@supermariosunshine64 How many times must I repeat this? As I said in previous months-old comments here, I did not include the GB "version" because it's in fact a completely new and unique game of its own after the initial four levels.
@johneymute As I said in the video's description and previous comments: the Game Boy game is a completely new adventure after the four arcade levels prologue, the Game & Watch game is too divergent to be condisered a straight-up port, and the GBA version is just the NES version on a squashied screen frame.
There was also a Game and Watch version and a mini arcade version. Those tabletop mini arcade games were so popular back in the 80s. And don't forget the various clones such as "Crazy Kong" and even "King Kong" himself for the Atari 2600.
Holy fuck, did the people who made the soundtrack for the 7800 version even listen to it themselves? I'd rather there be no sound than whatever they made here. That noise sounds like something you could use to torture someone with.
That's no excuse. They should've used fewer sounds or different sound effects rather than putting something in there that tries to imitate the original but instead sounds like an audio nightmare. For example, eliminate Mario's walking/climbing noise completely (never was a huge fan of it in the original either, to be honest, but here it's so much worse).
@KMerrow Clearly, that incarnation's "best" sprite is when you beat the stage, where he gives the impression of having eaten Pauline in the blink of an eye.
Guys, just give Spectrum a pass. It is not the worst. It has all the screens, all gameplay elements, its not sluggish and has good sound in updated +2 version. I'd say that DOS, Apple II, Atari 2600 and Intellivision ports are objectively worse.
The Texas Instruments TI-99 reinforced by Bill Cosby. So I'm imagining Bill Cosby is donkey Kong and he's throwing pudding pops at Mario. Poor Rosealine! don't drink what Cosby gives you!
Of course it looks, plays, and sounds the best on the NES. The Atari 7800 tried to get the sound, but it was the most intolerable for me to listen to out of all twelve.

In spite of the better graphics hardware compared to the 5200 and Atari 8 bit computers the 7800 had the same sound hardware as the 2600 and the pokey chip was optional in the cartridge. I guess this was to lower the cost of the console a bit but only lowered the price probably by $10-$20 (about the price difference between a Pokey and non Pokey game cartridge) and really didn't make much sense.
Commodore VIC 20: Donkey kong has freaking blue teeth! TI-99: The hammer music is AWESOME! Atari 8-bit computers: Mario sound like he's singing some opera when he jumps and Donkey Kong looks depressed Amstard CPC: OW THIS IS EARRAPE!! Well, it looks like those who had made the sound design in some versions had definitely no musical skills at all... It doesn't appear in the video, but the original arcade is definitely the best. But if you want me to choose one of the 12 showed, the NES version is still the best overall, but it's shameful that there's one stage missing, and don't see the cutscenes when Donkey Kong grabs the princess and climbs the ladders, the in-between stages screen with the piled Donkey Kong's saying "How high can you get?".... The difficulty... The sound effects... The arcade versions were always better than the console versions; I've never understood why the companies badly lacked of generosity when transporting an arcade version into a console. The ZX Spectrum is clearly unwatchable. Horrible.
Didn't Nintendo release a remastered version of the NES port for people who bought a red Wii in Europe or something? It had all the stuff that was missing from the Arcade version.
It’s because arcade cabinets were more powerful than all home consoles of that time. Also some consoles, like the Atari 2600, didn’t have the graphical power. But the most ones that did sincerely tried to at least make it visually appealing. Others had bad color palettes available. Some had horrible sound systems. The pcs ran on very different hardware. All had an excuse for being worse. Though some do not have an excuse.
Ha, another one of the rare cases of CPC beats C64. Amstrad CPC version is more colorful and has less anoying sound effects, strange how both versions were made by ocean (atarisoft's c64 port is even more inferior). They are even speed wise identical. The titlescreen of the CPC is just beautiful, and it's the only port which has Donkey Kong's grinning animation after smashing the beams. Not even the Nintendo's own NES version has that! That one doesn't even include Kong's climbing.
Take a drink every time the port goes straight to the original version's fourth level.
AFAIK, he level sequence was revised to 1,4,1,3,4,1,2,3,4,1,2,1,3,4... or something like that for the American release, so one will see the conveyor level only after beating the final level twice. I have played Crazy Kong as a kid here in Germany, and the level sequence was 1,2,3,4 - I suppose the Donkey Kong level sequence was the same here.
