  • Brazil guitar sensation Fabio Zanon exploded on the international scene in 1996 when he won the first prize at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, just weeks after having won the first prize at the 30th Francisco Tarrega International Competition... the most prestigious guitar contest in Europe. This was an unprecedented achievement in the guitar world. After giving his first solo concert performance at the age of 16, Fabio Zanon continued to perform extensively in Great Britian, South America, Iberia, Italy, and the United States.
    On this, the solo performance recording, Mr. Zanon plays guitar compositions spanning three centuries. An incredibly colorful and virtuistic display of guitar techniques, moods, and temperaments is captured on this film. Compositions performed include: Sonata in A Minor by J.S. Bach (Grave, Fugue, Andante, Allegro); Johann Caspar Mertz opern - Revue Op. 8, No. 3 Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti; Old Song by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez; Appassionata by Ronaldo Miranda; Sonata 11, 144, and 391 by Dominico Scarlatti; and the extremely difficult yet striking 20th Century musical essay on death by Alexandre de Faria entitled Prelude for Guitar (Eyes of a Recollection).

    • @dbachito
      @dbachito 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Özgün Demir Have you heard an interpretation of any of Scarlatti's sonatas played at the harpsichord? It is the nature of the instrument and the style of the music. Some players prefer to be faithful to this tradition by playing the music as it would have sounded at the time, sometimes trying to "mimic" the original instrument. By the way, do you find the sonata 144 found in the second part of the video as mechanical as the first?

    • @allan2098
      @allan2098 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dbachito As you state, it is an interpretation of this music and some people like it played like a harpsichord but the guitar lends itself to a more subtle expression. Although Scarlatti wrote for the harpsichord his music sits beautifully on the guitar and I agree with Ozgun that a more romantic interpretation is nice for these pieces. On a lighter note I love the Bread and baker quote...

    In 1998 I was working in Dallas and on a day off I went to the Dallas Museum of Art. A sign said a classical guitar concert was taking place in half an hour so I bought a ticket. It was Fabio Zanon - he was incredible. I still have the set list he performed which he signed for me. Scarlatti's compositions really stand out for me with often surprising leaps and tensions which grab your attention. I played one of his sonatas for my grade 8 classical guitar K322.

    Oh, those ornaments!
    I play this much more slowly and sentimentally. One could consider my interpretation as romanticised. Mr. Zanon's performance here is full of energy; I rather disagree that it sounds mechanical. He leaves plenty of room for variation between repeats and there are breathing spaces. However the best thing for me, as I wrote above, is the presentation of those magnificent harpsichord-like ornaments!

    It sounds like a harpsichord at times - intentionally? A brilliant perormance, none o the sentimentality that seems to cloud many modern realizations o Baroque music.

      @Gigablue Mutante Monstro This is how it is supposed to sound. The ringing, clear tones bring out all the harmonic and contrapuntal subtleties i don't like when people try to add softer touches that were never intended by the composer simply because the classical guitar has a natural softer tone than the harpsichord.

  • @TalentedDilittante

    Once over the aggressive attack in the first few bars of the first piece, Mr. Zanon becomes everything anybody could wish for in a guitarist . . . disciplined, romantic, freely emotional and artistically sensitive to the direction of the music.

    this guy is really cool and well rounded. he has strong fingering and rhythm which could be interpreted as mechanical. He also has good tone dynamics and can play subtlety with confidence.

      Berlioz composed ALL his orchestral music on the guitar. Only the piano, with its broader vocal range can match the Guitar's melodic and harmonic richness. However, the guitar has a more colorful voice, capable of colors and timbres beyond the pianoforte. FOR HARMONIC STRUCTURE, BERLIOZ CHOSE WELL.

    I like and dislike at the same time the lack of added reverb. It is a very pure sound, a sound people who play classical guitar are familiar with. At the same time, it sounds a little bit dry.

    It`s not "mechanic", he just seems to try to imitate the sound of harpsichord on the first part, but he uses a wide range of dynamics -such an interesting approach.
