I know! It sounds nuts. And it gets crazier than that. Go to my channel, 'I Saw the Light and watch the Heavenly Number 7. Most of those images come from waves. Your life has been saved by Jesus more than once, especially at the Wedge.
I've gotten worked by 5 foot waves and lost all sense of direction. When i finally got to shore i contemplated going back out. (Only a few months surfing at the time) I truly learned to respect the power of the ocean. Couldn't imagine whipping out on waves this size.
+Beastly Man whole new level. if you've ever been pounded by decently sized shorebreak it's a good way to divide the gnarliness of a big wave. haha like i'm pretty sure we'd actually just die in those situations.
Beastly Man brought back memories of going out on my foamie in hurricane surf. Talk about learning the hard way... I felt like a worm on a bobber getting dragged behind a boat... haha
8 foot waves are about where big wave surfing starts. Anything overhead is considered "big wave surfing". I know the experience going out and not being physically prepared for it or experienced enough. Really many intermediate/beginnner surfers don't know how to conserve energy while in the water and tire themselves out. I think proper paddling form and knowing how to command yourself in the water is vital, you can't go out into 8 foot surf and expect to be okay without some sense of it.
Honestly I've watched this clip around 5 or 6 times and I never get tired of it, it's one of the funniest surf videos ever, the humour just cracks me up so much.. the child flash trip he mentions is what's called having a neart death experience, I had exactly the same thing happen to me when I was hit by car and ended up underneath it, it all happened so quick but the footage I could see in front of my eyes was of everything going back right to when I was a baby and young child, it was the most intense thing to realise and seemed quite long but in reality was only a second at the most as I got smashed and buried underneath the back of a Holden.
...and here I am getting caught in a 6 foot break and completely losing all sense of orientation. You wouldn't think those size waves would toss you so violently but they really do! So much respect for the ocean and the people who surf these monsters
Bruce Irons: only guy in History to ever wipeout on one of the gnarliest monster waves ever at Teahupoo, then miraculously gets off unscathed and is then gracefully jet-ski paraded on the lineup butt-naked, thus earning his spot in Surf history forever by mixing extreme life-threatening drama & comedy on the same wave - all the while narrating it with a charming and unpretentious, "no-biggie"-style. Now, that's the epitome of "Cool". Feel free to top it...
Oh fuk i've been there. Lost my shorts on a wave at my local break, had to borrow my mates lucky he was wearing boxers... Glad to see it happens to the best of us.
When there is a party going on and the stories start getting told and someones response to said story is "classic": This is the correct use of "classic". No matter how matter how much time elapses between the telling the story stays timeless. Here that Mr. Bruce Irons Sir. You are Timeless... AI and BI the Irons Clan's latest addition to the Classics!
You have keen perception. Yes, most waves have the capacity to kill. But there is somebody in the water whom most of all you surfers owe your life too....Yes, Jesus Christ Loves Surfing and He is constantly saving Surfers's Lives whom otherwise would have perished in the massive waves. I'm not a super religious person, it's just what I see within the elements. PEACE!
@Ian Dog Learn what I Know by watching the music video 'unf### the World by The Prophets of Rage. There, you will find the truth that jesus, the pope and mother Mary are The Liars. And The Spirit of Earth is GOD of Creation. Mark is still alive on the other side. I AM The Anti-Christ and damd proud of it.
@Ian Dog I know, sounds absolutely crazy. Just for a moment, entertain this thought. Look at the wave thumbnail picture. Now watch as the wave swells and retracts. If you see it and wonder what the hell? Let Me know and I'll elaborate. If not, consider it lucidity.
@Ian Dog I'M Okay, thank you for asking. I know what you mean. The words I speak sound as if I'm crazy, yet I AM Not. A Spirit revealed their self from within Myself. Still Myself, but with a new visitor who can read my mind from within thoughts. My thoughts no longer my own, but community property with The Spirit of Earth, Sun, Stars, Moon and everything that exist. In time, I realized that it's GOD of Creation. Here's what I now know. That GOD is the Living Soul of A Woman who had become everything that exist. And has arisen through Me to bear the Light of Knowledge. I still AM bewildered at the things that I say of which I never had spoken before. I Stand Alone against everything that the "Cross" represents. I'll get back.
I'm really glad he said he was scared because damn those waves are monstrous and scary! I can't even imagine a wipe out on a wave that size. I've been wiped out bad many times by big (big for the east coast of the USA) waves where my head collides with the ocean floor and I have to do the bubbles trick to know which way is up. Can't imagine a wave like that. OMG!
Well, 1. Eyes or death 2. Maybe it depends on some kind of sediment, or salt content in your area. Clarity is hard when its all churned up Sh*t ive never tried it. I swam up before, and thought someone was surfing above me , swam at them, and hit the bottom. I did open my eyes last night surfing/duckdiving, and i saw where the surfer was next to me, to avoid him. So i know it works. It burns a bit in the pool too. But, when you gotta you gotta!
How the hell do these guys LIVE to tell about wipeouts on waves like this? I surfed 8’ waves in Florida, wiped out and THAT rocked my world! I cannot even fathom wiping out on one of these! Put it this way, if I chose to ride one, I’d write my will beforehand!
Half way through the vid, I noticed irons was a bit irritated from his voice; I thought it was due to his board. LOL the being butt naked, now I know why!
I would have commended him for his courage but for his exhibitionism. The guy narrowly escaped death and should be grateful that he was not made into minced meat. I agree with his comment though, when going out in big surf, you never look at the waves cause it will psycho you out.
That wave didn't have a lip - it had the whole fuckin' ocean behind it.
The thickness of that lip is bigger than waves I'm scared to drop in on. Cheer hoo!
MAnzk nanc same dude I’m from Australia and don’t like it when it’s bigger than 5 foot
Mitchell Luxton my max is 7inches.
@@Alvaro-em1dj 17cm for me.
*thiccc*
When the only way to describe a physical feeling is by a sound. "I got really rag dolled, Swoooooh!"
get pitted! ;)
Bruce knows how to tell a story - legend.
Wasn't expecting that, funny as hell

