I was in a car accident two months ago and had a severe brain injury. My right hand is now totally numb and it's almost like I'm having to relearn how to play guitar. The part of your video about learning to play with physical limitations was super motivating!! So thank you!
This video is surprisingly relatable and informative. I use the word surprisingly here because I was expecting the topic to be discussed in a more esoteric manner, as it most often is. Once again, high quality content, Samurai, I applaud your work ethic.
in the wise words of Willie Nelson when talking about Django Reinhardt, "the reason the rest of us can't play like him is because we have too many fingers!" lol

This is my favorite video of yours yet Samurai. I appreciate the truthful insights and how clearly you offer them. Excellent youtubers offer excellent equipment for us to learn and explore potential better. In an age of mass communication all these teachers compile so we, who learn from these influences, form them into something of one super-teacher. I must say this is a dangerous fact and so we must let Christ be the head of All including this super-teacher we each form for ourselves. I am now 35 years old and I am learning like I should've been learning at 13. When Samurai says things like "If there are issues like these they should probably be dealt with" take it to heart and act because the rewards are huge and easy. Easy in that learning this stuff from good youtubers is very fun, so you can just calmly enjoy slowly learning, and you will find suddenly learning is not slow at all. Samurai, I appreciate that your advice is not clouded by ego and therefor not limited in such false ways. I will be recommending you to musicians, guitarists and otherwise. Much love to all.
Thank you so much for posting these videos I know you probably get this a lot but you’ve inspired me so much to pick up my guitar that was just collecting dust and that opened up a vortex of music that I never would’ve gotten into without watching your video I thank you
Great tips! Singing is the most important I think, it really strengthens your connection to the instrument, makes you play what you hear in your head rather than playing what your muscles “memorized”
Dude. Your technical ability is way more impressive than just playing fast. Your guitar playing leaves me in so much more awe than just another guy sweep picking (which isn't to say they're bad).
I'm wanting to record my own music, and finding my own voice is my biggest hurtle right now. Your videos are always a great tool in helping me get better. Thank you.
I really appreciated your bit about limitations. I have been playing on and off for about 15 years and have never been able to get good rhythm or timing. I decided long ago I would never be able to play on stage. After a crisis in my personal life I decided to do it anyways and play alone at an open mic. Because playing with others is so difficult I still play alone, and have developed a particular style because of it. I have reached a point where I am becoming pretty decent at doing sets. Like you said, the limitation can lead to new things. Thank you for your quality content!
good advice. the best thing I ever heard on this was from steve vai "you only need to be as good as you need to be". i would always beat myself up about not being able to shred like dragonforce but the reality is i can't because i just don't care to sit down and spend the time to learn. sure maybe it'd take me longer but at the end of the day, you are you and thats all you got.
Dude that German was legit! Great Video, couldn't come at a better Point trying to get out of purely covering Songs i like and developing a style and way of self-expression.
Great advice, as always. I know there's a lot I would like to work on and develop. Sadly with work, family, and working on content in my spare time there isn't a lot of time left to work on these things. I do need to push myself more though, even if just getting in 15mins a day!
Interesting advice, as i find myself struggling with with certain techniques and find some pretty natural and intuitive. I think like you said in your video, that i should work on my weaknesses but be mindfull on the things that are within my grasp and use the tools that i can work well with, never ceasing to look for new ones to express myself however. Thank you
Yeah, I wish I had youtube as a kid. My 12th birthday, (1995), I got a black bullet strat, a crappy 15 watt solid state practice amp and a yngwie malmsteen tab book...
I think using tabs to learn songs for me has been one of my biggest setbacks. I've been playing off and on for almost 20 years and still wouldn't be comfortable playing with a band. I'm going to apply step 1 to the new Tool album when it comes out. Thanks!
Hi Sensei, Greetings from the northeast. Good Talk. This is a real good talk. Some folks will not do these things because they are hard. And they will not get better. You have to struggle and feel like you are failing in order to succeed. Every musician should sing. You may not be a great singer but you will be a better musician. Rock on. Bye for now. Respect Sensei
6:43 For me and drumming, I have the same limitation. It is convenient for me, though, that my taste in music does not include the fast stuff, like punk and some branches of metal, so I don't even feel limited by it.
00:34 small tip: German uses "sch" to give out the same sound English uses "sh" (shallow, shed, shit) and they use it a lot. Other than that, I learned that sentence in 2 years of german that was at school, and I haven't gotten any better lol.
The best thing I've done for my guitar playing lately is to take piano lessons. I think it's similar to what you were talking about with singing. It makes you think of things in a different way.
As a former pianist, who plans to pick up the guitar this year, piano lessons are definitely great even though it wasn't the instrument I wanted to learn (guess what I wanted to learn, wink). Even after I stopped playing six years ago, it gave me a really good ear for music. More musicians should take some piano lessons.
Cool that you're learning german. Have U already checked out some german musicans? I think it ever helps to listen to the music of a country to better understand their language and cultur. I would recommend you Tocotronic or Kraftklub.
I'm not ever going to to be crazy fast either I totally get it and I enjoy expressive solos over technical/fast solos anyway I'm not a metal head it's made it difficult start a band in my area because most kids my age are all playing metal around here... das ist Scheiße. Aber ich mag was ich mag.
What do you do to organize/catalogue recordings of improvisations? Especially if they get kind of long, it makes it harder to store and harder to listen to
Can’t stand looking for my picks, so I play with my fingers. Can’t stand changing my strings and break the high E all the time, so play 5 strings most of the times... Doesn’t make me better, but adds a bit of personality.
Are you planning to put your new language into use in germany within the near future? Because that would be a great thing, like, having a meet- up here
I've spent 12 years of my guitar playing actively avoiding playing the material of others, as a form a pure meditation. That simple decision gave me my voice, acknowledged by peers and friends alike, in what I play. It gave me a special bond with my Furch guitar as well, I know my axe now. Nobody can ever take that away from me.
Play different styles, find sections you like, focus on what your good at, create a style/ musical attitude based on your perception of sound. Don’t imitated, borrow and evolve. That’s how I feel…
hey sammy i’ve been wanting to practice guitar again even though i’ve been playing for 3 years but i just can’t get inspiration to practice every time i pick up my acoustic i feel like i just get bored. i always preferred playing an electric guitar because i like to play with effects but i can’t really do that with an acoustic. sadly i can’t afford a new electric (mine broke) is there a way i can sort of inspire myself to help me through this flunk, thank you :)
Great info! Thanks man! Totally appreciate the advice in finding my own version of Jimi- I mean me. 😅 Lol. Just kidding. I love Jimi but I don’t want to always have such distortion.
Learn by ear is a big oof for me. As much as I believe what you say, I consider myself of somewhat tone-deaf if thats a thing. But I do end up improvising something which is "hey this sounds like [x band's y song]" , however this is completely random. I also absolutely no idea how to figure out chords by ear.
