Just went through the same process - so this video is going to be very helpful for new owners of the VCS. I also prefer Raspberry Pi Imager, even for non-Raspberry Pi devices like you are using in this video!
Thanks for the updated setup instructions. I was waiting for it to hit $100 and finally ordered one on black friday (assuming it ever shows up...). Its going to be my primary TV/emulation/steam box. Been wanting to get away from PIs and Android and move to something windows based. The aesthetic is just much nicer than more powerful mini pcs.
But seriously... this version of "Atari" really is missing the mark in customer service and common sense. Unbelievable you have to do this much for it to just work. Add to that its been 2 weeks and I still don't know when mine is arriving-- it just leaves a bad taste.
Very welcome, after I bought my unit (early Nov.) I saw some really great deals for around $100, so thought I'd try to help out some of the new owners if they run into the same issues I did. Agree on the aesthetic aspect, it's a nicely designed machine.
Great little system. It was expensive when it came out. Thanks for the fix update and the awesome review Jon! Great video! Merry Christmas to you and your family !
It is a nice little system and the price was a bit higher than my budget would allow (at the time). With the price less than half of the initial launch, it was a worthwhile pickup here. Thank you so much for watching Mike, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas too!
Glad to see you helping new owners Jon. I did the same last year when I picked mine up, these are basically new old stock at this point so I hope the batteries hold up on the controllers, once this bad boy is running its a pretty decent kit.
Thank you for watching CarlO! Yeah, if the setup had gone smoothly I might not have completed this video but after having some difficulties thought others may find it helpful. It's a decent machine, I've yet to purchase any additional games for it but may do that over the holidays. I figured they are likely clearing exiting inventory.
Very timely video. I picked up a VCS recently since they were so heavily discounted but of course ran into the update issue. I'll definitely be taking advantage of the update link you shared to get my machine up and running. Thanks Jon!
I received mine a few days ago, through Walmart sale ordered onyx, but received walnut which i was thrilled to get. Plan to add more ram and a m.2 drive for more options. Great price finally got me to bite. Look forward to your Windows option video if you decide to make it. I have pc image to try the Linux OS prior to any hardware upgrades. If you can't find pc image try internet archive
Thank you for watching Frank, glad you got the model you wanted! Same here, if it wasn't for the great price I likely wouldn't have picked one up but glad I did - It's a nice little machine. I've had a few asking about the Windows video, so may do that.
The joystick (classic controller) has a button I didn't know existed until almost two years later. If you push down on the top of the stick, that is a button too.
I got mine last year on a fathers day sale. Price was low enough for me to drop the cash. Nice little system, had an issue with the modern controller where the triggers wouldn't register. That said they were great at getting an rma for a new one. Only purchased the new haunted house game so far. I think i enjoy the versatility of the system more than anything, great for those who like to tinker and play with sbc's, for the right price its a no brainer and it looks great too! Now if I can only get one of those atari arcade sticks they had at microcenter without destroying my wallet on ebay, I'd be set for a while lol.
A video about setting up PC Mode? YES, PLEASE! It would be _awesome_ if you might please show how to install on OS and/or partition the internal drive! If nothing else, as a request from a fellow Wagner? 😅
PS - Ironically, the OG Missile Command for the Atari 400/800, on the yellow-on-black cartridge, had full-featured, momentum-sensing “Trak-Ball” support (at least Atari’s own models, named that, when switched to track ball mode, I can report from personal experience in the 1980s... 🍻!)
Thank you for letting me know your interest in seeing a video on how to install an OS for use on the VCS. What OS would you be most interested in seeing shown?
Please make a video on how to set up pc mode. I wonder if any updates broke it. I've tried to do what has worked for others and more with no success. Ironically the vcs didnt give me much trouble when i first powered it up and let me set up an account after updating itself.
Very interesting, how long have you had your VCS? Just wondering if you've had it awhile and it's only new machines that need a manual firmware update to work. I only have this one machine to test, your answer would be much appreciated and also thank you for replying with your request on PC Mode setup.

Awesome, I'm glad to be able to help with the update!
Thanks for the help with the set up. I look forward to other videos showing how to install a different OS. I saw that Bazzite is possible.

Awesome I am pulling mine out of the closet tonight!

Hey thank you for letting me know! I didn't see that listed in their on-screen layout, but perhaps I missed it.
Ah, in the tank clip... The days of curving a round because the motion was tied to the position of the front of the tank.
Had so much fun playing Combat against my sister. That was ages ago.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with the VCS! Would you recommend the new haunted house game? I'm looking for recommended games to try out.
Had that problem with the triggers in Windows but figured out I was supposed to be switching to Xbox mode in PC mode lol.

@@WagnersTechTalk I have only had my vcs for less then 2 weeks. I purchased it from Atari's website during their recent sale.
Maybe it's Chinese or Korean. Sum Ting Wen Wong...
