Hey Carl, I’m a 58 yo lady that thought I’m the only person out there that loves that tune. I’m picking up my guitar right now to learn that riff from you!! Thank G-d I have big paws!
LOVE early Ratt. They were my introduction to metal, and while I later discarded them for heavier bands like Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, the big 4 of Thrash, etc, I still go back to them every now and then. Incredible guitar duo.
Carl this is a thing of beauty, every day you're further clarifying for me that my small monthly contribution to your academy is a killer value... Humblestudent
Carl I really appreciate these awesome tutorials you do on TH-cam. I mean you have been ruling TH-cam on guitar instruction. I love the way you teach and slow things down where we can see what your doing . Keep up the great videos man. Appreciate it.
I just watched another vid and was like screw that I can't do that stretch and keep the index finger in place, but you telling me to get my thumb down and behind made all the difference. Oh, and how I love, "It's hard not to play that riff, it's just killer." Yes. Yes it is.
I've been watching you since 2014 and learned lots of songs, riffs and solos by watching your lessons, you are awesome and yet so simple keep it up greetings from Greece.
Love this tune! Not to take anything away from Warren because he’s a bad ass but thank you for Acknowledging Robbin Crosby as well. He always gets pushed aside and he was a big part of that Ratt sound and songwriting!!
Love your videos! You go beyond just teaching songs, you explain the mechanics behind them! I'm off work due to my back so I can't become a member but I will as soon as I am financially able!
I was hell beant on finally learning my favourite riff once and for all, not just mimicking it, hell why not the whole solo as well while were on it. I came to the right place. Thank you !
this song has 54+ million plays on Spotify. probably a billion total since it was released. I believe it is one of the top 3 guitar riffs of all time. the numbers don't lie. Regardless it's reached masterpiece level.
If you see any of these videos talking about ‘top 80’s riffs,’ that doesn’t include this, it’s not quite legit. If you were playing guitar in that time, this riff was being tried by almost EVERYBODY. Good breakdown of it here.
holy fudge you might have the best tone for this one yet? I thought Leon todd had some pretty good tone for this but yours man it has hair on the edges, jet black slicked back greasy HAIR... WOW
I've been struggling with the part at 27:14 for a while (bluesy fast part of solo). Warren just flies through it so fast I'm still too slow to do it at tempo. One thing I realized today was I was using my pinky where-as the Carl was not. So I tried using the exact fretting fingers as he did and my speed picked up (but had to re-train my muscle memory). Now I'm about 80% of the way there. I have to stay at it. Thanks for the lesson. PS: I've tried doing a hammer-on from no-where instead of picking one of the notes (2nd note after the B string 11th fret bend). That helps speed too. Then the G string 10th fret bend can be hammered from no-where too. I'm working on what sounds good and what's faster.
Brilliant tutorial Carl, most definitely one of (if not) the best youtube/online guitar teachers out there. Would be good if you can do some movie soundtrack tutorials! Cheers
Fantastic young man!! I just tackled Lips and Hips last night in drop D SO tonight I am gonna do this... Just subbed... Thanks for the great tutorial!!!
i was literally just thinking about learning this song.........you are a prophet Carl....Thank for all your efforts..you are a modern guitar hero for many. if you are looking for more Ratt songs to cover i would suggest What you give is what you get or You re in Trouble.......Ratt first 2 Albums are gems for any admirer of 80s guitar.
Great job. Was just playing this last night. Took me years of dissecting this song to get it right. Have watched every video with most playing it wrong but still picked up some pieces here and there. This vid is the "one stop shop" for this song... Where were you 30 years ago? Haha
You keep mentioning the main riff. My band currently plays this song and, oh boy, this is one of my absolute favorites of our nearly 40 song set! In my opinion, that opening/main riff is one of the best of all-time. I said what I said. >.
That's one of this Songs i allways wanted to learn. Even therefore i'm not really a hair metal Fan. This Riff is a killa and a must learn for droped D Fans. At least for me. A big Thank You very much for this easy to follow lession. 🙏
Just want to thank you for teaching me about 90% of everything I've learned on guitar these past 6 years. Great Lessons! It may not be your preferred area of music to listen to but would it be possible to venture into some more metalcore lessons, such as Of mice and men, all that remains, trivium, killswitch etc.? Keep up the great work, your killing it!
I developed De Quervain's learning and playing this one.. sucks I was out for over 12 months, and playing it today make my wrist sore as hale . . . but stupid me instead of healing or taping up I'd try to play before I was healed, STRETCH WELL BEFORE ATTMEPTING THIS AND BE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD STRENGTH!!!! if you don't have long long fingers you can hurt yourself, specially older gents, you can get sports tape and watch a De Quervain's video on how to tape up for the injury... helps to wear the tape even if you feel fine to prevent over fatiguing of the tendons ..
Love this song ! Its always been one of my favorites since it came out in the 80s. Not only do you give an amazing tutorial on how to play it..but you also nailed the tone .Awesome job as usual!! Thanks!!
"Hey There, Mr. Carl Brown, Wazz-Up!!! It's Me, Joe (JO-JO) Martinez From Houston, Texas (H-TOWN), And I Have Always Admired, Ratt's Music, Through The 80's, And Since!!! Yes please... 80s hair metal month would be soo soo great
I mean first poison now ratt, please keep going like this
Wouldn't be mad if he did some more queensrythe or do a Dokken song (Mr. Scary as a suggestion).
Definitely digging the Big Hair vibe lately. More Big Hair Carl!
I would not be mad at Dream Warriors or Into the Fire by Dokken one little bit... 😀
@@MJGoonie into the Fire ❤️
one of the greatest opening riffs in rock/metal history!
🤘🏻
\m/
IF, it came before VH unchained
It totally is! RATT and Warren DE Martini are under - rated !
Ya know, I don’t disagree. Lotta great intros but I never get tired of this one. It’s almost “pretty”, if that makes sense.
Man, Carl has been killing it with these lessons lately. You're the greatest on YT
Ikr
I agree....REALLY REALLY good songs
without a doubt

