The fact that Godzilla scared the Japanese away from the marine park is doubly funny when you know Godzilla is a metaphor for the effects of nuclear devastation on Japan, which is the whole reason they took up their crusade against the whale and dolphin in the first place. So it’s not just a scary monster, it’s the personification of everything they’re fighting to avenge reminding them of the horror they’re not able to overcome. It’s a surprisingly deep joke if you think about it. 😂
The stinky butter sounds stupid but they actually did that in the show. Its a special mixture that ruins the whale meat as soon as it comes in contact with it. It was very effective because it made the fishing operation a total financial loss. I think the stuff in those butter bombs was so bad they had to chemically clean the entire ship before they could hunt whales again.
It's a typical Matt and Trey joke - see something that sounds stupid on the surface and then make fun of it, but if you dig into it even just a little bit you see that it's not as stupid as it sounds. So the jokes are funny until you find out that they're making fun of something they just don't understand well enough to satirize, but when you know better it just comes off as lazy, stupid writing. I love South Park, but my biggest issue with Matt and Trey is that they almost never take the time to try to understand the things they mock - they're not stupid, just incredibly incurious - and it ruins a lot of the jokes.

For context, this episode came out after the documentary “The Cove” was released, which shows the practice of dolphin hunting that persists in a few areas of Japan. It was pretty brutal, and the water literally turning blood red is a reference to that. As South Park has evolved over the years I think a lot of people forget that it was originally a straight forward satire told through the eyes of little kids, who may not have understood the complexities of the issues, but were able to see through all the BS we accept as normal. I hadn’t seen this episode in years, but it’s definitely better than I remembered (South Park is a lot smarter than most people realize). Not only is it poking fun at reality TV and bleeding heart liberals who posture towards hardline ethical stances but aren’t willing to do anything if it actually hurts them, but also to how a documentary everyone was talking about for a few months was just completely erased from the public consciousness - despite the actual issue still being a problem. And then there’s Japan deflecting blame for Hiroshima onto whales and dolphins, when in reality it’s a practice going back centuries, but no longer aligns with “our Western values”, as Japan is a great example of a country that should be completely at odds with the US after being nuked, but very quickly became one of America’s best allies. Scapegoating the whales and dolphins is fascistic, but is also an indictment of the US, who in this imagined scenario orchestrated that hatred (which is something we do in reality all the time). The portrayal of the Japanese does come off as pretty racist, but it’s intentionally over the top in order to make fun of how people in the West were responding to “The Cove”. The twist at the end where they turn it towards chicken and cows is kind of weak in my opinion, but it does turn the hypocrisy back on us, who have no problem with a culture based on factory farming, but feign outrage at people in Japan killing whales and dolphins. I also completely forgot The Smashing Pumpkins were in this episode. However good Carman doing Poker Face was, you guys were immediately into SP (their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, is a beast).
The outrage is over hunting a number of species who are endangered. In no way does that make the acceptance of factory farming hypocritical. That's a massive false equivelancy. Aside from involving a potential source of food, the two scenarios are practically a world apart. If whales weren't perceived as on the brink of extinction, barely anyone would've cared. If they had a population size on par with other major food animals, then most people would accept it as easily as they accept factory farming. They don't, though. Their population is so low for some species that they're basically genetically doomed even if everyone were to stop hunting them today, so yeah, you're kind of an asshole if you actively hunt them down. You're not an asshole for eating one out of ten trillion chickens. If that was their intent, then I'm forced to question if Matt and Trey are as intelligent as people think.

There's a documentary about whale and dolphin hunting called The Cove, it goes into the killings of these animals committed by the Japanese. The depiction in this episode is both accurate and hilarious.
The fish caught in the nets can capsize the boat if they all start swimming down at once. Generally though the captain will cut the net loose if that happens.
Recently dolphins reputation has taken a hit, but at the end of the day they are still primarily friendly and have positive interactions with people. That said, the biggest thing is they are intelligent, and intelligent creatures get bored. And when intelligent predators get bored, they tend to take out their boredom on smaller creatures. You see the same thing with otters, monkeys, dogs, and cats, and of course People.

The fish caught in the nets can capsize the boat if they all start swimming down at once. Generally though the captain will cut the net loose if that happens.
Being unalived is the least of your worries with dolphins. It’s not even captivity they do way worse in the wild tbh
I wanna see the Rockband story that is essentially the same one as when they played "Guitar Hero" only maybe it's a two parter.
8:37 When they rushed the Miami Dolphins players I spit out my water 😂
Recently dolphins reputation has taken a hit, but at the end of the day they are still primarily friendly and have positive interactions with people. That said, the biggest thing is they are intelligent, and intelligent creatures get bored. And when intelligent predators get bored, they tend to take out their boredom on smaller creatures. You see the same thing with otters, monkeys, dogs, and cats, and of course People.
3:30 idk if they explain it in the episode, but there's this documentary called The Cove that can put this into context. You don't have to watch it (it's pretty grusome) but maybe read a synopsis.
Cartman singing Poker Face is peak 😂😂😂
“Part of your lore” is crazy

"so what do we do.... Oh I have an idea! why dont we sue UMG for allowing the release of Not Like Us? then everyone will totally think we're badass"

The Walmart episode is good too. It's just funny how they make fun of the reality shows in this one.
This came out when that documentary The Cove was on netflix.
Need a "welcome back guys...." *wait* "hope you're having a shit Christmas!" on Christmas day.
the Stan spiritual predecessor to this episode is probably s6e4 Fun With Veal.
35:10 If you want to save an endangered species eat it.
14:19 “The world is a vampire” 🗣️🗣️🗣️
The harmonica song kills me 😂
Its real thing in japan there is fishing village that herds and kills dolphins every year, the idea that the dolphins some how mess up their fishing harvests so they lure them into the shallows then kill them, But they also one the few countries who still do whaling as profession
The fact that they showed the guys face 😂😂😂😂
Nah but I remember watching that show
They really did nothing and tried to act like they were warriors 😂
Dolphins will play with you before drowning you. 😂😂😂
10:35 , just so y’all know this is a real cover Trey Parker worked on for this episode. You can buy the full version of it, lol
The leader of the Whale Wars show, Paul Watson actually liked this episode because it pissed off IRL Japanese whalers and the Japanese Prime Minister.
Eyy i asked for this one, on another pole sometime ago!!!🎉🎉😮
It’s crazy when you think about it…this episode does so many crazy graphic things yet they censored the text of the Song Pokerface😂
