarios tiene, luchadores y que mas representa a la saga, el Ultimate es el unico que le hace pelea mano a mano. todos los demas sacando el 1. son una cagada!

La música de snes para el mk2 es débil, no tiene el impacto que merece en la ambientación del juego debido a que los programadores hicieron una copia de menor calidad de la música del arcade, parece sonido midi. La versión de sega es practicamente música nueva que aprovecha el potencial de la consola, no busca imitar al arcade sino tener estilo propio, una obra notable de Matt Furniss, por eso tiene mejor percusión, suena mas potente y resulta mas sombría, es música única. Tengo tanto la sega genesis como la snes, la comparación de sonido dá ventaja a snes en el tema de las voces digitalizadas fundamentalmente, pero la música de fondo no es buena, tal vez por esto los programadores hicieron que los efectos de sonido se escuchen bastante mas por encima del nivel de la mísica, posiblemente con la intensión de que quede ''disimulada'' por los ruidos propios de los efectos del juego. Eso se nota mucho, no me he fijado en el emulador de snes, pero en la consola real en un tv de tubo se nota así.
@Takashi Mike La calidad de ciertas canciones SNES no las lograba por su sintetizador sino porque comprimía muestras de audio real que las utilizaba para crear la música, era como con el tema de las muestras de voces digitalizadas comprimidas. El sistema de sega era el que siempre usaba el sintetizador para crear la música desde cero, no usaba muestras de sonidos. Sega no comprimía in situ las muestras de sonido, tenía que comprimirlas por fuera antes de incorporarlas al cartucho y esto le quitaba calidad, como hoy se hace con el mp3, esa es la diferencia mas notable con la snes.
Pero mas allá de esto te lo digo por experiencia: en el snes la música del mk2 y también la del mk1 es una música que copia al arcade con calidad mala, las melodías son parecidas, pero los instrumentos suenan radicalmente diferentes. Sega en lugar de transitar ese camino decidió hacer música diferente, que para los 16 bits suena notablemente mas llamativa que la de snes.
@Takashi Mike Reitero, hay notable diferencia en la musicalización entre snes y genesis, tanto en m1 como en mk2, tengo ambas consolas, las hago funcionar en un tv analógico, la música de sega es mas clara, mas nítida, mas potente en unas melodías, mas lúgubre en otras, la música de snes es monótona, le falta vida y eso no es responsabilidad 100% de los músicos que adaptaron el sonido para la snes sino que viene de arrastre del arcade, todas las composiciones del arcade son mejorables en cuanto a melodías, se las pudo haber trabajado mejor. Hasta en la percusión gana el genesis, y eso no es un tema de hardware sino que es responsabilidad de los músicos.

@@elalexander25 de lo que dices estoy de acuerdo con gran parte de lo que dices, eso de que chip es mejor solo son números, porque en la práctica cada chip tiene sus ventajas y desventajas.Igual como cada chip tiene su punto fuerte en cada tipo de música.¡Un saludo!

Might be using lower quality instruments but man Tomb (Air Kombat) is way better arranged here than the other soundtracks.
I still have the genesis cart of this game with my Genesis 3 and a few other physical carts. First time I played this was back in the mid 90's

I was 6 or 7 old enough to play and understand the mechanics but not the actual moves Orr fatalities the older kids in my apts knew the fatalities and I always lost my mind when they would pull them off 😭 this game changed it all for me imagination wise 👹🔥✨
