  • This video was digitized from VHS and processed at 60fps | 4K. It was edited a bit from the original.
These 16mm home movies were taken by director David Butler on the sets of "Bright Eyes" and "The Little Colonel". A 1935 column reported that Butler's intent was to present them to Shirley so she could watch them when she got a bit older. Butler's assistant director, Ad Schaumer, helped Butler with this task as well. He must have been filming at the beginning with Butler manning his own camera in the background, while Shirley turns to give Schaumer a good glare. Schaumer can also be seen twice starting at 0:50, sneaking up behind Shirley to film her.
Cast and crew were caught by Butler's camera between scenes, including Shirley, Jane Withers and Lionel Barrymore. Hattie McDaniel (Mom Beck), Nyanza Potts (Henry Clay), Avonne Jackson (May Lily) and Fritz the dog all mugged and danced for the camera on the "Little Colonel" set (yup, that's a cigarette in Nyanza's hand, though I don't know if he smoked at that young age, or if someone thought it would be "cute" for him to carry it around). Even shy Mrs. Temple joined in the fun, though she's seen hiding behind a binder at 5:38.
At 0:17 you'll see Shirley's stand-in, Marilyn Granas, in the background behind Shirley, along with another little girl who must have been Jane Withers's stand-in. Jane is wearing a retainer at 1:07 (like a lot of kids her age). One of the former All-American football players who appeared in the "Good Ship Lollipop" scene strikes a pose at 1:12. Shirley Temple Black often remarked that she had problems looking into the sun, and this can be seen at 1:29. Charles Sellon (Uncle Ned) reviews the "Bright Eyes" script on the far left side of the screen at 2:34. His wheelchair stands by while the crew sets up for the garden scene. Barrymore and Butler trade places at 4:42. At 5:11, Shirley and her mother wait in a car at Fox Studio's Tennessee Gate. Finally, mud-slinging Shirley relaxes in a chair marked "Camera" at 5:58.
David Butler directed Shirley in "Bright Eyes", "The Little Colonel", "The Littlest Rebel", "Captain January" and later, "The Story of Seabiscuit". He was slated to direct "Curly Top" as well, but was replaced by Irving Cummings.
The copy of the home movie videotape was obtained through the generosity of the Butler family many years ago.
