  • In this video we are creating characters for a story. These 7th grade students are beginners and have only had two months of Spanish. I give input by asking questions, reviewing the story, and taking ideas from students. In addition, I make language comprehensible by writing words on the board with English translations and by asking permission to speak English. Students know when to answer as a class, raise their hand, and when to do movements for the structures used in the story. The movements are also mini brain breaks embedded throughout the lesson. The props, students actors, pictures of actors from the previous day, and ideas from the class make this story creation process compelling for students.

I LOVE how IN LOVE with participating your students are. They are all 100% engaged, responding, comprehending, and excited. Your style and SLA strategies are magical. Congrats on being a hero to us all!!!

Came across this video in a link to your blog on Facebook--this is fantastic! I'm so excited to start TPRS this fall with my middle schoolers and the way your students are loving the process and the amount of input they are engaged in is 100 % my goal for what I hope to someday be able to do! Thank you for sharing your skills and being such an inspiration!

I love how you are keeping the conversation/ lesson going. How long is each class? How many classes do you teach in a day? I teach HS and would love to start doing this for my students but I am exhausted by the end of the day. I have classes of around 30 students. Some of my students are required to take Spanish to graduate but do not want to be there. How do I start w the cards? Which sources do you recommend to prepare my self to teach the way you do it. It is my second year but I would love to help my students acquire the language faster. TIA.

At 5:08 you say "Show us the card again," I am guessing that you have directions or rules on a card teaching the students how to participate in the story. Is that right? You are clearly teaching (& always reteaching) the class the RULES for the story such as accepting a detail as factual once it has been established. Is this what is on the card? Only one rule on a card, or a few? >>>curiosa

I don't have rules on cards, but that sounds like a great idea! At 5:08 I was referring to the POR QUE card. I was asking, "Por que el gato es malo?" Some of the students who sit in front have the question words on pink cards. (Other students have rejoinders on blue cards) Whenever I ask a question, the student who has the card with that particular question word has to lift it up. Thank you for noticing that the students are following the lesson expectations well. I work really hard on that every day. Every day I have to train them. Every day I take a few minutes in English to remind/reinforce how they should answer, behave, etc....This helps me maximize acquisition and helps me stay (and the students) in the target language over 90% of the time. Thank you for such a wonderful and encouraging comment!
