Jonny Greenwood’s piece ‘Alma’ used in this scene is seriously one of the best pieces of musical score of the century so far. Everything about this scene is perfect.
Great scene, but… Could you explain what exactly turns Alma from having the time of her life at the party to suddenly becoming almost fearful? Is it that Big Dog? Other folks kept on partying, so it wasn’t a mass panic. And I see no evidence that she saw Reynolds up in the balcony, so why the sudden change in her mood?
How did Vicky Krieps not (at least!) get an Oscar nomination? Goes toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis for 2+ hours...And nothing? Ridiculous. I know the Academy Awards are largely a popularity contest, but she's phenomenal in this film.
Yeah, especially crazy as the film got lots of attention in other categories (Manville should have won Supporting Actress probably), a real shame she was overlooked
@@jon8004 I disagree! You either get it the first time or you don't! You talked yourself in to seeing it again because of outside noise that influence you.
This scene is heartbreaking. All elements (especially the score) illustrate so well how it feels to need someone, and how pathetic and heartbroken you can feel when you don't have them
Woodcock when he looks out at the crowd yearns to be like them, free, happy, lighthearted, but he can't fit in, he's a prisoner, and he copes with it via his obsession with his art.
This is a beautiful movie that I can't watch more than once a year, if that. But I can and will listen to the soundtrack on repeat. God bless this film!
This is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen, the clothes, the cinematography, the textures, the sets, the colors … everything in this film managed to transport me to the time when it takes place and I will always be grateful for it.
There is something almost hallucinatory about how Anderson films the Dance. There are the strange animal heads worn by some of the party goers, for example. They bring to mind Lancaster Dodd's line about 'man is not an animal' from The Master to me.
I watched this for the first time last night. There will be blood has been one of my favorite movies for a long time, but I have just recently started to dive into the rest of his films. I have seen Boogie Nights, The Master and Magnolia as well. Up to this point in the film I was enjoying it, but probably would have placed 4th or perhaps even 5th on the list. This scene changed all of the that. I cried my eyes out both at the shot where he is standing alone looking out on the party with the couple kissing right next to him, as well as the part where it looks like he almost asks Alma to dance, but then holds back and they walk out. Absolutely incredible scene. Still gotta put There Will Be Blood first but I think this scene moved this movie into second for me.
This is painful for me to watch because I see a lot of myself in Reynolds. He technically DOESN'T need her, but he DOES need her emotionally, but he doesn't have the emotional language and capacity and humility to express it. Excruciating stuff when you see your own toxic trait laid bare like this.
This was Da-Lewis's last film. It wasn't planned to be. It's suspected Phantom Thread hastened his departure because he saw a lot of himself in Reynolds.
Poignant to hear your perspective. It felt like a love letter to women with ASD partners. I recognized their courtship & many of my spouse’s traits. It can’t be explained, only lived.
@@cinemagraphymahivara2000 I think you did not read well, I said that his cinema is not appreciated in Latin America Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, etc.
Yeah in most of Latam distribution is shit, 99% of the movies in theatre are american and not mid-budget almost indie prods like PTA. If they screen an indie film in most mexican theaters they would screen it once or twice a week, mostly mondays at 10pm to give more space to more popular stuff.
what an astoundingly beautiful scene. crazy that IMO this is PTA's second-best movie (for me) and like...There Will Be Blood is #4. which would be a career-defining masterpiece for most anyone

I love cinema but I’m tired of stories about romance and finding love. Gag. Marriage Story was the last and best relationship movie I care to see. I want to see movies about the opposite of romance, if that makes any sense. Something about rejecting personal connections.
probably because thats a bad philosophy, literally the whole movie is about this. But I would check out wong kar wai and his movies such as in the mood for love and fallen angels which don't have a very rosey view on romance (he still suggests its important but its messy)
