I’m so sorry you went through this. I’ve been a sub in the past and I’m starting my first year as a teacher in August. More good and bad stories, please!

Thanks for sharing. I will share a few more, stay tuned. Most students do not act like this 🙂 and while there’s a lot of negativity about dealing with parents, my experience has been mostly positive.

This resonates on so many levels. I’ve had several instances like this over my 12 year career. Kudos to how you handled things.

Thanks. I bet not much surprises you anymore! I’ve been teaching for nine.

I’ve had a very similar experience teaching 5th grade. He would go home and make up wild accusations and then I’d get a phone call from mom yelling at me and just going off on me. Weird accusations like, forcing him to sing the star spangled banner, picking on him, etc. She even came in to watch me teach once. Admin was appalled by her but they all plus former teachers warned me about this student but I was like, no. He will probably be my favorite student. Nope. Not the case. The first time and last time I ever cried as a teacher. And I did basically what you did after that. I only spoke to this student if it was absolutely necessary the rest of the year.

Yeah, I’ve had a small handful of similar experiences. This one was probably the worst because of the way it was done in front of my face and there was no “well maybe there was a misunderstanding.” I had to walk away; it was a losing battle at that time. Its worse now with their abilities to manipulate situations through their phones. I’ve seen a few staff members falsely accused due to 5-10 second edits of minute long videos. It is best to keep your distance, in my opinion.

I can’t imagine how you felt to have a parent there to watch you teach. Moments like that put us in a place of wanting to leave.

Teaching is a challenge, for sure; but I still find it rewarding. I always say, you have to truly love being around kids to teach.
