  • When I was new to off-roading I ran beat up shocks for so long, I didn't know a good ride was even possible. Even worse, my shocks were so short they limited my down-travel so I could barely flex. Shocks are important people! Here's how I figure out what shocks to order for my trucks!

    You should measure collapsed length, with the bump stop sitting on the frame. You can compare but method by experience most of the time, bumper compressed on frame are the lowest measurement of the two method and then the right one. I personally use a ratchet strap and compress the bump stop on the frame.

    Great video as always, I ordered the shocks that you suggested to me, and they work flawlessly on the trail. Cheers!

      You should've ordered shocks that were 4"-62". That would've been perfect for your application. 👌🏻

    The easiest way to measure extended length is to put the jack on frame. The proposed method is good but , you can compare both method and use higher measurement

    Please weld those towers along the top of the frame/stiffener plate. Will keep them from pulling outward. Or being pushed inward.

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are welded to 1/4" frame plates that are welded to the frame. I think they're gonna hold. If they don't, I'll mention you in a video and say you were right! Haha

    • @braapvideos6937
      @braapvideos6937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fortune and Death yeah they seem to peel off regardless I see it a lot working at trail tough. Welding them across the top always does the trick

      Next time I have it in the garage I will do so! Hitting the trail tomorrow, hopefully they don't wreak havoc. 🤙🏻

      Fortune and Death should be okay for now. It’s just the pushing and pulling over time starts to weaken everything

    Cool video. Should you reinforce the frame first then weld on the new shock tower? Like a fishplate for a rock slider is what I mean.

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a frame plate welded on too, but I should probably add more to the shock tower.

    ON that paper where you have it written that the rear axle changed from 18-21 inches. is that correct or did you write that down wrong? that seems like way to small of a change.

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because the shock mounting is inboarded. They are at almost a 45* angle. Because of that the shocks don't need a lot of range. 👍🏻

      @@FortuneOffRoad ok cool, i just mounted some shocks on the back of my samurai, that can extend about 5 inches and compress about 4.5". I have no way to safely flex the suspension to take measurements so I just mounted them about half way through the travel. mine are at about 30 degree angle. I think I will be good. they are stock 81 chevy truck shocks and go from 23 1/4" to 13 3/4", and they seem to fit just right on a samurai that is lifted about 6-8" lol. thanks for making this video

      Yeah, that was a work mustache competition (in which I lost bigtime) and evolved into a quarantine stache that I said I would keep until the SIP was lifted. Good riddance!

    Is the lift just a spring over and 1.5 in shackle lift?

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, exactly! It's about 4.5" from the SPOA and and another 1/2" or so from the shackles 🤙🏻

  • @troyreed6502
    @troyreed6502 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I recently bought the same dr z shackles that you have 1.5 inch front and rear, now my 2inch lift arb shocks are too short, i want to keep my stock shock towers and bilstein doesnt make any, they do however sell a whole load of skyjacker shocks that directly bolt on, would you reccomend them?

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I would take them off, flex it out and measure. Then you could get the exact size shocks you need. If you get missing link shackles its going to throw everything off. 🤙🏻

    how tall is the tower? Can you give me the height from the bottom to the part where the shock is attached and from the bottom of the letter R to where the shock is attached

    I've researched shocks and wound at the ones you've suggested here many times. I haven't pulled the trigger because my tin top is mainly a daily driver. Do you have any experience with your front set up, at the softer rate of the two available, on the road? If so, would you still suggest the softer rate?

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I would still go with these ones. Any higher valving would be too much for the little Samurai. 🤙🏻

    As far as the loop where the bolts go on the shocks, do I have to specify the size of the loop when I order? I have my shocks measured already. But the top bolt is a different size than the bottom. Oh and great vids by the way.

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some shocks come with different sized bushings at the eyes. Only my top mount on the shock hook required a metal insert for the bushing. The bottom mount did not use the metal insert, the rubber bushing went directly on the stud. As far as I know the eyes of the shock should be universal. DM me on Instagram if you have any more questions. 🤙🏻

      I believe most shock eyes are 5/8 and you would use sleeves for a 1/2 inch or 12mm application.
