This interview and the one he did on Pensado's place are the most enlightening ideas I've ever heard. He knows how to make a compressor dance instead of just being a level control. I could listen to him talk about this stuff for hours on end. CLA is great too. But, the way JJP talks about all the thought processes and things beyond the technicality of mixing, ensnares me every time. Mixing is a philosophy not just a mechanical process. Great stuff.

I just acquired the JJP Collection from Waves, and just to put it to the test, I went back in to some of my old mixes and applied your plugin's. Oh my goodness, I wish I could reprint all of that stuff with your plugin's applied!!! Your videos teach me more than any other series I have watched! This guy's philosophy on compression is dead-on. The #1 album in my iTunes Library as far as number of listens is Spilt Milk by Jellyfish. I'm not even that big a fan of the band, but the mix is incredible--every time I play through a song yet another subtle element steps forward that I'd not heard in prior listens. JJP delivered the fat vintage mojo that 70's retro power-pop band needed to get across--without getting too muddy and losing those incredible details. The credibility this man has as an engineer and teacher is off-the-charts, IMHO.

Think of compressors as outboard gear. Not as a plugin. Think of the EQ as the preamp. You would run the compressor into the preamp first.Then use the preamp to adjust it a little bit and run into the console/DAW.
