When I was in my 20s I never took my jacket off because all my shirts were super baggy. I came from a small town with 1 store that sold dress shirts and I was a really tall, really thin man. Now I'm in my 30s and all my clothes are tailored and I've filled out so I can wear off the rack well too. I made every suit mistake as a young man: Black Suits, Oversized, bad shirt colors, vegan shoes, Loose ties with no dimple, over matching pocket squares, too many accessories and disorderly hair/facial hair, but you gotta start somewhere.

@@caesarortega5249 funny you mention "rompers"... I happen to own a couple vintage "shirt garters", they look an awful lot like those elastic bedsheet stays with the clips on them... And work the same damn way.
And it turns out that Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin allegedly used to have their Formal shirts custom made with extra long tails that buttoned between their legs, I suppose fitting quite similarly to a Romper... The story goes that they did this so their shirts would never ride up on them while performing.

Unfortunately, I'm short but stocky, so size Medium (UK size) has the perfect room to fit into, but the sleeve cuffs I have to roll back and button up; if I go to a size S, the sleeves come to my wrists; they are way too tight around my stomach and chest 😩

For oddly sized individuals, buying a dress shirt can be nearly impossible. For decades, my shirts were always too large in the neck, too large in the shoulders, too short in the sleeves, and too baggy in the torso. At that time, I couldn't afford bespoke, so I just ended up looking sloppy (since a tailor can't fix all of those mistakes).
With they explosion of online shopping options, I finally found one brand that fits me well. Now I buy all of my shirts (except t-shirts) from that brand.

    Great vid Antonio!
After looking at your head another person’s peripheral vision will see your torso.
That needs to be put together right.
Wearing a jacket can camouflage sins in the shirt department but as soon as you take it off, its time in the shirting confessional.
Pants, belts, shoes, watches, while no less important to your overall look, will be secondary as they are usually out of periphery.
Rarely is someone looking down your body up close.
That being said, a trained eye will notice these details when approaching you from distance.

Fit is key, but something most guys overlook is the type of collar that's on the shirt.
For instance, those extreme cutaway spread collars have NO BUSINESS on men that have thick necks, or are shorter in stature... That style only accentuates those features.
The same goes for longer point collars on extremely tall or thin guys...
Try on a few different styles and see what suits YOUR build.,a
Fit around the cuff is important, as you mention.
As far as off the rack shirts that are too baggy in the body, they can be taken to just about any Seamstress and "darted" for a more flattering fit. That should only cost somewhere in the $15-$25 dollar range per shirt.
Something else I've learned over the years... It's a MUCH BETTER investment to buy a more expensive shirt than to buy two or three cheap shirts... Heavier, 100% cotton will outlast any poly or poly blend shirt by at least 3 years AND be more comfortable, too.
    Cheers!

I take a fairly odd size shirt. It took me a long time to figure out exactly what I needed. My neck was too big and my arms were too short. I would have to upsize my shirt to get the neck to fit, but then the body, and arm fit we're terrible. I finally figured out that if I buy a Calvin Klein slim fit it is as close to a great fit as I can get. The arms fit well and the body fit is decent although a little bit of darting makes them look great.

@@mph7282 I was talking about all type of shirts... which includes casual and formal... and is there any rule saying formal shirts cant be rolled?? Its a personal choice... dress shirt is about what type of shirt you are wearing... not how you are wearing... you shouldn't roll up during any formal events or occasion... but you could do it if you are hanging out before or after that event... formal shirt are designed for flexibility... not for restriction... even obama folds his dress shirt when he is giving a formal speech in public... now don't say, he don't know how to wear a dress shirt

    • @mph7282
      @mph7282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@arun_kumar0 You can wear whatever you like. But you answered your own question in saying a dress shirt is a specific type of shirt, which means it will fit a certain way. Wearing it in a way other than that for which it was designed, which agreed is completely your perogative, means it may not fit exactly the way you want. And no, formal shirts are not designed for flexibility, they are designed specifically for their formality.
That said, you can have sleeves tailored, though when it comes to diameter that usually means making them smaller, not larger, as there is typically not much material available to increase the size. You can, of course, have shirts custom made as well, and these days that is not particularly more difficult or expensive than buying one off the rack.

At my separation seminar when I retired from the Navy, one of the briefs was how to dress for success and they covered most of the topics here in this video.
Also, when I was in the Navy, we all found out about how to tuck-in your shirt and to use shirt-stays to keep them tucked in all day long, I still use shirt stays with civilian clothes because I hate the sloppy look of a partial/half-assed tucked-in shirt. The military side tuck works perfectly for civilian situations but I always used the USMC back tuck with the military creases in the shirts.
OMG I hate those Untuck-It shirt commercials for men, to me they're simply blouses for men but I don't know any real men who would wear a blouse. Personally, an untucked shirt is just sloppy unless you're in your backyard grilling or something like that, but if you're out in public, take some pride and look like a man and not a little boy. Don't get me started with men in public wearing short pants unless they're at an Oktoberfest wearing lederhosen; backyard BBQs and such is fine but please act, dress, and look like an adult out in public.
A lot of casual shirts have sleeves that droop past the shoulder and is probably why some men don't know how to buy the correct dress shirt because they simply look at their casual shirt as a reference.
I've definitely seen a lot of people putting stress tests like the Hulk on buttons by wearing those too small.
If the collar is too tight, you can buy a button with an elastic loop from most men's clothing stores so you can keep using those shirts until you lose the weight or buy new shirts, that way you don't have to fear Darth Vader Force-choking you all day long.
The way my dad would test a shirt (coats & jackets also) if the sleeves were long enough by giving himself a bearhug and if was tight anywhere, he would size up until he was comfortable.
At my Dress for Success brief they recommended same shirt length you did plus making sure the suit coat sleeve is short enough for at least 1/4-inch of shirt sleeve to be exposed. Since that brief I've noticed a lot of men on TV who have suit coats too long down to their knuckles or too short about half their shirt cuff exposed. They also recommended if you wear French cuffs or button-studs to make sure the stud is clearly visible so this will be about 1-inch of shirt cuff showing sometimes and therefore shorter suit coat sleeves.
Great video Antonio & Thomas. 👍

There are many different ways a dress shirt can fit properly. I prefer very slim fitting shirts with a bit of room on the stomach for when you lean over or sit down. However there are some fabrics like silk or linen that look better with a drape when tucked in so those shirts can be much roomier. Polo shirts and t shirts should fit tight around the chest, arms/pits, and should taper down giving a triangular shape while opening up with enough room to not be baggy or throw off the triangular shape. In todays fashions every button is supposed to be buttoned even when worn casually. I personally hate this look. Especially on polos. A little bit of chest and chest hair should be showing. Not very much. But just enough. Honestly looks so much nicer than buttoning every button.