Hey Carl, I’m a 58 yo lady that thought I’m the only person out there that loves that tune. I’m picking up my guitar right now to learn that riff from you!! Thank G-d I have big paws!
One of Ratt's definitive songs for sure! I know I will enjoy this one!
Since we're doing Ratt, how about Way Cool Jr? A great bluesy riff.
Getting through this riff the first time (roughly) put the biggest smile on my face. 🤘
Ratt. All time favorite 80's Metal Band.
Finally, owe you my life for this tutorial! Do Quiet Riot - Bang Your Head as the next 80s super hit🤘🏼
One word: WARREN!!!!!!!!!!!!
More like Robbin Crosby
LOVE early Ratt. They were my introduction to metal, and while I later discarded them for heavier bands like Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, the big 4 of Thrash, etc, I still go back to them every now and then. Incredible guitar duo.
Man…your tone is soooo good. You explained this song better than anything I’ve seen.
Carl this is a thing of beauty, every day you're further clarifying for me that my small monthly contribution to your academy is a killer value... Humblestudent
Yes! Love RATT. Would love to see you do more of them and maybe some Dokken too. Keep up the great work Carl!
Dokken would be sick. Extreme too
Omg Dokken
Definitely Dokken!!! Our humble request sent your way for review Carl 🤠
Dokken would be amazing!!!
another vote here for Dokken!
this is the riff that made me fall in love with R a t t.
Carl I really appreciate these awesome tutorials you do on TH-cam. I mean you have been ruling TH-cam on guitar instruction. I love the way you teach and slow things down where we can see what your doing . Keep up the great videos man. Appreciate it.
Yess, more of the 80s. I think guitar tone and playing in general peaked in the 80d and we've been trying to catch up ever since.
Ratt are such a good band
I just watched another vid and was like screw that I can't do that stretch and keep the index finger in place, but you telling me to get my thumb down and behind made all the difference.
Oh, and how I love, "It's hard not to play that riff, it's just killer."
Yes. Yes it is.
Finally dude this is one of the best riffs of rock in general
I've been watching you since 2014 and learned lots of songs, riffs and solos by watching your lessons, you are awesome and yet so simple keep it up greetings from Greece.
“It can’t actually be a 2 fret pinky stretch!” *checks TH-cam*
“Oh shit it’s a friggin 2 fret pinky stretch”
One of the best intros.
I was searching for lessons on this song literally last night. Amazing coincidence and killer lesson as usual. This channel is gold.
A quality track - brings me back to my teenage years in the 80's - Warren Demartini
I’m teaching nearly my student the same way you teaching everyone! Awesome you bro! Easy to follow and understand.
Great lesson Carl, I so glad to see another Ratt lesson.
I was hell beant on finally learning my favourite riff once and for all, not just mimicking it, hell why not the whole solo as well while were on it. I came to the right place. Thank you !

Ive always loved the riff to this song. The whole song is just great. One of my favorite rock songs ever
If you see any of these videos talking about ‘top 80’s riffs,’ that doesn’t include this, it’s not quite legit. If you were playing guitar in that time, this riff was being tried by almost EVERYBODY. Good breakdown of it here.
Warren has some great melodic riffs, this being one of the best.
Glad i found the channel you really are an amazing teacher thank you much
holy fudge you might have the best tone for this one yet? I thought Leon todd had some pretty good tone for this but yours man it has hair on the edges, jet black slicked back greasy HAIR... WOW
By far the best tutorials on TH-cam! You should do some Winger songs, I can never seem to find any tutorials of their songs.

Way Cool Jr. is due a lesson as well Carl !
Brilliant tutorial Carl, most definitely one of (if not) the best youtube/online guitar teachers out there. Would be good if you can do some movie soundtrack tutorials! Cheers