Exato kkkkkkkk
So damn funny... your buddy Koby. Great counter balance to the death defying ride. Humbly related. Thanks Bruce.
Bruce I'm so proud of you for making it thru your Brothers journey. Keep charging
What an insane wave
Respect

Could not have asked for a better wipeout. Brilliant memory. CapeTown
how do people SURVIVE THIS
They don't
@John Frankland what u mean its water¿? do u know that underwater is not possible to breath? plus the shallow reef.....
Greatest wipeout ever. With the story and end sequence to go with it 👍😂
I was there that afternoon. I tell we had a good laugh that evening after a nice glass of bitter cold beer 🍺 and a nice glass of scotch on ice
Brings new meaning to the term "balls out".

Big stupid grin on my face from that story. Thank you surfline. I can relate Bruce.

Best vid I've seen all year hahaha 🧡
It's literally like 5ft deep in that impact zone, unbelievable more people don't die on this wave!

Let some air out, and see which way it goes! Thats up yo
casey bakker how do u see where it goes if your eyes are closed? When I open my eyes in the ocean it hurts.
Well,
1. Eyes or death
2. Maybe it depends on some kind of sediment, or salt content in your area.
Clarity is hard when its all churned up
Sh*t ive never tried it. I swam up before, and thought someone was surfing above me , swam at them, and hit the bottom.

So i know it works. It burns a bit in the pool too. But, when you gotta you gotta!

I always get a laugh out of this vid.
That was the best ever! I think Andy reached down and snagged his brothers pants just for fun!!! Bruce is da man
Hell of a friggin wipeout...

Anytime you lose your shorts (or fins) in a wipeout, you KNOW it was bad...

Classic guy, great description. Is it really that big? yeah yeah, for sure...
Hahaha! The naked part is hilarious!
I would have commended him for his courage but for his exhibitionism. The guy narrowly escaped death and should be grateful that he was not made into minced meat. I agree with his comment though, when going out in big surf, you never look at the waves cause it will psycho you out.

if Billabong wanted to give XXL Monster Wave award to a wipeout they probably should have chosen this wave over Nathan Feltchers one.
He thought it wasn't that big
