I really appreciate the nice explanation of TAS during that portion of the video. So many people misrepresent them (often by accident) and contribute to the notion that it's just a cheated version of a speedrun. You even included the community-driven nature of TAS projects (and speedrunning in general), really great to see!
But as I understand it, tas isn't a bot right? it's a tool that allows you to move frame by frame and control inputs perfectly with various save states..?
@@HumanGuyManDude Saying it was a bot in and of itself was slightly inaccurate, but the full description he gave paints a fairly accurate picture. A TAS is a specific kind of gameplay recording whose properties allow us to demonstrate potential gameplay rather than provide a record of a specific person's actual gameplay
It's a gameplay recording that is replayed against the game itself, rather than a video player. This means anyone can verify that what's seen in a TAS can be done in the real game by simply downloading the "video" and watching it themselves. This almost always takes the form of an input file (a file which is literally a sequence of the inputs for every frame of gameplay from start to finish) that can then be read in real time by either the game itself (for certain PC games), an emulator (for most console games), or a special wrapping program that sort of simulates playing a PC game as if it were through an emulator (I don't have much experience with this example, might be describing it poorly). When people say a bot is playing the TAS, this is the part they're usually getting at, and it's not entirely wrong to call some of these utilities a form of software bot. In fact, for older console games, you can actually find videos of hardware bots that play back a TAS through original hardware by translating the input file into actual controller signals into the console. This isn't to say your description is wrong either, as you've highlighted two of the most commonly used "tools" that allow Tool-Assisted gameplay videos (staying more generic than speedrunning for this discussion) to more finely control the game in order to achieve whatever the authors are aiming for (doesn't necessarily have to be a speedrun).
Nagzz's further remarks about a TAS being formulated and the community adding to it over time are the reasons I appreciate his description so much. TASes are made with a goal in mind in order to demonstrate something specific via reproduceable gameplay, and allows for that demonstration to be improved over multiple iterations as the author (or community as a whole) learns how better to achieve the goal. This is what makes TASes such a powerful and healthy resource in the speedrunning community, or even the general gaming community, as players try to understand the games they play at a deeper level.

My dad took apart an ancient crt (probably wasn't even called a crt but I'm not bothering to google what it's called), fitted giant pads on either side of it so it would rest on his shoulders and wore it on his head so his face was looking out of the screen (glass removed obv)
Camera was an ancient monster of a beast that he also gutted so that my mom was looking out through the lens (again, glass removed)
