    Which situations in this video had the highest risk if they went wrong? And which were the closest to nearly going wrong? Other than simply not bringing a wetsuit
    Trying to learn how to identify dangerous scenarios. Twice now (I'm new) I've retrospectively realized how dangerous some of my actions have been that I didn't recognize in the moment.

      The highest risk here was medical issues derived from the hypothermia induced by not having a wetsuit. We were starting to lose motor function from being very cold which leads to safety issues as well as our cognitive functions were slowing down due to the hypothermia.

    I don't usually watch this kinds of videos but I ended up watching till the end.

    Just came across this. Reminds me of my trip through illusions in AZ. Not enough wetsuit makes for a rough day 🥶😅

    Been there. Appreciate this. Hard to describe.

      Very hard to describe for sure. Hoping this helps others that may get themselves into rough situations, not only in a slot canyon, but outdoors in general.

    This is a great example of how even very experienced people can get into trouble and is a good cautionary tale. I've heard of few a few cases of people succumbing to hypothermia in wet canyons. A couple of thoughts and observations (I don't mean to be critical here, but hopefully these can be helpful): whenever I get to a tricky up-climb, I almost always toss up my pack or hand it someone else even if I think I can do it. (Just make sure you don't toss it to a place that you can't get to it or attach a sling!) This makes the moves much easier and saves energy and just might speed things up. When your friend was trying to help you out with the rope, there was another rope that could have been added. Grabbing and pulling on two ropes should be easier. Also, the next time I rappel into deep a deep pool, I think I will unlock my 'biner right before going into the water to speed up getting out of the rappel. (Imagine if the gate was stuck or your hands got too cold to unscrew it!) Thanks for sharing this. Being honest and humble are good leadership qualities in my book!

      Your welcome. I hope it helps someone out there with their decision making situations in a canyon.

      Me Too :) It was never a question of making it out on this one, it was just a matter of how we were gonna make it out. Being cold can cause issues and effect your cognitive thinking. We were getting delirious and confused towards the end and it was compromising safety. We just had to keep our focus and think through the processes more closely and make sure we were being safe. Being cold sucked, sucked bad and we were hurting. But not making it out was never an option. We thought about pushing the button on our emergency beacon a couple of times.

    Thanks for posting. This is a perfect demonstration of how a lack of preparedness and experience can quickly lead to compounding problems. Very glad that you didn't become a statistic.

      +Camp RocketSound Thanks for watching. Hope it helps others realize that all the good times they watch on social media can only happen with proper preparation, planning and training. I get worried that if all we ever post is the good stuff, we leave the impression that all this stuff is easy to do with little understanding of proper techniques.

    Thanks sharing. Do you keep anything to get your warm again in a canyon safety kit? My wife keeps a few "hot hands" in hers, and I keep a fire starter and a space blanket. Although we hope to never need them, they could potentially help.

      Your welcome, Thanks for watching. I hope it helps someone sometime with decision making in a canyon. I periodically do carry some hot hands. My kit is broken up into different modules and I believe the one containing the hot hands were left out on this trip. I did have fire starting options if needed, but trying to find anything to burn in the slot sections is always hard. Once out where it opened up that would have been easy. As long as we were moving we were creating just enough heat to keep us functioning. It was when we stopped at the rappels, or down climbs etc. that we started getting chilled again. We figured as long as we could just keep moving, no matter how delirious we were getting, we'd make it out. I did do a video on my back country emergency kit earlier this year if you haven't seen that one yet: th-cam.com/video/tlwg15AlBwM/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks for sharing! That rope pull is a bear.I am sure it is more difficult when you are cold and tired.

    • @NorthWashOutdoors
      @NorthWashOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it’s a sucky pull to begin with. In our state it was all we could do to get it down. Luckily I managed the anchor and the rope as best as possible and eliminated a lot of cussing by doing so.

    Glad you guys came put of the situation at least after a bit safe and healthy! It seems it can be very scary stuff if someone does not know what they are doing. Have an amazing blessed one!

      Thanks for the watch and comment Stephen. Yeah, Canyoneering can very often times go just fine without any concern, complaint or issue. But on the occasion where something wrong does happen, you have to fall back on your training and skill and sometimes will power and work through those situations. A good solid group helps. Had I been leading a group of beginners through I don't think they would have handled it as well as the group we were with did. It's fun to be out in the canyons and I look forward to the next one (Hmmm, on Friday :) ).

    What thickness wetsuit were you wearing? Thanks for sharing.

    • @NorthWashOutdoors
      @NorthWashOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those that had wetsuits were in about a 4/3mm suit. Jeff and I failed to adequately prepare. I was in a 1.5mm set up. Jeff had no neoprene on.

    Did this one in April solo (not recommended), got my ropes caught for half an hour at the main rap, everything got wet and weighed so much more, the climb out was tough!!

    • @NorthWashOutdoors
      @NorthWashOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch! That’d be a tough one to do solo. Glad you made it out too. Our trip was mid April this year. It was cold and miserable (obviously). When we got to that main rap there was a rope that was left behind (the yellow rope we set up as our pull cord on that rap) we cleaned it and carried it out. Looks like that drop has given others a bit of trouble.

  • @Mpo65
    @Mpo65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, nice team work and good video! And some body in the comments said he did this solo? Really?

    • @NorthWashOutdoors
      @NorthWashOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a really great core group of canyoneers that we go out with. Each one is solid and reliable. Yeah.... I'm not much for the solo thing.

    Can't figure out why you would go into a canyon with cold water pools and not take a wetsuit.

    • @NorthWashOutdoors
      @NorthWashOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We weren't expecting very much water, it had been a dry spring. We were wrong.
